MNF Gets Political

Recommended Posts

ESPN has pulled the traditional Hank Williams, Jr., opening from tonight's Monday Night Football game because he said in a TV interview this morning that Obama playing golf with John Boehner was like Hitler playing golf with Netanyahu.

Really?

It's not like he said Obama WAS Hitler, and even if he did, aren't we all entitled to our opinions here in the "land of the free"?

I love someone's sig line on here that says something to the effect that the political correctness movement is fueled by people who are convinced that you can pick up a turd by the clean end. ESPN seems to want to polish the turd that is Hank Williams, Jr.

It's ok that he's a notorious alcoholic that often cancels his shows when he's unable to perform--and that he can't count (he also stated in the same interview that Obama and Biden were like the "three" stooges)--just don't say nuthin' unpatriotic!

Walt Disney is a known anti-Semite, and Disney owns ESPN, so you simply cannot insult Hitler by comparing to that piece of human garbage in Obama.

Freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom of consequences for that speech. HW can say whatever he wants, he's just not entitled to a spot on the MNF intro if he says things that scare off his sponsors. I don't see what the big deal is but I also don't feel too bad for him. I'd mostly like sports to stay apolitical to give me a break from that bullsh1t.

ESPN is just part of the liberal media. Political correctness trumps all, and you cannot speak out against a liberal, ever. They pulled Hank. They fired Rush. But had no problem employing that racist liberal jackoff Olbermann for years.

I understand that you can't threaten people, least of all the president, and other such potentially dangerous uses of speech, without consequences. But this comment seems rather benign to have caused such a reaction. Would anyone even have heard what Hank said if ESPN hadn't overreacted to it? I wouldn't have. Probly not many would have, and of those who did, so few would care as to be negligible. ESPN turned it into an attention-getter, for no particular reason, and I agree with you that to screw with a football tradition for political reasons is just asinine.

Clearly, I'm no particular fan of Hank's either, but I'm just sayin'...

QFT.

The entire political correctness 'movement' sickens me. I'd prefer they stay out of all sports entirely. That said, even drunken Hank should know not to drop Hitler into any phrase with the president.

EDIT: The Eastern Seaboard Programming Network turned this into a media circus because their ratings are dropping. They need all the attention they can get.

I don't know anything about Hank Williams and don't care what he said, I just think ESPN made a determination that his comments could cost them dollars and that's why they cut the intro - it is all about $$$. maybe they're overreacting but that's the risk when you're theoretically in the public eye like Williams.

Personally I'd just like political crap to stay as far away from football as possible, life is stressful enough, just give me my NFL please. :dunno:

"fueled by people who are convinced that you can pick up a turd by the clean end"

That's exactly what people thought when they voted for Obama.

I guess they found out the hard way that he is exactly just that...a turd.

That's right...he and the whole darn family who sat in Rev. Jeremiah Wrights church for 20 years.

But I guess reverse prejudice is just fine in this country.

Where did all these noobs come from?

This is a great forum for complaining about questionable firings over free speech issues since we regularly vote for phillybear GOTY. Further, posters here can't leave the Geek Club either because we all get banned whenever we visit other forums.

From what I've read, Hank Jr is a political imbecile who knows as much about politics as an overripe cantaloupe. Still, he was just analogizing two extreme opposites. And yes, he is entitled to whatever opinion he wants to hold. It is, as you say, the land of the free. So Hank need not worry about being arrested or thrown in jail for his comments.

HOWEVER...MNF is a product. And ABC and ESPN have the right to do anything they damn well please with the song they paid for to sell that product.

Holy god....i need a translator for these night posters on here.

First off....i couldnt care less if Hank sings the same tired intro they've been using for 75 years or not. I dont watch football to see him or Faith Hill butcher up an old Joan Jett song. I want to watch football.

Having said that....yes we get bombarded by political crap all the time.....keep it out of sports. You just cant call Obama Hitler. Hitler was not a socialist for one.......although they both wanted to make as many white people as uncomfortable as they can.....they are not quite the same.

Firing.....JUSTIFIED

The more important question is "who invited Hank Williams to give his opinion on anything?"

From Hank "Some of us have strong opinions and are often misunderstood. My analogy was extreme -- but it was to make a point. I was simply trying to explain how stupid it seemed to me -- how ludicrous that pairing was. They’re polar opposites and it made no sense. They don’t see eye-to-eye and never will. I have always respected the office of the President.”

Every time the media brings up the tea party it’s painted as racist and extremists -- but there’s never a backlash -- no outrage to those comparisons… Working class people are hurting -- and it doesn’t seem like anybody cares. When both sides are high-fiving it on the ninth hole when everybody else is without a job -- it makes a whole lot of us angry. Something has to change. The policies have to change.”

Everyone who complains about "freedom of speech" with these kinds of things is way off the mark. The First Amendment only applies to GOVERNMENT ACTION. The government cannot restrict your free speech (to an extent), but private actors, including corporations like ABC and ESPN, can do whatever the fock they darn well please.

Which is one of the reasons why Republicans want to privatize everything, incidentally. When you're dealing with a private company, you have no rights.

The government regularly bans free speech. Like in public schools. You are not allowing to talk about other races or religions or genders. You are not allowed to talk about these same people outside of school, outside of school property, on even on your own free time.

Now you have all this bullying horsesh!t, where even adults are being prosecuted for satire. More and more legislation is making internet and other free speech much more restrictive because everybody in this country has turned into a faggut that doesn't want their feelings hurt.

How about when some dumb broad eavesdrops on a private conversation at work and then complains to HR that something said offended them. One HR class we took pointed out a case where a delivery guy asked out a secretary after work for dinner. During the meal, the delivery guy said something with no ill intention that the broad took offense to. The next day, the secretary called the delivery guy's company, and he was fired for inappropriate speech even though it was not work related. The company won the court case for the incident too.

Of course, Obama's administration is constantly looking for whistleblowers to find bloggers against Obama's policies so they can go after these authors and sites and shut them down. Which they have done.

Obama has been given the right to shut down the internet access in this country during a time of "crisis".

NPR is given public funding. They fired Juan Williams because he wasn't liberal enough in his view points. And of course, their leaders were caught on tape disparaging certain ethnic groups. But they still receive their funding. So, in this case government supports free speech as long as it agrees with their view point only.

So, how exactly is the government not restricting our free speech, among some of these items I cited?

Although, it's not as bad as Canada. Yet. Up there, stand up comedians are being fined, banned from provinces, and even served jail time for jokes that any audience member may take offense to.

+ 1,000,000. Thats the deal too. Obama is destroying the nation so in a way its like a form of genocide: Hes killing all the productive citizens at the expense of the bums, losers, and neerdowells. Great.
