MLCKAA 573 Posted December 9, 2009 Our son's name is Sam and "Sambo" just rolls off the tongue very naturally as a nickname. Someone told me stop using it because it is a racial slur. its from before my time, so it never occurred to me. I don't think I've ever heard it used in my entire life as an insult. Strike 5,535 Posted December 9, 2009 Call you kid whatever you want. If you don't intend it to be racial in nature it's not. Black people call each other the N word all the time and aren't called racists. Idiot PC police can fock off.

Big_Pete 0 Posted December 9, 2009 this is getting ridiculous! It's not gonna be long before you can't even say "hi" or "hello" without some retard claiming that those words were once used as racial slurs. This is ridiculous. Savage Beast 1 Posted December 9, 2009 Sambo means half breed slave. It is also a Russian form of wrestling. Is your son a half breed slave? Or is he a Russian wrestler? Or is he both?
kilroy69 1,248 Posted December 9, 2009 if i called my dog cracker is it offensive?it's my dog, who cares? And really its not like he's calling his kid Kike or kunta kinte for christs sake. Have you ever heard anyone called sambo as a derogatory term? Edited to say its funny how you can say things like kike and it gets through the sensor. GobbleDog 996 Posted December 10, 2009 Yes. At least in the South it still is. Along with "Tar-Baby" from the old Br'er Rabbit and Uncle Remus stories. My parents read all those to me as a kid about 30 years ago. I doubt any parents read that anymore. Kinda like they've quit airing all the old Warner Brothers cartoons with "mammy" blacks and other stereotypes I grew up watching.

kilroy69 1,248 Posted December 10, 2009 i don't even know what kike means? i've never heard anyone use it in real life, only in movies. Yea, really neither did I till I was like in my mid 20's. But it kinda goes to the point. I grew up in the heart of dixie and I never in my entire life ever heard anyone reffered to as sambo that wasnt in fact named sam. No, what the fock does Sambo mean? I had to actually look it up on wiki. I really had no idea.

Joey Gladstone 33 Posted December 10, 2009 Better "Sambo" then "Samantha", which is what all the kids will be calling him in school.

Let Da Big Dog Eat 40 Posted December 10, 2009 if i called my dog cracker is it offensive?it's my dog, who cares? If your dog was white, funny as he11. Also works if the dog goes nuts for doggy treats. I had a black Schnauzer when I lived in SC. Named her Chvartzer (sp?). Yiddish term meaning black. Thought it was hilarious as he11. 10:00 at night and I am yelling out the back door "Here Chvartzer, Come Chvatz." Never asked what the neighbors thought. Didn't care. Name your dogs or your kids whatever you want.
kilroy69 1,248 Posted December 10, 2009 Should I worry that my black cats name is el negro? I mean my he is a spanish black cat. But the neighbors do look at me odd when I yell here negro, negro, negro. Well, that and I get like 3 black dudes at my door wanting to smoke a joint. peenie 1,915 Posted December 10, 2009 what if i named my dog cracker because he likes to eat crackers or because he is colored like a cracker. even though i am not calling him a racial slur someone will think i am. maybe it will only be 1 person out of 100 that will think i'm being racist or insensitive. i think because i might offend that one person, that is enough reason not to name my dog cracker. sambo may not offend most people, but it will offend someone. what is worse, is if someone angrily questions your innocent son about his nickname. kilroy69 1,248 Posted December 10, 2009 sambo may not offend most people, but it will offend someone. what is worse, is if someone angrily questions your innocent son about his nickname. Then his son can innocently point out that his name is sam and reading anything more into it is both moronic and shows where that persons mind resides. Deciding how offensive something is (and how socially unacceptable) always comes down to that.... percentage of population offended by it. "1 out of a 100".?. That ain't much.
