TD Ryan2 316 Posted October 7, 2015 So, I'm a hacker... and I'm looking to buy some new irons. I play golf about 5 or 6 times a year - mostly in best-ball, charity tournaments. My current irons are Cobra knock-offs - they are fitted "long" b/c I'm 6'2. I'm not even really sure if I technically need "long" or "custom fit" clubs but b/c of it, I tend to hit my irons a bit longer than normal too (that and I swing too hard). Are there really any irons out there that can help hackers play better? And if so, can they be purchased for a reasonable price (under $500)? Help me pick out some new golf clubs! Sho Nuff 720 Posted October 7, 2015 Have any place you can hit some? Old Armour's hit well, but you may prefer a big get oversize like Adams with h bride, Taylor Made or Calloways. Calloway seem pretty easy and forgiving.
parrot 789 Posted October 7, 2015 I'm not an equipment guru TD, but I bought some TaylorMade Burner Plus "game improvement irons" a few years ago. Best move I've made in a while. Highly recommend them or whatever the current model might be for just ease of play. I think I paid $300 - $400 at Costco.
BunnysBastatrds 2,436 Posted October 7, 2015 Hackers I talk to that have gotten Adams clubs love them. They have a set that the three, four, five, and six iron are designed like rescue clubs. Very easy to hit. Taylor Made Burner irons are also easy to hit.
TD Ryan2 316 Posted October 7, 2015 Thanks - I look into both the Adams and Taylor Made Burners. $300-$400 sounds fantastic. Thoughts on "long" vs. "regular" clubs. How tall do you have to be before the off-the-shelf variety a no good? And Sho - I have a Calloway hybrid (4) that I love. I tee off with it and hit hit off the fairway. Only "wood" type club I've ever been able to hit off the grass without a tee. I never believed in "equipment" helping until I bought that club.
Patriotsfatboy1 1,432 Posted October 7, 2015 Game improvement irons for hackers are not overly expensive, help your game and are worth it. With your height, you might want to see about demo days or, now that it is toward the end of the season, getting fitted at a place as I am sure that they want to get rid of some inventory.

Please go to someone that is helpful before you purchase. They will utilize a lie angle board to help you find the right fit. The current clubs you have are likely fine, but they may need bent to your correct lie angle. If they are off even .5 degrees, a ball can miss right or left by 10 yards. That slice or pull may be caused by the club face, not your swing. It only takes a few minutes for someone to help you.
DankNuggs 305 Posted October 7, 2015 Its 99% swing and 1% club. I would spend the money on range time or lessons rather than clubs
Cruzer 1,995 Posted October 8, 2015 * Any cavity back from a big named reputable company in the biz will do. * TM Burners are a really good suggestion bcoz they have a heavy bottom sole, a thick top line and come with stronger lofts. * As always - the shaft is the most important part of any club. As big as you are and the fact you swing hard - Stiff sounds like a good fit... I'd make sure you stay away from Dynamic Golds. Those come with high bend points, you are going to want a shaft with a mid kick point. * If you have time to get fitted - great. If not, a little flour or baby powder will do the trick... Apply some to each iron before you hit it (at the range) - you will see where you made contact and this will tell you if you are ok, too upright or too flat. You can also tell by your divot pattern. * At your size, I'd prolly suggest midsized grips too.
parrot 789 Posted October 8, 2015 * TM Burners are a really good suggestion bcoz they have a heavy bottom sole, a thick top line and come with stronger lofts. The part that really surprised me when I got the new irons, not only did I hit them straighter, but I them higher AND farther. Of course my old irons I made out of a Golfsmith catalog 25 years ago so maybe it shouldn't have been real surprising.
