Things are looking up. Solid core of players and IF Alex Smith can be a solid NFL QB, they can be a serious contender in the NFC. Two first rounders, 13 and either 16-17 depending on a coin flip. Here are my first round thoughts:

If Haden or McClain are still there at 13, I would be very happy. Haden looks like a potential shut down corner and it would allow them to possibly move Clements to safety. If he slides by Cleveland at 7, we have a decent chance of getting him. LB isn't a position of need, but if Haden is gone and McClain is still on the board, you have to take him. Would love to see him and Willis together for the next ten years. If both of them are gone, they go OT. Okung will be gone, but Davis may still be on the board as will Buloga. Buloga is a guy who is moving up the board and I think would be a great fit. There is a good chance he is still on the board at 17, which would be the perfect scenario, Haden/Buloga or McClain/Buloga. If they go OT at 13, I wouldn't be surprised to see them trade down out of the 17 spot, into the later part of the first to pick up another 2nd or 3rd rounder.

SF took some flack last year for trading their 2/4 for Carolina's 1st in 2010. What a difference a year makes......

While I know we need OL and secondary help, which will more than likely be addressed with our 2 first round picks, here's a scenario JUST for consideration that I think would help us. Seattle has 2 first round picks early as well and consensus has been telling us that they'll take a RB with one of those picks, likely #14 their second pick. When pick 13 rolls around RB CJ Spiller is still on the board. I say we go ahead and take the top rated RB with our first pick. Not only does this give Smith another weapon to be successful it would keep a division opponet from getting the top RB. Yes we have Gore and he's only 27. He's only played 16 games once in his career. Spiller could start out spelling Gore and would be good insurance should Gore miss any significant time. Numerous NFL teams have mutiple RB's that can come in and start. As I see it we really only have Coffee that might be able to handle a full workload if Gore's out. We could address the O-line issue with our 2nd first round pick in taking the best OT on the board. Then we could address the secondary issue in round 2,3 or explore FA. If we took Spiller then we'd have two top notch RB's and a future franchise back in CJ. Yes we need defensive help but you gotta put points on the board to win and Spiller would just give us another weapon to be able to do that. If Smith is our future QB then don't limit him, give him all the help you can on offense, which is why I say taking Spiller would be a smart move. Hey, we didn't expect Crabtree to fall to us last year but he did and I don't think people were sorry we took him. So should be the case with Spiller.

Ravens,Colts,Jets,Cardinals,Panthers,Cowboys,Vikings,Saints and the Giants are just some of the teams that have multiple backs that could be starters and for the most part they've been successful and all of those teams I listed made the playoffs except Carolina and the Giants.Yes we have Glen Coffee but I don't think he's enough. If we don't take Spiller with our first pick you can almost bet that Seattle takes him right after our first pick and we lose out on him. I think Gore still has another 3 or 4 years of great production but what do we do if he's out any length of time. It sets us back,IMO, if we have to rely on Coffee and what's behind him.I say emphatically that the right pick for us at #13 would be CJ Spiller. He could possibly play like a Percy Harvin role at the start and we've all seen how well Harvin helped the Vikings this year. So there it is.I've laid out my scenario for what I think the 49ers should do with their first pick in round one. If we go this route I'm sure it'll make a difference by season's end. If Waner retires I think our chances increase of winning the divison. Please take Spiller and don't stranglehold the 49ers from having good offensive playmakers and putting points on the board. Our future would be bright if we end up taking RB CJ Spiller,IMO.

Well the good news is...both of these scenarios are entirely plausible and both would be fantastic. If we get any combination of Berry, Earl Thomas, Haden, Spiller, Bulaga, Iupati, Davis, McClain with our first two picks this draft will have been an enormous success.

Adding a minor update:

Patrick Willis has bowed out of the Pro Bowl with a "slight" right knee injury.

Per beat writer Matt Barrows, Willis is dealing with swelling from bursitis. The Niners insist he would be "good to go" if it was a regular season game. Panthers LB Jon Beason, who should have been invited all along, is taking his place.

-per Rotoworld via Matt Barrow's.

...and everyone knows about this, and while it's not really 49ers news it affects us and our division, so I will list it.

Kurt Warner announced his retirement from football Friday, as expected.

