devius 4 Posted November 11, 2010 As amazed as I am that the Browns were able to beat not only the patriots but the defending champs the saints... not to mention not having a terrible first NFL start against Pitt's stout D. Thats 3 recent superbowl champions in which they beat 2 of the 3... and it wasn't like they were wins inspite of him... he had alot to do with those wins. What are the general feelings about the team and mangenius? as well as the direction of the team?

What are the general feelings about the team and mangenius? as well as the direction of the team? Not really a Browns' fan, but I live in Ohio so I watch the Browns play every week. I've been mildly impressed by Colt McCoy. While he doesn't seem to have a big arm, McCoy's made some throws when he's had to. And while he isn't overly fast/elusive, he's got some mobility and can move around the pocket (in fact, he had a really nice TD run against the Pats). Most importantly, it seems like the offense has rallied around him. He's clearly better than either Jake Delhomme and Seneca Wallace at this point. And he fits what the Browns want from their QB right now -- which involves not losing games through stupid errors and handing the ball to Peyton Hillis as often as possible. I'm not sure if McCoy has what it takes to be the Browns' franchise QB. However, it looks to me like he'll be a long-time NFL player -- either as a backup or as a game-manager type QB for some team. If the Browns can get more weapons at WR this offseason, then we may find out next year if McCoy has what it takes to be a legit long-term starter in this league. cdogge 17 Posted November 11, 2010 Not from cleveland...but I am from the Austin area... As much as I want Colt to be the "Real McCoy" Cleveland is living in a fantasy world if they think Colt is the future... This dude is the spitting image of Matt Gayheart... Honestly.. Very accurate with 5-10 yard passes but that IS IT... He's a pretty smart dude.. so I don't think he will ever be one of the 4-6 int type guys... but the same goes for td's to a much lesser degree. alex5444 0 Posted November 11, 2010 Cleveland fans are pumped about Colt. In his three starts he has proven to be a real gamer. He leads the team very well and is extremely accurate. He has also shown surprising elusiveness and the ability to throw on the run. This is all with the worst group of receivers in the NFL. He has two good pass catchers at tight end in Ben Watson and Evan Moore, and Hillis does well catching the ball out of the backfield, but none of our receivers scare anybody. Even so, McCoy keeps leading drives down the field. He's been great on third down and is completing nearly 70% of his passes. For a rookie, he's made excellent decisions and after the Browns limited him in the first two games, they really let him loose against New England and he stepped up to the plate. Over the last couple years, the city has been split on Mangini. Now that he was stripped of all front office titles and is able to focus on coaching, he has responded very well. The Browns have led in the 4th quarter in all but the Pittsburgh game and their schedule has been brutal this year. He and his staff have put together excellent game plans every week and they have been overmatched in terms of talent every single game. Even so, they are becoming a team that nobody wants to play. They are all hard workers and are extremely well coached. Also, the players stand behind Mangini. They are buying into his philosophy and it's paying off. The Confluence 0 Posted November 11, 2010 Not a lot to cheer about lately? They're the best team in Ohio! They beat the Superbowl champs and the Patriots! And they have a player (Hillis) that looks like he came from that Steel Town down the turnpike! Maybe the post season isn't on the list, but Cleveland has plenty to cheer about! They've had the toughest schedule so far (opponents-to-date are a combined 42-23) and they are 3-5 -- Not great, but serviceable. They still have to play the Jets, Jags, Panthers, Fins, Bills, and Bungles before closing out with the Ravens and Steelers. 8-8 is not out of the question. 9-7 or better is possible. Cheer hard! Anything can happen.

