The Wine Thread- What's your favorite?

Recommended Posts

I take this as mainly a beer crowd, but I know a lot of folks like wine, also.

I prefer the whites. And I like it chilled. My wine of choice is Riesling. I also like Pinot Grigio.

What is your favorite wine and how often and what situation do you prefer it?

Don't usually drink wine when I go out but will drink whatever the wife buys.

As a rule of thumb, whites in the summer....Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay.

Reds in the fall/winter. Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Merlot.

I have always enjoyed Chardonnay. Doesn't have to be too expensive; $25 - $40 bottle.

Occasionally one glass of any red wine during an evening meal.

Depends on what price range, I have a favorite for <$10, $10-$16, $17 - $24 and beyond. Depening on who I will be around will dicatate what price range I focus on.

Pinot Noir would be my first choice. David Bruce and Domaine Drouhin are two really good ones.

Dont care much for white wines.

I enjoy virtually every type of wine.

some preferences:

chilled:

- white rhone blends (viognier, marsanne, roussanne)

- dry rose

- alsacian reisling (more dry than german)

- chardonnay (enjoy aged french oak and newer american)

- beaujolais

- pinot gris (do not enjoy most italian pinot grigio)

reds:

- bordeaux blends (especially right bank- merlot driven- st. emellion and pomerol)

- california cab

- barolo- nebbiolo

- amarone

- australian shiraz

- zinfandel

- bigger pinot noir (usually french)

also enjoy sparkling wines, ports, muscatos, vin santo

My favorites are pinot grigio and viognier.

From the reds I like cabernet sauvignon, but I rarely drink red wine.

Depends on what I am eating/doing.

I like a nice dry Cab with beef/lamb. Brand is usually dictated by how much I want to pay. A Hawk Crest is a good, reasonably priced Cab that I like.

The Mrs. likes Merlot, so we usually have a bunch of the Sterling merlot in the rack for everyday types of drinking.

I don't really enjoy the whites as much as the reds.

I enjoy the finest vintage Recliner Whine

Really? I find that one to be bitter and reeks of sour grapes.

Also I rarely spend more than $17-18 on a bottle of wine because you don't have to. There are tons and tons of great wines in the $10-18 range.

Yep... there are good wines in just about every price point and paying more doesn't necessarily guarentee a better bottle.

Davinci and Ruffino are among my favorites just below that range, you can actually get some varieties of Coppola in your range

Maybe I am just overpaying as I usually a buy a bottle every month. Granted I don't know much about different wines - I just know what I have had and like and that I can't stand white wine. The one I really like that I have had is Silver Oak but that's like 200 a bottle I usually buy a bottle of Cakebread (80-100 a bottle) maybe once a month. Is there something comparable to those 2 at a cheaper price?

To be fair I kind of group all the water-like beer together as beverages to generally stay away from.

Pinot Gris

Riesling

Reds

Pinot Noir

Zin

Depending on what I'm eating, I would be happy with any of the above. My current favorite is a 2010 Elsa malbec.

while i agree that there are a lot of very good bottles out there in the $15-20 range, there are also a lot of poor ones. with an increase in price (usually more aged- developed, mellowed tannins, more attention to the process, etc), it is my opinions that the probability of attaining a good bottle increases. one does not have to spend $60+ to get a good bottle, but those shouldn't be bad.

moz- seems like you enjoy cali cab. for the $40-60 range try:

jordan

shafer

stag's leap

rombauer

raymond

clos pagase

also, if you are willing to try something different- the prisoner is an excellent blend.

Would be great to find some wine I like that priced decent as I actually like wine better than Beer - then again there is only 2 beers I buy -- Bohemia (mexican) , and Guinness from the can.

I would rather have wine as it's less calories and better for you in general.

also.... i find great value out of europe (of course there are tremendously expensive bottles as well). style and terrior are different from california, but give bordeaux a shot. left bank will be more cab driven, right bank merlot. without trying to be too biased, the more i am drinking the more i have been reeeaaalllllyyyy enjoying blends.... give some a chance.

'Gay' wine has twice the alcohol percentage as tough guy beer. Personally, I like both, but it's laughable to act like drinking the (much) weaker one is more macho.
