Alex Smith

Is this because the 49ers locked up Manning or Alex keeping his options open?

No, it's because he's pissed they worked him out. Smith and Manning both have the same agent, so he's been privy to every move. I can see the 9ers shooting him a line of bull while Smith actually knew the truth. I'd LOVE to see the 9ers end up without either.

The thing is, I don't think SF is worried that Smith signs until Manning makes a commitment.

Smiths best situation is in SF and he knows it. He's checking out other options in case Manning does sign in SF. Smart and prudent thing to do.

As a fan, I wouldn't be upset if he didn't come back to SF even if Manning signs with Denver or Tennessee. He just isn't that good. Frankly, if Peyton goes to Tennessee, I would love to see SF sign Hasslebeck for 2 years while Kapernick develops. IMO, it would give them a better chance to take the next step than sticking with Smith.

The same agent issue is kind of interesting in this situation. Doesn't seem in Smiths best interest to have his agent negotiating with SF on Mannings behalf.

I agree with everything you said (though it would be a little jarring to see Hass in that uniform).

If Manning ends up a 49er Im having nightmares of Alex Smith starting for Seattle. :(

Part of Harbaughs master plan to screw up Seattle's progress as a division rival and up and coming team........... :music_guitarred:

Too bad that Carroll is too smart to fall for it.

I'm surprised that nobody is talking about Hass to SF if Manning goes to Tennessee. I think he would do well in that offense, especially with the new receiving options.

I'd like to think he's too smart too. I've heard rumors Seattle would be interested, but Carroll and Schneider check out everybody.

I just saw the news on Manningham, excellent signing.

Don't worry, Smith won't end up in Seattle unless it's at a back up QBs pay scale after Manning signs in SF or after SF signs Hasselbeck. He won't get starter money anywhere else. Guy should have jumped when the 3 year, 24 million offer was on the table. He should fire his agent for not forcing him to sign that.

I like the Manningham signing too. Such an upgrade over what they had and should do well in the #3 role. Keep hearing that they want to play Crabtree in the slot so this signing makes that feasible.

I love the way Balke works. Very calculated moves. Doesn't jump and make foolish, snap decisions.

Yep. It's weird to see so much of that happening in the NFC West. Niners have been handling this situation perfectly.

Kind of funny how the NFC West is still perceived as weak, like it's still 2010..........

SF almost goes to the super bowl, Cards finish 8-8 with a back up QB for half the season and the Seahawks could have easily won 10 games. Plus, all three seem to have solid organizations in place with good head coaches. Even the Rams have a good, young QB, so at least they have some hope. Not the strongest division of course, but I wouldn't say weak for sure.

Fun to see a little bit of a rivalry with Seattle. Things got a little chippy last year. Something that has been missing in SF for a while. Hard to be a rival of anyone when you suck.

The NFC west had the 3rd worst out of division record in the nfl last season. Only the NFC east and AFC south were worse.

I'm aware. However, the 49ers, Seahawks and Cards are all vastly improved (from an organizational standpoint if not record) and moving in the right direction. In 2010, they were hands down the weakest division and they improved to 3rd worst in 2011 and should improve again this year. Only the Rams are non competitive at this point. I didn't say they were a strong division, just not weak anymore.

And they were tied with the AFC West.

Manning and Smith have the same agent. I wonder Smith he knows more than we think. Or he may be pissed at the Niners.

Well, I hope he knows something. It would be a first..........

The AFC teams are all secretly hoping this happens soon lol. I don't care what Alex may have done last season, I don't want him as a niner ever again. He's horrible and that's the bottom line.

Would anyone be surprised if they pay Alex Smith more than the Hawks are now paying Flynn? It would be idiotic for the Phins, but I don't doubt this would happen at all.

I would expect a veteran starter who took his team to the NFC Championship last year to command more money than a guy with two starts in meaningless games under his belt. Maybe Smith doesn't deserve it based on his pre-2011 numbers, but that's not what he'll negotiate with.

That said, I don't want Alex Smith on the Dolphins. I think he's only marginally better than Moore, despite his 2011 numbers, and he's not the kind of guy who can make a weak Dolphins WR corps better.

Niners should sign smith and trade him to the dolphins for Moore ha ha. As a niner fan, i don't want alexia smith another 3 years. I'll take Colin Ferrel Kapernick - 6"4, rifle arm who can scramble any day over Alexis.
