Waiver WR Scoop and Play (Week 9 Installment)

Hello and welcome to the new venue. Snatchit has agreed to consolidate all of the waiver threads into a single user friendly thread. Let’s make this a success and get some good chatter going. Just a recap, this post is NOT who I think will perform the best every week. It does NOT predict the hottest Waiver Wire pickups for upcoming weeks. These picks are the cast-offs, the forgotten cigarette butts, and the stray dogs at the humane society… ok, maybe not that poor, but the objective of this thread is to highlight players that have a good matchup to perform well in their respective skill sets, and should be available in most (and sometimes all) leagues.

Kendall Wright WR TEN @ STL

Locker didn’t look too shabby in his return against a stingy 49ers defense, and Wright emerged as his favorite receiver with 9 receptions on 12 targets. In fact, Wright averages 7rec/70yards/.25TDs per game with Locker at the helm this season. Look for that trend to continue with Britt on the bench and Washington being very erratic at times. Enter the Rams’ defense which has struggled against the pass this year. In fact, through week 7 STL has given up 1,217yards and 9TDs to opponent WRs (still yet to play Seattle week 8). Did I mention that Wright leads the team in targets and is 2nd only to TE Walker in red zone targets? There is no reason this man shouldn’t be rostered on your squad down the stretch, yet he is only owned in 26% of yahoo leagues.

Last 3WR2s against STL

LaFell 3rec 38yards

Hopkins 3rec 47yards

Blackmon 5rec 136yards 1TD

Prediction

Wright 6receptions 91yards 1TD

Ted Ginn Jr. WR CARvsATL

Atlanta is in a tailspin, and has been really struggling on the defensive side of the ball in the past few weeks. Last week the Cardinals had 3 plays of over 20 yards made by wide receivers. One of the plays was a 51 yard bomb to converted cornerback Teddy Williams, who would have had a walk in TD if hit in stride. Enter Ted Ginn Jr. who specializes in the big play, and who is getting more targets than LaFell the past two weeks. Is this a trend? Will Ginn Jr. start seeing a larger role in this offense? Only time will tell, but there is no doubt that the Panthers have been trying to find new ways to get Ginn involved as of late. As for this matchup, I have little doubt that the 6'1", sub 4.28-40 Ginn will be able to create some space against the 5'10" Samuel or the 5'9" inch Mcclain this weekend. The Falcons have also been shredded on the ground the past couple of weeks. I wouldn't be surprised to see a few shots taken downfield after a play action pass. Best of all, Ginn Jr. is only owned in 12% of yahoo leagues, so don’t be afraid to scoop and play.

Last 3WR2s against ATL

Floyd 3rec 30 yards 1TD

Williams 3rec 34 yards

Kerley 5rec 68yards 1TD

Prediction

Ginn Jr 4rec 80yards 1TD

Jerome Simpson WR MIN @DAL

The Cowboy’s Pass Defense has been simply awful this year which was easily visible in their 4th quarter meltdown against Det. The Lions demonstrated that, once again, the Cowboys are unable to cover the deep ball, whether it is along the sidelines or right over the middle. Until the cowboys fix their situation at safety they will be gashed for deep gains all year. Carr will likely draw Wallace which leaves the 2nd year Morris Claiborne the task of covering Simpson. Claiborne is synonymous with sporadic play, and he might have trouble guarding the steady 6’2” Simpson who has a 3inch height advantage in this contest. Look for the Vikings to either exploit this matchup or try to get Cordarelle Patterson more involved as I believe that Sean Lee and Brandon Carr will be able to cover Rudolph and Wallace. I shouldn’t have to mention that the cowboys have also been scoring points at a good clip, to the tune of 31 ppg while allowing 22ppg… needless to say the Vikings will have to score some points to keep pace in this one, as their D hasn’t been stopping anyone either. Best of all, Simpson is only owned in 15% of yahoo leagues, so don’t be afraid to scoop and play! (Patterson is owned in only 10% if you have the marbles)

