High Waiver Priority Strategies (followup to "waiver priority #1")

Recommended Posts

I already posted this as a reply to the guy who posted "waiver priority #1", but I really need some feedback here. Please let me know what you think about my waiver strategy and add any ideas....I have #2 priority for as long as I want it..once I use it I go to the end of the list, etc., etc. Here are my thoughts:

I have the #2 waiver in a 12 man league. I am currently pretty happy with the team I have in place - Romo, Chris Johnson, MJD, Julio Jones, Dez Bryant, Desean Jackson, Pettigrew. We are only allowed 4 running backs and my two backups are Rashaad Jennings and Redman (useless, I know).

Here is my philosophy: If you have a team you can definitely win with right now like I do, you hold out as long as possible (as long as you are winning) for that breakthrough player to claim off waivers. Don't worry about other league members with lower waiver priorities snagging players you weren't willing to take a chance on. If you aren't sure about a player, and you are still winning...who cares if they get taken by someone else? At this point, I'm waiting on a stud RB to emerge so I can add him to my bench for when MJD and Chris Johnson are on bye weeks or if Chris Johnson continues to underperform. Please give me feedback on my waiver philosophy...dissect it. Thanks!

I always look ahead and try and grab the waiver wire players the week before they go off. I never save a waiver. I don't care if it's 1, 8, 2, 7, 3... I just make my claims every week and usually get the top free agents on my team, and this is in very competitve leagues composed of people who are obsessed with fantasy football.

I respect that, but I don't like a complete guessing game. If you were me, who would you take right now with the #2 claim? I need an RB - would you take McCluster since he's listed as RB,WR?

RB is very thin, my waiver wire has nothing but junk on it, I am just hoping someone dumps a player out of frustration that I can add

Im sitting at no 2 in one league as well, I put in for Cobb, if I get him I'll be happy, if I don't ill wait

Yes if it's a ppr league. I'm trying to get McCluster myself because I'm thin at running back in a 1 point per reception (ppr) league. I'm not overly thrilled about McCluster but I'm desperate and he can put up points.

You have the right philosphy. Every year, a starting RB goes down with a season ending injury. If you have the #1 priority, you'll have the 1st shot at him. What league do you play in? If it's yahoo, you can check around 2:30-3:30am (Central time) and the waviers are cleared except for those who have put in a bid for them. Yahoo releases the claimed players to teams about 2 hours later. What I do is place a claim on a person then cancel it. Yahoo still holds it as a claim until all of the waviers are processed. That stops the early birds or shall I say people with no jobs who stay up late from making a claim so early. Use that strategy and save the prioirty. Once you fall to the last spot, claim as much as you want even multlply times on the same night.

I am in an ESPN, and waivers go through on Thursday morning at 5 am. I am not sure I follow exactly what you are saying. Basically, I need to place a claim on Spiller, then cancel it? And that keeps the next person in line from claiming him off waivers? Then I pick him up as a FA?

Sorry, I just didn't know about this strategy. Thanks.

I've been battling with this over this the last couple days sittin gin the #1 spot. I feel like there are enough people in my league that are like Gepetto that there's never going to be that unquestionable waiver pick up worth the #1 priority. LeShoure just got dropped and I think I'm going to burn it on him, Then go back to planning ahead and picking guys up a few weeks ahead of time.

No that's not what I'm saying. If Spiller is on the wavier wire now, pull the trigger! Fred Jackson is out maybe 8 months and Spiller's production was no fluke. The only league I know that claming a person then canceling it works in is Yahoo. It's not going to work is another person make a claim for the same person you did however they didnt cancel. It only works if people who stay up late in the morning waiting for yahoo to place the unclaimed players back into FA.