Warner's career will go down as one of the most unique in NFL history. He famously went from stocking shelves at a grocery story while playing in the Arena league to becoming one of only two quarterbacks in history to lead two different franchises to the Super Bowl. The two-time NFL MVP escaped a five-year drought in the middle of his career to own the three highest single-game passing totals in Super Bowl history. Though it may not be on the first ballot, the 12-year veteran sharpshooter will end up with a bust and a yellow jacket in Canton, Ohio.

I expect Berry to be gone by our first pick, but if Haden or McClain drop I would be thankful for the good fortune 2 years in a row. I have to say, I wasn't sure what to think about drafting Spiller. I know he's talented, but I thought Gore still had some years left, and we took Coffee last year, so it wasn't a big need. Lately, though, I have been warming up to the idea, and you provided a well thought out argument, Doc. As far as defensive backs go, there should still be some good players to choose from in the 2nd round if we end up waiting that long, and it sounds like it's a fairly deep safety class this year.

I hope I'm wrong but, I just don't think Smith has a big enough arm to be a solid pro. There are just too many throws that he can't seem to make. We should be working the Phones with Philly to see if there is any thruth to the rumors at all. This team is good enough right now to make the playoffs with a QB like McNabb.

Good young talent doesn't stay young long in today's NFL.

While the notion of bringing in McNabb is an intriguing one, I'm not quite ready to cast Alex Smith adrift quite yet. Yes, his first five years have been disappointing, but this past year he actually looked a little more comfortable back there. Given that this will be his first chance to start the season with the same OC and playbook from the previous year (how ridiculous is that???), I'd like to see how he builds on the second half of last year.

I feel they should focus on the interior, especially on offence. They managed to cut down on their sacks allowed by over 20% (from 55 to 40), and I like Baas and Staley on the left side, but I'd love to see them shore up the right side with their first pick or two.

Of course, this is on the assumption that Haden and Berry are gone by the time the Niners are picking. If either are available, that changes things a little bit.

Not sure why you guys are speaking of the prospect of drafting Spiller as a replacement for Gore. Aside from being a complement to Gore's between the tackles style, his primary allure would be his ability to fix our woeful KR/PR game. On the subject of McNabb, the only way I'd feel comfortable with that would be if we just came out and dumped Smith and put our future on the shoulders of Nate Davis. McNabb and he are very similar. Would be a great grooming matchup. But it seems we're hitched to Smith again so none of that is going to happen. I'm pretty excited to see what Smith / Crabtree / Davis / Gore / Morgan / Hill can put together in an entire offseason with the same offensive philosophy they had the previous season. Consistency has been this teams biggest problem.

I never thought Spiller would be a replacement, and that's partly why I was skeptical of taking him that early. I also thought we could get a suitable returner in another round. But you guys make good points, and complementary backs are making a big impact for certain teams.

I am too. With no QB competition in the offseason (as of now), Smith should get plenty of reps and time to focus on leading the team.

Here's why I'm not crazy about Spiller at 13 (assuming he is still on the board) even though they need a play maker. I think Javaid Best will still be there in the mid second and he can do pretty much what Spiller can do, at a cheaper price. Would be an awesome pick, and god knows, SF doesn't want to let another local product get away, ala Desean Jackson.

They really need both 1st rounders to contribute immediately, and addressing the secondary and OL early is a priority. The more I read about him, I really think Buloga is the guy. Him and Staley would be nice bookends for the next decade.

Not sure Jahvid Best would be there for us in the 2nd round. Seen a lot of mocks having Best going late first round to teams like N.E.(22),G.B.(23) and San Diego(30). Quite possible one ofthese teamstake him with their first pick. I'd say it would be more likely for the Pats or the Chargers take him as they both need rb's. While some don't like us taking Spiller he could be Chris Johnson-lite or even like Percy Harvin but with better numbers. We see how much Harvin helped the Vikings this year and Spiller could do the same for us. No need for him to replace Gore right now or in the near future. Spiller has strengths and skills that we could play to and could be on the field together with Gore. Here's our chance to get a player much like a combo of Chris Johnson/Percy Harvin and it'd be a shame if we pass this guy up. If we do just watch and see what he does for the team that drafts him. If he goes to Seattle and turns around and burns the 49ers there will be a lot of unhappy people knowing we could have had him.

