Parents upset over 'leftist propaganda' video

Education » Principal apologizes for showing 'I Pledge' to students.

Obama speech to students: Not all parents want their kids to see it. A school principal has apologized for showing a video at an assembly that a politically conservative group leader is calling "radical, leftist propaganda."

Children at Eagle Bay Elementary School in Farmington were shown a short video called "I pledge" on Aug. 28. The video opens with an image of President Barack Obama and part of a speech in which he says, "Let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, of responsibility where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves but each other." The video then features celebrities making pledges about how they will help the president and the world -- and that's where some say the problem lies.

Many pledges, such as supporting local food banks, smiling more, and caring for the elderly are noncontroversial. But other pledges, such as "to never give anyone the finger when I'm driving again," "to sell my obnoxious car and buy a hybrid" and to advance stem cell research cross the line, some say.

"Showing the video in a public school is completely inappropriate," said Jennifer Cieslewicz, whose daughter is a first-grader at the school. "I don't believe a video such as this that promotes certain values should be shown to elementary students, especially without parents being aware. "

Chris Williams, Davis School District spokesman, said school principal Ofelia Wade and school PTA leaders decided to show the video as part of an assembly about the school's theme for the year, service. He said the PTA board chose the video and Wade did not see it before it was shown in the assembly.

"It got to a point where she turned to her assistant and said, 'Oops, I wish I would have seen this before. I don't think I would have shown it,' " Williams said. He said Wade could see how some adults might find the video political.

"She acknowledges she was wrong and apologizes for it and says she's sorry," Williams said. Attempts to reach school PTA leaders Tuesday

Williams said Wade plans to send a letter home to parents Wednesday about the issue.

Gayle Ruzicka, president of conservative Utah Eagle Forum, said the video was blatantly political. She said other offensive pledges included, "I pledge to be of service to Barack Obama," "I pledge allegiance to the funk, to the united funk of funkadelica," and pledges to not use plastic grocery bags and not flush the toilet after urinating.

"It's very inappropriate to show a radical, leftist propaganda piece that political to children," Ruzicka said. "If parents want their children to learn about those things and do them in the home, wonderful, fine, but it's not the place of the school to show a one-sided propaganda piece to children without parents knowing about it."

Cieslewicz said such values should be decided in the home, not at school.

"They shouldn't be troubling our youth with the woes of the world and making them feel like we're in slavery or they have to worry about how many times they flush the toilet or if they have a plastic water bottle," Cieslewicz said, referring to pledges in the video to "end slavery."

Ruzicka said she contacted local media about the video after receiving complaints from several parents. Ruzicka said she worried the video's messages would confuse children whose parents might choose to use plastic bags when shopping or who want their children to flush the toilet after every use. Also she said she didn't like a pledge "to be of service to Barack Obama" as he is here to serve Americans, not the other way around.

Ruzicka said she'd like to see the school district send a link to the video to all parents before an upcoming back-to-school night so they can voice their opinions and discuss it with their children. Williams said it's unlikely the district will send out a link, but parents are welcome to access the video on YouTube.

school principal Ofelia
I'm shocked she wanted to show a video praising the king. :overhead:

Also, I like plastic bags. We collect them in a plastic bag collection thingy and use them for small garbage, lunch bags if the kids leave them at school, wet bathing suits, etc. Quite useful. :headbanger:

Don't most of those kids share their dad with like 7 other moms?

No. Now stay on point. Or are you ok with school kids being forced to hear this garbage?

They're being forced? I thought they turned the damn thing off before it finished. Maybe the school should have previewed it before playing it for their students. Would you not agree? In which case, we have more to worry about than a 4 minute video....but that's a whole different subject.

Honestly, the vid has the same ring to it as a lot of the PSAs I was exposed to growing up: 'The More You Know'...bullsh!t like that.

I can see where parents don't agree with the message, or the particulars of the vid. I can't fault them. To each their own. But I guess that's the role of the parent, to sit down with their kid and explain to them why they believe the way they do, and why they think Anthony Kedis is a freak. I mean, no matter how hard you try, you cannot shield your kid from different ideas/ideologies. Parents are still the primary architects of their children's belief systems.

I think the video is dumb. I don't see the purpose. But the school should have watched it first before showing it to impressionable.....mostly blonde....students.

I just don't see it as an indoctrination programme.

I don't think Obama has much to worry about in the next Prez election. All of you hard right wingers are going to be in straight jackets in padded rooms. I couldn't imagine myself going to the time and trouble to search out all this crap to get outraged over. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy checking in once in awhile to see what Obama has you guys all red azzed over. :shocking:

Anthony Kedis, kissing his biceps as he says I pledge to serve Barack Obama is not indoctrination.

Hey, I think the whole thing is goofy. Stars are dumb. And I absolutely agree with the quote in the article about the Prez serving us, not the other way around...but I still don't see this as indoctrination.

Watch Jesus Camp if you wanna see the indoctrination of America's youth. ;)

Throughout the camp there are various activities that revolve around conservative political values ranging from the support of George Bush to anti-abortion sentiments. These activities include more than just adult members expressing their opinions to the children in the camp; these kids also take an active part in them and fervently uphold these conservative political ideals. While the main focus of this movie is religion, the political undertones can help viewers to understand the context of the camp as a mobilization unit in terms of how they can or want to change society.

Fair enough. But if that's your metric, then the stupid Obama vid isn't indoctrination either.