And I know Hillis has to be big man on campus over there. I live in california and have no real ties with Cleveland other than being a bystander to their recent as well as long past of heartbreak and its always nice to see a bright spot. I also think this is prolonging mangenius' stay there.... now question is... do they build around McCoy? Draft another QB? how to build off this recent success? gridiron whirlwinds 10 Posted November 11, 2010 I am a die hard Browns fan, from Coshocton, Ohio I am going up to watch the Jets game, this weekend. It will be my first game since the team has come back! There is no way that I was going to go watch that crap they called football, since they had come back. I still watched every single game on the NFL sunday ticket. I am very excited right now, as last weeks win, was the best FOOTBALL that this team has played since they came back. The positives that Colt has going for him is that he is in no way overwhelmed by being the starter and playing in front of alot of people. He started for FOUR years at Texas. He has fun and you can see that in his gameplay...He is VERY football smart. The kid is unbelievably accurate.....he completed 14 passes last week, and trust me...I have seen Derick Anderson have to throw 35 passes to complete 14....that is not the case with this kid. Colt has the knack to throw his receivers open,,,,,his accuracy on the run is every bit as good as Cutler's...but with out the great arm speed....The release is quick and compact, just WATCH it. What I see the most from the kid, is that he has what no other QB has had since we came back....and that is the "IT" Factor...he has "IT" I am not sure of his arm strength, when throwing in December at Cleveland and Baltimore, and Pittsburgh....those can be some windy and bad weather games.....that is yet to be seen. The kid reminds me so , so much of Brian Sipe, that it isn't funny. This is the first time I have been excited for Browns football in years......great times for Browns fans the last few weeks.....we deservr it and I hope the momentum continues to build. Go Browns. MicktheGreat 1 Posted November 11, 2010 As a Texas fan, I always believed his NFL game would resemble that of Jeff Garcia. After watching him play a few games, this is who McCoy reminds me of most. As I said earlier, McCoy (like Garcia) doesn't have a big arm. But he's accurate, somewhat mobile, and throws well on the run. Most importantly, McCoy seems like a "winner" and a leader -- someone who the offense can rally around. That said, I'm still not convinced that McCoy is a long-term starter or just a good backup in the NFL. But yeah...the Browns need to get him some more options on offense. The offensive line has a mean and nasty demeanor, which is exactly what you want from a bruising, run-first team. Though they might look to add a more traditional 3rd-down RB in the offseason, they look pretty set at RB for next year with Peyton Hillis playing well and Montario Hardesty hopefully returning from injury. At TE, Ben Watson has been very solid this year and Evan Moore is an impressive pass-catcher (he made a few ridiculous catches this preseason. But WR needs some major improvements. It's clear that, while he has some talent, Mohammed Massaquoi is nothing more than a decent depth guy in the NFL. Chansi Stuckey is the same (a decent depth WR but not starting material). The Browns seemed excited about Brian Robiskie's progress this offseason, but he's been totally invisible. Josh Cribbs looks better at WR and has made some nice catches; but, for whatever reason, the Browns seem content not to incorporate him more in the offense. Basically...all of their WRs are NFL backups, except for maybe Cribbs who has some WR potential but whom they seem to want to keep using mostly on special teams and gimmicky type plays. The good news for the Browns is that there are some good, young WRs that are likely to be in this year's draft: A.J. Green, Julio Jones, Michael Floyd, Jonathan Baldwin, Leonard Hankerson, etc. Of course, a couple of those WRs will likely be long-gone by the time the Browns pick; and there's no guarantee that the Browns will go WR early. But at least this would be a good year to do that.

And I'm actually a Steeler fan! I was bred to hate the Browns, but they are hard to hate this season. Hillis alone is worth the price of admission. Hardesty who? I don't know what games you've been watching but Colt is actually very fast and elusive. Been watching the kid since his freshman year at Texas and when he'd take off he looked like a RB. I bet he runs a 4.5. Colt is gonna be one hell of a NFL quarterback I can promise you that. The dude just wins.
devius 4 Posted November 11, 2010 whats nice is they've got plenty of games to gradually open things up for him a bit as well as giving them some time to evaluate if to build around him...
TheFid2 0 Posted November 11, 2010 Watching Colt play, his poise, and his football IQ as a rookie, I think there is no way he doesn't win a Superbowl in his NFL career.

Been watching the kid since his freshman year at Texas and when he'd take off he looked like a RB. I bet he runs a 4.5. Colt is gonna be one hell of a NFL quarterback I can promise you that. The dude just wins. Colt McCoy actually ran a 4.79 in he 40-yard dash, which is a good speed for a QB but certainly not elite speed. I think his absolute best 40-time was somewhere in the 4.65-4.68 range during his pro-day or something, but those 40-times are notoriously inaccurate. In comparison, Mike Vick (4.33) has what we might consider elite speed at the QB position. Even someone like Vince Young (4.58), whose 40-time was famously slower than anticipated, has very good speed for a QB. McCoy's time puts him in the next tier with players like Aaron Rodgers, Jason Campbell, & Ben Roethlisberger (who ran a 4.71, 4.72, & 4.75 respectively). All that said, while McCoy isn't "very fast" from the QB position, he has good speed. More importantly, as I said in my original post, he's mobile in the pocket and can avoid pressure, which is more crucial for a QB to have anyway.

Frank M 181 Posted November 12, 2010 He has very good poise in the pocket, makes his reads quickly, has a nice, quick delivery, good accuracy, and most importantly, makes some decisions that are very good for a rookie. I saw him throw the ball out of bounds twice when the protection was collapsing and nobody was open. So far, I'm very optimistic. The Browns need to be a run first team anyways, given that they play in the AFC North as well as the climate of northeast Ohio in the winter. I don't see McCoy being the next coming of Peyton Manning, but he may turn out to be exactly the kind of QB the Browns need.
