ffnptown 0 Posted August 2, 2010 This is our first year for a keeper. We have the general rules as most other keeper leagues keeping only one player and losing that players previous draft position. Our keeper must be identified 3 weeks before thh draft. A question was brought up as to what happens if their keeper goes IR before the draft? I have a couple of ideas, but wanted some more input. Idea #1 - Tough Luck Idea #2 - Submit a primary keeper and a backup. If the primary player will be back before week #4 (we have a 14 week regular season), then you have to keep that player. If out longer than that, then the alternative player can be used as the keeper, but must be identified before the draft on Draft Day. Idea #3 - Submit a primary keeper and a backup. If primary is hurt, back up can be used, no matter when primary will be back. I really like # 2, but wanted to get some more advise.
Militia 0 Posted August 3, 2010 Our league has to declare the keepers on Superbowl Sunday. This eliminates a lot of that. Don't know if it's the right way or the wrong way, but it's just how we've always done it.
truebigdog 0 Posted August 3, 2010 Tough Luck.....injuries are part of the game. If you don't want to risk it, don't choose a keeper.
dpbuddha 9 Posted August 3, 2010 Why do you declare so far ahead of time? I don't see any reason to give advance notice, strategies have to be flexible during a draft, people need to adjust on the fly during a draft so it doesn't seem like learning who the keepers are at the last minute should change much. Honestly, if you look at all the rosters it should be fairly easy to identify who each team is likely to keep. Have everyone submit their keeper on paper into a hat/box etc before the draft and start the draft by reading off everyone's keepers. This might add 10 minutes to your draft but then people aren't getting screwed by training camp injuries.

Once declared they are your keepers. If they get hurt tough luck. 24 hours gives guys lots of time to see who is where on the depth charts and it gives the others in the league time to update their draft spreadsheets for everyones keepers. WhiteWonder 2,734 Posted August 3, 2010 tough luck if you want to minimize the risk, announce keepers closer to the draft. injuries are injuries. no do-overs.
mobb_deep 920 Posted August 3, 2010 tough luck if you want to minimize the risk, announce keepers closer to the draft. injuries are injuries. no do-overs. I agree. I require all keepers due 11:59 PM the Sunday before the draft (draft is always the weekend of week 4 of the pre-season). That limits risk to only practice of that week, leading up to week 4 of the pre-season (which no starters usually play in).
ffnptown 0 Posted August 3, 2010 We're going with 24 hours prior to the draft. At least for this year. We'll discuss at the owners meeting right before the draft. Thanks for all the input. Lots of good options.
Big Fella 0 Posted August 4, 2010 I would love to draft on the Sunday of Labor day, but a lot of guy in my league travel so we always draft the Sunday before. Keepers are announced a week before. This year keepers are announced 8/22, and the draft is 8/29.
sirwinzalot 1 Posted August 4, 2010 Tough Luck, that's why you wait till a week before the season starts like mine does, cause we had this problem in the past, so I moved it to the end of August for that reason.
Redstone 0 Posted August 4, 2010 We declare the holdover at the draft. It's a twenty year league. Come on, you are keeping just a single player. Drafting a fantasy team is not brain surgery. But of your three choices I like #3 as long as the player not used is thrown back into the draft pool.
epinindy 0 Posted August 4, 2010 In our league we declare keepers 3 weeks before the draft. If for some reason between the time the keepers are declared and the draft the player is injured the owner has the option to elect not to decide not to keep that player, they would simply imform the commish who would let everyone know and they would simply pick as if they kept nobody. They are not however allowed to select a different keeper at that time.

Dalemite 0 Posted August 5, 2010 Our (2) keepers get locked in once the draft starts, but a couple weeks before the draft we declare who we intend to keep. If something happens in the meantime such as an injury to a declared keeper or maybe an unrelated injury vaults a non-keeper into a starting role, then we allow the change. This is an odd league though, as everyone gets along. I've played in many leagues with much closer friends where this would be abused to no end.