49ers likely to receive one compensatory draft pick

The 49ers will likely have nine draft picks this year, as the club expects a late-round compensatory pick - most likely in the seventh round.

49ers free agents lost (5)

TE Billy Bajema (Rams)

DT Ronald Fields (Broncos)

WR Bryant Johnson (Lions)

QB J.T. O'Sullivan (Bengals)

CB Donald Strickland (Jets)

49ers free agents gained (4)

DE Demetric Evans (Redskins)

LB Marques Harris (Chargers)

WR Brandon Jones (Titans)

FB Moran Norris (Lions)

Minor news, but a worthy bump I suppose. More draft picks is always nice.

Paraag Marathe promoted to Executive Vice President of Football and Business Operations.

In his new role, Marathe will continue to report directly to general manager Scot McCloughan on football matters. He will now also report to 49ers president and CEO Jed York on the business side of the organization. Marathe will work alongside the chief marketing officer when an individual is hired for that newly opened position.

The 49ers list Marathe third among team management on the club's directory, below York and McCloughan.

Keith Smith (CB) signed to reserve/future contract. (Rotoworld via Adam Camplan Twitter)

49ers signed CB Keith Smith to a reserve/future contract.

Smith, 30, was on San Francisco's roster late into last year but made no impact. He'll be a long shot to make it as a dime back in training camp

Tony Curtis (TE) signed to reserve/future contract.

Curtis saw game action in 16 games in 2007 and in 2008 with the Dallas Cowboys. A blocking specialist, Curtis has 11 career receptions for 50 yards and 3 TDs.

Derry Beckwith (LB) signed to reserve/future contract.

Beckwith was on San Diego's practice squad last year after going undrafted in the 2009 draft out of LSU. He has special teams upside, but is backup material on defense.

Seeing as how my pimping of the Niners taking Spiller at 13 was unfavorable, I've seen a few mocks with some picks I'd be happy with if we don't take Spiller.First pick I seen I'd be happy with at 13 was CB Joe Haden. Clearly he's the best corner in the draft and we'd definitely benefit taking him if he slipped to us like Crabtree did. He could contribute right away. Since there's a lot of depth it seems at OT in the draft we could take Haden at 13 and still get a decent OL at pick 17. I've seen guys like Bruce Campbell and Trent Williams available for our second pick. If Haden somehow falls to 13 it would be a steal and taking one of the 2 OL I named would give the 49ers an excellant first round IMO.

I would love to see SF get Haden. Do wonders for the secondary and give them so much more flexibility.

Campbell seems to be dropping in the last month or so on most boards. His physical ability seems to be taking a back seat to injury concerns and work ethic. Buloga and Davis are shooting up the boards, so unlikely they are available at 16/17. If Haden is gone at 13 and either Buloga or Davis are still on the board, that would be the move IMO.

If they go OT at 13, Earl Thomas would make a nice pick at 16/17. Kind of an Ed Reed type safety..........

Not quite official, but close enough:

Source: Franklin given Franchise Tag.

After failing to lock Aubrayo Franklin into a long-term contract, the San Francisco 49ers notified the nose tackle on Tuesday that they are giving him the franchise tag, according to a source. Under the franchise tag, Franklin has a one-year guaranteed contract offer at $7.003 million. Any team wishing to sign him other than the 49ers would have to be willing to give up two first-round draft choices.

I think of it as more of a "do it again and we'll talk long term" action than a "failing to lock him up" action, but I digress. Good to get this out of the way.

Sproles to be a UFA and the 49ers should be first in line.

In less than a week, Darren Sproles will likely to be an unrestricted free agent. And at 9:01 p.m. (PT) on March 4 - the first minute the move is legal - the San Francisco 49ers should make the arrangements to get him on the next flight to the Bay Area. Moreover, I think it's a realistic possibility.

Coach Mike Singletary promised the 49ers would place an emphasis on improving the return game this offseason. There have been hints all along the 49ers planned go after a top-notch return man. And Sproles could be that man. The 49ers, theoretically, could sign Sproles without compromising their salary structure.

