Dragonsmaster 0 Posted June 16, 2009 Remember when Fantasy Football was young...... Each team had one starting RB, RBBC hadn't been born yet Each Team had two starting WRs, not 4 guys alternating in at a whim There were true sleepers, guys who came from nowhere as backups to start and pull your team to victory(Warner) You could get your stud RBs handcuff in the 13th round, not the 7th Standard leagues basically rewarded a TD or over 100yd rushing, and 1yd TD guys like Marcus Allen were studs.. ...and you had to actually dig for info, to get an edge....oh those were the days... Now I think we have completely over engineered Fantasy Football.... but I still love it....and I wouldn't go back... I'm ready for football season to start now.... Raider 84 29 Posted June 16, 2009 I remember adding up my opponents score and my own score from the stats in the newspaper as I was walking to school, in the snow, uphill, both ways. Greedo 13 Posted June 16, 2009 How about trying to figure out free agents when all the info wasn't compiled for you on a week by week basis? Ah - which WR to pick up in week 8 - back when doing research gave you an edge.
kutulu 1,719 Posted June 16, 2009 thank god those days are gone. Don't get me wrong, I like the easy there is running leagues, drafting, scoring etc that the internet brings, but I really think I had an added advantage in the olden days of getting all the stats from USA Today, ESPN (no NFLN) etc. I would study that stuff like no one else in my league. I know the competition has gotten closer as all this info is readily available to anyone with a PC.

Vikings4ever 569 Posted June 16, 2009 There were true sleepers, guys who came from nowhere as backups to start and pull your team to victory(Warner) Steve Slaton, Chris Johnson, Le'Ron McClain, Eddie Royal, Antonio Bryant, and Lance Moore. Just to name a few players who came out of nowhere to become starters for good FF teams.

jocstrap 8 Posted June 16, 2009 I remember my first year 1998. Everybody's first year in a 10 team league. 9 qb's went first so at the turn I took Barry Sanders and Terrell Davis. On Thursday's, I couldn't wait for the fax = score update. Magazines were the highlights of June and July.
fantasymind 1 Posted June 16, 2009 Real old school here...I bought a BOOK by Cliff Charpentier called Fantasy Football Digest when I first started playing because there were no (or very few available where I lived?) magazines dedicated to FF in 1992...I had to decide between Mark Rypien and Dan Marino with my second pick at the turn...went with the hall of famer and never looked back. edjr 6,992 Posted June 17, 2009 my 1st league was 1991. No one had ever done it before so we didn't even know how to go about selecting the draft order. we used a deck of cards, ace thru queen. We reselected for every position. the same guy had 1st pick for QB and WR, yeah he took Young and Rice He didn't win it all though.

Melissa Stark 1 Posted June 18, 2009 Remember when Fantasy Football was young...... My Commish calculated everything by hand, based off our local newspaper. Then sent out weekly newsletters to each owner. I do miss that excitement for every Wednesday's mail. ( Our letter also consited off weekly highs and yearly stats.) His voice mail jammed with lineups, transactions, his wife hating Sunday mornings, no phone call rule we had(after 9pm) League fees included postage, paper and envelopes.hehe I remember this. And the commish was on the phone with everyone on Monday and Tuesday, because everyone did their own scores better than he did, and they wanted to know where the playoff seedings were set that week, etc. Good times. remote controller 143 Posted June 21, 2009 We put in for waivers on paper in sealed envelopes. We had to have them to the Commish by 5:00 PM Thurs. We would meet at his office, drink beer, and award them worst to first! The main thing missing from FF now is the lack of actually getting together to drink beer weekly. I also miss the beer wenches at the draft parties who posted the picks on the board.

IAMWood 6 Posted June 21, 2009 When you could not wait for the first ff mag came out. Only to laugh at it by the time draft comes around cause half of it is ######. And hence the advent of bringing them to the draft so somone can ask,"Hey, can I borrow that? " and you 'begrudgingly' give it over, saying "You owe me if you finish in the money", just case the blind squirrel finds a nut. Then they pick someone in the 3rd round who is out for the season. Good times, good times. Always loved making them feel like they owe you for that.
IAMWood 6 Posted June 21, 2009 Still love how I came up with the tier system and not drafting a QB first since they scored the most points on my own. Got Emmitt Smith in the 1st and Jerry Rice in the 2nd when they went 1-2 in TDs scored one year.10 QBs were gone by the 2nd round. Took the internet for most fools to figure that one out. I still love fantasy football, but it is harder to win these days with all the info available and all the strategy out in the open. I was on these boards teaching fools since it was around. You are welcome, send $$$.

Good times, good times. Always loved making them feel like they owe you for that. Before the magazines, there was Chris Charpentier's FF book, which always had a few guys who weren't even playing that season. My league dates back to 1993, starting with 6 teams. The team rosters were ridiculous. The first year I had Sanders, Thurman, Rice, Moore and Marino. League still is going today.
jjallans 0 Posted June 21, 2009 I had a flashback to this a couple years ago when I did my first fantasy college football league. I had to start calculating all the stats myself and track all the trades, etc. After week one I told everyone they must calculate the scores to their own games and email it to me and I only checked the games where there was a discrepancy between the 2 owners' scores. Yes, the internet has spoiled me. I'm glad CBS has started tracking college players now.