Last 3WR2s against DAL

Durham 4rec 54 yards

Cooper 6rec 88yards

Moss 2rec 42yards

Prediction

Simpson 7rec 99yards 1TD

Rod Streater WR OAK vs PHI

The Eagles Secondary has been torched all season. In fact they rank worst in the entire league in yards AND receptions AND TDs given up to opposing WRs. (1708yards, 139rec and 14TDs respectively). Pryor has matured a lot in the past couple of weeks, and I like his ability to extend the play and get the ball downfield. Enter Streater who has quietly led the team in receptions and targets in the past two weeks and I think it is about time for his break-out game. Denarius Moore should draw Fletcher, leaving either gimpy Cary Williams (hamstring) or the 5’10” Brandon Boykin to cover the 6’3” Streater downfield. Do yourself a favor and roll the dice with Streater this weekend. Best of all, Streater is only owned in 6% of yahoo leagues, so don’t be afraid to scoop and play.

3WR2s

Nicks 7rec 51yards

Williams 6rec 71yards 1TD

Wright 7rec 91yards

Prediction

Streater 5rec 86yards 1TD

Deep League Reach

Dexter McCluster WR KCvsBUF

Don’t look now, but Andy Reid has figured out that Alex Smith can’t get the ball downfield. What has ensued is an expanded role in the offense for McCluster over the past 2 weeks. McCluster has doubled his receptions AND yards in just the last two games. It now appears that he is the 2nd receiving option behind Charles. In fact over the past 2 games McCluster is averaging 7.5 targets and 5.5 receptions add that with the 2 carries per game, and you have a WR that is getting over 7 touches per game. This is good news for McCluster owners with his game breaking speed. Start McCluster with confidence this week as he faces a putrid Bills Defense that is among the leagues’ worst against opposing WRs surrendering 1,650+ yards and 14TDs halfway through the year. Dexter is only owned in 3% of yahoo leagues, so don’t be afraid to scoop and play.

Last 3WR2s vs BUF

Stills 3rec 152yards 2TDs

Gibson 5rec 40yards 2TDs

Jones 3rec 71yards 1TD

Prediction

McCluster 6rec 91total yards 1TD

Davone Bess WR CLEvsBAL

This one is a bit of a stretch, as the ravens aren’t the best matchup, and their offense doesn’t score too many points. However, it can’t be ignored that veteran QB Jason Campbell took over at QB for the unforeseeable future, and locked on to the only veteran WR on the squad during the last 2 drives of the game. Davone Bess probably won’t overtake Gordon, or anything, but could leap over Little and take some targets away from Cameron in the process. In PPR leagues, Bess could be serviceable this week if he and Campbell can build a rapport. Look for Bess to get 5+ receptions as CLE will need to keep drives alive to keep this game close. Bess is only owned in 1% of yahoo leagues.

Prediction

Bess 5rec 66yards 0-1TD

Hard Times Pick

Aldrick Robinson (if hankerson Is unavailable)

The coaching staff said that they were looking for ways to get the speedy Robinson more touches to stretch the D after his 50yard TD grab against the Bears. Yet he had zero catches Sunday against the Broncos. Enter the chargers… and forgive me if I sound like a broken record… who give up pass plays of 20yards or more like it is going out of style. In fact, they are averaging a little over 4 passing plays of 20+yards per game. I may be off here, but look for a few designed deep looks or bubble screens to Robinson this week as they try to stretch the field in order to keep the chargers honest and open up some lanes for Morris. If he is going to have a break out game this season, this is it! Best of all, Robinson is owned in 0% of yahoo leagues… you could be the first!

Prediction

Robinson 2rec. 75 yards 0-1TD

it seemed like some folks weren't too keen on this post being in the other thread, Mostly i think because of the length and the space each quote monopolized. For week 9 we'll try it on the mainge bored and in the consolidated weekly thread. Let me know which you'd prefer.

It can also be found here at the consolidated official weekly pickups thread

You are assuming that "insert horrible viking qb of the week here" will be able to hit a target more than 5 yards down the field. I'm not sure they can move the ball on any defense.

I am not sure that any WR has had a very good game against teh Saints this year. This might amount to "decent" but that's all.

Out of these I like the Streater and Wright calls the best, I would probably pick up Wright first if he's available.

McCluster makes a nice add and hold, but I don't know that I would start him, he has typically disappeared in the past. However KC needs a WR1, becayse Bowe isn't even that anymore. A WR like McCluster makes sense in this offense.