Being able to take Spiller off the board so we could truly draft BPA@Need positions would be fantastic!

I would be surprised if SD let him go, but Sproles would be a great addition. How much would he ask for? He just got 7 mil last year, so he could be looking for a big paycheck. I did some research out of boredom just to see what we might have to pay if we took Spiller:

2009 Pick 13: Brian Orakpo - 5 yr/$20 million (12.1 mil guaranteed)

2009 Pick 17: Josh Freeman - 5 yr/$36 million (10.25 guaranteed)

Being a QB, Freeman interrupted the pay structure, but pick 16 got 5 yr/17.8 million (9.9 guar.). I'm blindly guessing we wouldn't sign Sproles for more than a few years, so he would probably be cheaper in that respect. If he asks for anything close to those draft numbers, I would almost say go with the younger (albeit unproven) option in Spiller.

I would be surprised if SD let him go, but Sproles would be a great addition. How much would he ask for? He just got 7 mil last year, so he could be looking for a big paycheck. I did some research out of boredom just to see what we might have to pay if we took Spiller:

But the point is that if they sign Sproles, then they can use their 2 number 1s to fill needs. He won't cost them anything but money. Draft Spiller and they only have 1 first rounder.

Sproles fills the 3rd down back role as well as the KR needs and they can still draft the Tackle and Defensive Back they desperately need with the first rounders..........

I agree, I just felt like doing some fact-finding. But I'm sure there is a limit to how much we would spend on him, and I wanted to get an idea of how much that COP back/KR could cost in the draft.

I know Sproles had a big payday last year, but I'm thinking somewhere around 3.5 a year for 3 years would be reasonable. That would make him cost effective and he would definitely fill a big need for the Niners.

49ers Tender Brooks, Baas

The 49ers have confirmed they assigned a second-round tender to linebacker Ahmad Brooks on Monday. They also applied an original tender to guard David Baas. If Brooks signs the one-year contract, he will earn $1.759 million. However, Brooks is free to negotiate with other teams when the free agent market opens Thursday night. If another team offers Brooks a signing sheet, the 49ers have the right to match the deal and keep Brooks or accept a second-round draft pick as compensation for losing him. Losing Baas would also bring a second-round pick, because that's the "original" round he was drafted in.

49ers DO NOT Tender Andrus, Release Clayton: (Per Rotoworld)

The 49ers have opted not to tender RB Thomas Clayton, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Despite intriguing talent on the practice field, Clayton never earned a role in three years with San Francisco and tore his ACL in 2009 training camp. It wouldn't be surprising if the former sixth-round pick is done in the NFL.

Edit: Andrus NOT tendered, Wilhelm signs 1-yr deal. Link

I'm not good at evaluating draft position post combine, but there it is. I'm must uncertain about Best at the mid-2nd. I'm not sure if he'll be there anymore.

I've looked at the draft a lot of different ways but I'm liking your first three picks. I have advocated Buloga with one of the first two picks, but hadn't thought of pairing Iupati with him. That would be kick ass. If Haden is available, I still would grab him despite his 40 time at the combine, but I think the Browns or Dolphins grab him before the 49ers get the chance.

I think there is a decent chance that Best will still be on the board at 2.17, especially now that Sproles has resigned with SD. He would cure a lot of weaknesses on both the offense and special teams.

Thompson would be a steal in the 4th.

I've never been more excited for a draft than this one. No matter what happens, we're going to get some baller players at need positions with our first three picks. I'll probably throw in a couple more mocks with different scenarios today or tomorrow so tune in if you're interested in that sorta stuff. :overhead:

Will do...........

I'm pretty excited about this draft too. Fun to have a couple picks in the top half of the 1st round. Also excited about the first two rounds being on Thursday and Friday. I won't feel so guilty about wasting my Saturday watching the draft............

Added one with a different feel. With the Titans and Giants being two of the picks between our 1sts, it leaves only the possibilities of a trade up or the Seahawks taking Spiller. I like those odds as the 'hawks have plenty of other holes to fill and there are lots of good RBs in the FA market this year.

