Not long ago, I was driving down a highway and spotted a cardinal sitting right on the center stripe, with vehicles passing within inches at 55 mph.

I pulled over, ran out, picked it up and put it in a box.

It seemed dazed, as if it bounced off a windshield.

I put it in a blanket, put out some water and set it by the front door.

It was still alive the next morning, so much so that it had hopped up on a nearby low limb.

That afternoon, he had hopped up to a higher branch. He looked down at me, chirped and flew off. I didn't think there was any way in hell he'd survive, but he did.

That's a rescue.

I don't see myself as a hero. I just try to help defenseless, abused or neglected creatures survive and find loving homes. If respecting that isn't in your emotional wheelhouse, that's your issue and something only a professional counselor could address.

Use the proper words. Don’t prop yourself up with a nonsensical term. It’s self serving and glory seeking. Leave the rescue stuff for people who actually do something brave. Going to the pound isn’t brave. People did it for years without having to call attention to themselves. Facebook society ruins perspective.