The name I would throw out there is Dobson. It's going to be the Gronk, Vereen and Dobson show in NE very soon, the biggest problem is that Brady for the first time in memory is not a good QB to pin your hopes on and PIT is a lousy matchup and then there's a bye.

Anyone think Eddie royal does something vs the redskins awful pass defense? I'm debating between him, mccluster, or streater as all 3 are on waivers. I have Charles and smith going already vs buffalo so mccluster would be a lot of eggs in one basket but it is vs the buffalo defense which is allowing lots of receivers a lot of points.

For a second week in a row I have high expectations for Drew Davis. 4 for 77 last week, played almost every snap, and they have an inept run game. Starting him with confidence again.

Time to cut bait on Edelman? I need a starter

Cut him for Dobson or D. Nelson? .5 ppr

I'd go Dobson.

Per Rotowire: Coach Mike Munchak indicated Wednesday that Shonn Greene's workload should be in the 15-carry range moving forward, if all goes well, the Tennessean's Jim Wyatt reports.

NFL.com Analysis: We'd like to see that happen before suggesting Greene as a fantasy lineup option, but following the Titans' bye, he's further removed from the knee injury that previously slowed him and given Chris Johnson's spotty production to date, we suspect Greene will see his share of touches going forward. As a result, he merits a speculative pickup by those looking for a backfield dart.

He's owned in about 25 percent of leagues.

Thanks for the write up. Having a hard time deciding between Ginn and Streater. I could see both guys having good games and I could also see both guys laying eggs. Would Streater be the play since he's "safer" considering the targets and D that he's facing?

Anyone think Eddie royal does something vs the redskins awful pass defense?

Indeed. Just picked him up as he has been on/off waivers more than a young Asian Hoo'wour. Maybe a move of desperation as the bye week and injuries have me vulnerable at WR this week, but I like the matchup v WAS

I agree. He produced well last week. The thing here is he's got a starting job the rest of the year with a fine QB to get him the ball and with waivers so thin (14 teams that go 22 deep) that's about all I can ask.

Same sort of thing with Jarrett Boykin. A fine QB who can make plays and needs to throw to somebody. Being in the right situation can get FF points just as well.

I agree. He seemed to be very involved in that game I watched this Sunday. If the matchups are right, he can be a stud.

Funny, I have Charles--(who's hair looks quite similar to McCluster's) and I thought that was Charles going off.

Nope, it was McCluster. He is sneaky.

I've cut bait on all Vikings pass catchers until I see some level of competence from their QB position. I'm not sure Freeman could pass the ball effectively against a college defense right now.

McCluster is intriguing. I hesitate only because he's fooled us before with a couple of productive games, only to vanish. But KC needs someone to take some of the offensive burden off of Charles. Bowe has been terrible and they don't really have anyone else of note. McCluster has stepped up two weeks in a row. Could be a developing trend for the rest of the season.

With Roddy on the shelf for likely another week and me having major bye week problems, i'm looking at someone to scoop and play. wright is gone in my league (he'd be my top choice), as is mccluster (would probably be listed somewhere in the middle of this group). so out of those listed here and a few others I've looked at i'm ranking them like this for my .5 ppr league:

Kerley, Stills, Streater, Davis, Royal/V.Brown, Lafell/Ginn, Simpson, Dobson, Cooper

Kerley feels like the safest play opportunity wise. may not get the td but he should be good for 4-6 catches. Likely the jets are playing from behind most of the game and the saints pass def has been deteriorating the past few weeks.

Stills is the obvious HR choice. With a lot of my better players on bye I may go with him to try and get the big week.

Streater has the best matchup of the group, I think he'll be solid but not great.

Davis has the obvious caveat that Roddy doesn't play. I think he'll have opportunities but Carolina has only given up 2 wr tds all year.

Royal and V.Brown likely cancel each other out picking up the slack after Gates and Allen. But Rivers will sling it a lot.

Simpson the matchup is good but the qb situation is a disaster. not really considering him.

Lafell/Ginn not sure there is enough opportunity here even with the decent matchup.

Dobson...with brady being off and the steelers shutdown pass def i'm looking elsewhere.

Cooper intriques me with how much foles likes him but theres better options.

Bess is the beneficiary of the idiots in Cleveland keeping Jordan Cameron in to block for the first 3 quarters of every game. Gawd I hate Norv Turner.