RND1A - Joe Haden

Height: 5-11 | Weight: 190 | Position:DB | College: Florida

RND1B - CJ Spiller

Height: 5-11 | Weight: 195 | Position:RB | College: Clemson

RND2 - Golden Tate

Height: 5-11 | Weight: 195 | Position:WR | College: Notre Dame

RND3 - Selvish Capers

Height: 6-5 | Weight: 304 | Position:OT | College: West Virginia

RND4 - Sergio Render

Height: 6-3 | Weight: 318 | Position:OG | College: Virginia Tech

RND5 - George Selvie

Height: 6-5 | Weight: 247 | Position:DE | College: South Florida

RND6 - Kendrick Lewis

Height: 6-0 | Weight: 197 | Position:FS | College: Mississippi

RND7 - Dennis Landolt

Height: 6-4 | Weight: 308 | Position:OL | College: Penn State

Not trying to incite anything, but David Carr? Really?!? Are the Niners really going to go into this season with Smith and Carr as their QB's? Might as well try and land Vick so you can promote having 3 Number 1 Pick QB's in the media guide.

Any chance the front office would be interested in signing Delhomme to a reasonable 2-3 year deal? With a steadier QB situation this division is definitely yours. I know Delhomme has had more then his share of clunkers the past couple seasons (and that is an understatement) but I'd feel better rolling with him then Smith or David Carr.

Just my .02 Cents. Good luck this year :overhead:

Alex Smith is the starter and Nate Davis is the future. David Carr isn't going to change that...nor is he intended to change that. Assuming we even sign him. Mr. Willis has already tweeted about how dumb it would be to bring him in. I'm sure Carr would sign for less than what we're paying Hill though.

Well if Smith gets hurt, Carr will be your present (if signed). I wouldn't be happy about that.

Delhomme? I would rather have Smith any day of the week and I'm not really high on Smith. Delhomme is horrible, which is why Carolina cut him even though he would have only cost about a million more to keep him than they are on the hook for. Smith at least showed signs of 'getting it" last year. Still has way to many 'deer in the headlights" moments for me, but at least he has an arm. Delhomme is toast............

I agree with you on the Carr signing. I don't get it unless there is something I am missing and they think he is a better back up than Hill, and he is REALLY cheap. I would love to see them make a run for McNabb if Philly is willing to cut him loose for a 2nd. With above average QB play and a solid draft, the division is theirs.......

Other than Haden, I don't like this draft. SF absolutely has to address the RT position early. It killed them last year and while Capers may be a good player, I want more of a sure thing like Buloga or Williams.

I'm not crazy about Spiller that early, mainly because I really believe Best will be there in the 2nd and I don't see a huge difference. If he's not, it's not a big position of need for 2010 anyway, so not a huge loss. I would rather grab Iuapti the more I think about it. O-line is their achillies heel (QB too but they aren't going to draft one anyway). Fix that and we roll.

They need secondary help, but this draft is deep with DBs. Address those in rounds 2-3-4.

If Haden is still on the board, grab him, take the OT at 17, and look at Ducasse in the second round. He is moving up the boards fast. He will move to guard in the NFL and is the mauler type player that Singletary (and Ray Brown) love.

Anyway, this motivates me to put together a full 7 round scenario myself. Stay tuned.............

With Arizona giving half their team away, I'd have to say that the 49ers would be division favourites this year and that it may only need 8 or 9 wins.

Here's another scenario. I'm refraining from duplicate selections.

RND1A - Earl Thomas

Height: 5-10 | Weight: 195 | Position:DB | College: Texas

RND1B - Trent Williams

Height: 6-5 | Weight: 318 | Position:OT | College: Oklahoma

RND2 - Brandon Spikes

Height: 6-3 | Weight: 256 | Position:LB | College: Florida

RND3 - Jacoby Ford

Height: 5-09 | Weight: 181 | Position:WR | College: Clemson

RND4 - Myron Lewis

Height: 6-2 | Weight: 205 | Position:CB | College: Vanderbilt

RND5 - Brandon Carter

Height: 6-6 | Weight: 326 | Position:OG | College: Texas Tech

RND6 - Brian Jackson

Height: 6-0 | Weight: 203 | Position:CB | College: Oklahoma

RND7 - Nate Byham

Height: 6-4 | Weight: 268 | Position:TE | College: Pittsburgh

Having the monopoly on "Spikes" in the league would be stellar.
