Our son's name is Sam and "Sambo" just rolls off the tongue very naturally as a nickname. Someone told me stop using it because it is a racial slur. its from before my time, so it never occurred to me. I don't think I've ever heard it used in my entire life as an insult.

Yes. At least in the South it still is. Along with "Tar-Baby" from the old Br'er Rabbit and Uncle Remus stories.

 

My parents read all those to me as a kid about 30 years ago. I doubt any parents read that anymore. Kinda like they've quit airing all the old Warner Brothers cartoons with "mammy" blacks and other stereotypes I grew up watching.

Yea, really neither did I till I was like in my mid 20's. But it kinda goes to the point. I grew up in the heart of dixie and I never in my entire life ever heard anyone reffered to as sambo that wasnt in fact named sam.
