Net worth declines 1/3rd for typical American household

Recommended Posts

Reagan changed the trajectory of the country. He was dealing with stagflation when he entered office and had the economy humming by the time he left. He also ended the Cold War. It's not all peaches and ice cream -the deficit did blow up- but overall he gets high marks. He saw what was wrong with the country and he provided an effective cure.

We were talking about trickle down ecomincs, as a whole. It also doesn't change the fact that unemployment went up after his tax cuts. I believe it didn't go back down until after he raised them back up.

Oh... yes, unemployment did go up at first. Can't disagree. But not for long. The overall trajectory for unemployment was down and down some more. The economy was booming in the '80s.

Then it went downhill under H.W. Why? The only thing he did was a modest tax increase to try to stave off staggering budget deficits. His only real mistake was to assume the people couldn't put up with deficits that would look like child's play by today's standards.

My point is the ol' Reagan plan was a mirage just like the rest of them. Seemed to work for a few years and then it was back to troubled times.

This has already been covered in this thread. An influx in cheap credit, did a lot to prop up the economy back then. He also moved towards deregulation and increased military spending. That has a lot more to do with with what got things moving than did his ecomincs policies.

Much like Clinton, he had a few lucky breaks.

You are free to believe whatever you want. That has no bearing on the facts of history.

How many fingers do you use when fingering your poo hole over Ronnie Reagan? Just curious

Gay fetishes, can't say I'm surprised by what you are interested in....

No. I'm saying what you believe isn't related to the facts.

He cut taxes, unemployment went up. He raised them and it went down. Those are facts.

I've never criticized H.W. for backing off his tax pledge, quite the opposite I thought he did the right thing to prioritize deficits. (I also thought he got Iraq exactly right -up until he decided to fock over the troops that fought there which p*ssed me off so much, I voted for Ross.)

My the only real criticism I have of Reagan is his deficits. Unlike modern Repugs, Reagan was always willing to negotiate and cut deals with Congressional Dems. If he could get 75% of what he wanted, he'd sign off.

No, they aren't. Educate yourself on when tax cuts were implemented, and the additional tax cuts of 1986.

So, in your mind Reagan never raised taxes?

Whenever Reagan raised taxes, it was in conjunction with a compromise he worked out with Dems to get something else. It was never his starting point. Also, for the grief Reagan gets for the deficit, this willingness to increase taxes showed that at least he was willing to address it. He was a pretty shrewd negotiator. Of course he had an effective counterpart in the House in Tip O'Neill and this was a time when compromises were possible since both parties had a large segment of non-ideologically pure retards in them.

Well said, I just figured this type of info was common knowledge. Reading through this thread makes it obvious that it isn't.

I'm barely old enough to remember Reagan and only do so well because I was one of the very few my age obsessed with politics when I was in High School. Even at that, his first term was largely a fog since I would have been only 13 when he was sworn in for re-election and wasn't paying attention. These people arguing are all younger than me and so it explains why they have no idea at all.

If you ask me about Carter, I could say he sucks, but couldn't explain it well. Other than the Iran hostages which I do remember, almost everything I know about him, I learned later. I figure that's how they are with Reagan.

It is common knowledge if you're even mildly interested in history. What irritates people who think freely is the absolute hero worship for Reagan for being a shrewd politician. In my mind, Clinton was as shrewd as Reagan, but somehow gets less credit. Both of them had good presidencies that were followed by problems created by their policies.

when I 1st started posting here (2003) my credit was like 540 and I had nothing in the bank and 10,000+ in debt.

When I saw the er of my ways and how wonderfully everyone else was living, I changed all that.

Now my credit is 800+ and I have 0 debt (sans auto), own a vacation property and home and have a 401k and a good chunk in savings.

Thank you geek club, thank you.

You mean trickle down doesn't work? Keep it up Wall Street, Banks and every other non productive member of our current economic system that continue to take and take. Some day the people of this country are going to wake up and realize it's not the poor that have been ripping them off the most.

Odd that MB was a blue dog Democrat who loved Clinton and thought Trump was a clown, but youve spent the past year fluffing Trump.

Its almost like you were playing a short term role to convince people you were a new poster, then lost the plot somewhere and decided to go full RP.