So elementary school kids are going to realize that "stars are dumb?" I don't think so. Kids are required to go to school; they just can't leave if and when an Obama video is shown. So when they are forced to listen to someone state, "I pledge to serve Barack Obama" yes that is indoctrination.

So the teachers forced them to watch a video they hadn't even previewed themselves. That's piss poor teaching, wouldn't you say? And they turned the video off before it was finished, so it's not like the dumb vid was mandated by Obama to be viewed by all students.

Nobody forced anybody to do anything. I think you should be calling into question the decision making skills of these teachers. That video shouldn't have been shown to Elementary school children. If these bleached focks would have exercised the least bit of common sense, this would be a non-issue.

You expect government school teachers to use common sense? ;) If you have no problem with the words, "I pledge to serve Barack Obama" then you just don't get the big picture.

Couple things:

Obviously the school administrators should have watched a video before they showed it to the school. That is bad judgement on their part but it seems they copped to it, so no harm no foul. Whatever.

My question is this however. Exactly where did the video come from, and how was it distrubuted to the school in the first place? If this in anyway comes from a gov't or gov't backed entity meant to be shown to public schools then.....Houston, we have a problem.

Also, comparing public school to a camp is just dumb.

Ashton Kutcher and wife Demi Moore called up a few friends — and teamed up with MySpace and Katalyst Pictures — to produce the star-studded "Presidential Pledge" video and help encourage community service.

In the clip, Jason Bateman, Dakota Fanning, Nicole Richie, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Kevin Connolly, Lucy Liu, Cameron Diaz, Molly Sims and other stars pledge their service to Barack Obama and encourage others to do the same by going to USAService.org and finding a cause they want to get involved with.

"My wife and I, since we met, had been looking for a charitable cause that we can stand in front of," Kutcher told the Los Angeles Times. "We've stood behind a bunch of them, but we wanted to do something where we could make a quantifiable change in the world. Someone came into our office and had the idea of doing pledges for Obama, and instantly it was like, 'We have to do this.' "

I wasn't speaking to you directly as another poster brought it up in some sort of diversion attempt. It's apples to oranges and isn't relevant to the discussion.

Thanks for the link. :headbanger:

So it's a video from celeb's. Which is perfectly fine if that's what they want to do since it isn't backed by the gov't.

Really bad decision by the school to show it though. They realized it and apologized, so it is a non issue to me.

But I'll disagree that it isn't pertinent to the discussion. 'Hawker is intent on proving this vid to be some sinister attempt to indoctrinate American youth with the liberal/socialist ideology. It's a focking video with a bunch of B-list stars. It is not a systematic thought program aimed at infecting young minds with the leftist agenda. Jesus Camp shows exactly how to bend kids' minds around a particular ideology. I brought it up as a means to expose 'Hawker's hyperbole. I don't know why alias 298765 picked it up and ran with it.

I think most fair minded folks will see this for what it is: a political vid made by fading stars that shouldn't have been shown to elementary students. Instead, we'll have folks convinced this is some ploy to corrupt American youth........ahhhh, extremism.

Obama is hardly the first president to speak directly to schoolchildren. In October 2001, President George W. Bush urged children to donate a dollar to America's Fund for Afghan Children. And in 1991, President George H.W. Bush conducted a teleconference with students on the topic of math and science.

Jesus Christ, the Palin/Joe the Plumber Teabaggers like RP and Fla are the dumbest motherfockers on the planet. Tragically, these are just board personalities, there's that whole "23% 'er" crew who thought GWB was a great president who just can't deal with the most basic shiit. OH MY GOD! Two points:

1- Is the start of your second farewell tour? Doosh.

2- This has nothing to do with Obama's upcoming "talk"-- this has to do with the phrase "I pledge to seve Barack Obama" being forced on captive school children without parental consent.

Unfortunately you're too fockin' stupid to realize the difference.

Yes, Bush spoke to school children about the dangers of drugs no problem there. If Obama wants to talk about the importance of school, great; if he starts telling kids to talk their parent about green cars and healthcare, yea I have a fockin problem. Now take off you lyin sack of shite.

Wiffle posted his post in the wrong thread. This thread is about a video shown that was made by liberal celebs. Wiffle is talking about the Sept. 8th school speech Obama is gonnna give; which is why he quoted a non linked quote about Bush talking to students as well.

Two different subjects.

It's fitting that in Wiffles first post back, he was so anxious to belittle people that he got confused himself and posted in the wrong thread topic. :shocking:

nope, nothing's changed. including problematic retorts from holier-than-thou libs that leave out how pat schroeder, ###### gephardt, and a bunch of other woodstock pot smokers went apeshiit over aforementioned hw bush talk about math and science. where are the apeshiit pot smokers now that the cult leader wants to talk? question authority, right? wasn't that what the pot smokers said? so why, all of a sudden, do the same pot smokers think everyone should bow down to obtrusive govt and it's communist leader? as said before, if even one of the democrats gets re-elected in the next congressional race, americans have cashed it in.

As Americans, we never pledge to an individual person. Every oath of office doesn't include a person, might include a position, ideals, or the constitution.

THis is stupid.

I swear by God this holy oath, that I want to offer unconditional obedience to the Führer of the German Empire and people, Adolf Hitler, the commander-in-chief of the Wehrmacht, and be prepared as a brave soldier to risk my life for this oath at any time.
