** Round 8 - 10 Commentary - August 10-Team PPR Mock **

Recommended Posts

Don't worry folks, the back end of the draft is here to speed things up.

On to Ben, he is the last available QB I put into the elite category. I was really considering waiting for a qb longer, but I want a piece of Ben this year somewhere. With the players left at running back and receiver, the level of safe picking is starting to decline. Why not take one of the top QBs?

love the Allen Hurns pick...

Thought he would make a great WR3 for me and pair well with Sanders and Cobb

What about Brees? I can't believe Brees lasted this long and I'm thrilled to have him. This just Locks in another position for me.

I am usually one of the last to take a QB but I just couldn't pass up Brees in the 7th especially when I have my starters at RB and WR.

As 2015 wore on, Brees seemed to relish having a tall target he could pepper with throws over the middle of the field in TE Ben Watson and I’m betting he’ll feel the same way about Coby Fleener. In fact, he had this to say about Fleener in a blurb from June:

(paraphrasing) “I was watching some tape on Fleener and felt that he had an uncanny ability to separate. He’s always open. There’s always a place to throw the ball where he can get it.”

Toons your 2nd on the dislike list and competing for 1st! You SWIPED Fleener just ahead of me.

I hope that makes you happy.

With Fleener swiped and tucked into the enemy's arsenal, The Spanker looked at the silver lining and decided to take Gordon who can do nothing but improve on his disappointing rookie season.

Melvin was reported with having micro-fracture knee surgery earlier in the year but reports of his recovery all show he is 100 percent.

All reports indicate the Chargers plan on giving their 1st round RB who they moved up in the draft to acquire, every opportunity to be the MAN. They have made moves to beef up their OL which was a disaster last year and acquired FB JJ. Watts little brother who played with Gordon in college to assist in getting the running game on track.
The Chargers want Melvin to take over and become the feature back. He is a accomplished pass-catcher as well.

I've also been hearing reports that he looks terrible in camp. Slower and lazy. Not sure if it's true but I didn't like hearing it.

So much hype about Fleener this year. The opportunity is real but is his talent level?

While I'm not thrilled with Fleener's points-per-game stats, nor his being prone to drop passes; I'm heartened by Drew's ability to elevate his receivers, several of which had career years last year..including Watson who had a lights-out year, considering his past.

You can pay me back as we head the other way next round. I think you've pinched me a couple of times already that way. :P

Again, QB's get snatched up right before me, but I didn't want to risk it anymore and took Rivers, who is not a bad consolation prize. I went TE early knowing full well the depth at QB in a 10-team league would give me options later, and if just one of the 4 taken before me fell it would have paid off even more.

Slow and Lazy?

Chargers coach Mike McCoy said Melvin Gordon (knee) looked fully healthy at minicamp.
"Melvin has worked extremely hard this offseason. If you had seen him do the conditioning part of the program, you would have never known he was injured," said McCoy. "Very pleased with where he’s at. I’m really looking forward to him having an outstanding year." Gordon has durability flags coming off microfracture surgery, but there’s post-hype appeal with his ADP in free fall. Jun 15 - 7:25 PM

Melvin Gordon (microfracture surgery) is expected to be 100 percent healthy for training camp.

For as serious as his operation was, Gordon's recovery appears to have gone as smoothly as possible. Speaking earlier this month, coach Mike McCoy said "you would have never known he was injured." Gordon struggled mightily as a rookie, but the Chargers will give him every opportunity to rebound.
Melvin Gordon says he feels more "comfortable" in his second training camp and has no limitations from his surgically repaired knee.
Philip Rivers agreed: "I just felt a more confident guy, a guy that felt a little more comfortable. That's key for a running back. You've got to be hungry and do all those things, but if you're antsy as a runner, you don't see things right." Added Gordon, "I feel comfortable with the playbook. I feel more comfortable with myself. I had a whole year pretty much to figure things out." Gordon's ADP has fallen far enough that he could prove a screaming value if he stays healthy and improves as a sophomore. He usually goes in rounds seven and eight in 12-team drafts. 8.09 QB Palmer

Stepped out of my comfort zone here, but Palmer has such value here. I did want Brady here....grrrrrr. And, as we all learned last year, QBs can get hurt too so with Luck & Palmer....think I am set at that position. Plus, it was my QB2 or a RB4 and I'll take the upside with a QB

9.02 RB Mathews, Eagles

I know there is injury concern, but IF he stays healthy he is their starting running back and to get that in the 9th round, I'll take it. I had 2-3 others I was thinking about, not sure this was the right choice but we will see.

Jennings would have been my next choice if I didn't take Mathews.

CMT: what do you like/dislike about Jennings? Like him better than Mathews?

Robb, the fact Palmer was your QB2 makes me feel sad. I was almost sure he would make it back to me.

Actually I had both ready to pick. Mathews seems more talented. I hear potential rumblings Peterson may not care for him.

Word out of NY is Jennings is the man. Coach Mac wants him as the man. He ended the year strong.

Both are great round 9 picks!

With the improvements JAC has seen to its DEF, there may be more running plays called this year. I wouldn't be surprised if Ivory gets more than 50% of the RB touches and with his tough running style, he'll be in line for some goal line work. The coaches may appreciate being able to rely on more of a mix of passing and running plays in the red zone.

Regarding a couple of the recent picks, Rivers was my originally planned QB target with Wilson as my second depending on how things flowed. Awkward to have such an outlook, obviously, with Wilson's ADP ahead of Rivers'; but I became uneasy as it seemed that everyone was wanting to wait on QB. I had to ask myself how many might be waiting on Rivers.

The buzz is growing that NYG will abandon its RBBC approach and focus on Rashad Jennings.

Boy am I glad that Mathews got taken before me. I would've been way to tempted to take him even though I don't need him. Instead I added to my WRs and grabbed a guy with a ton of upside. I think he can get anywhere from 700 to 1,100 yards this year. As my WR4 he's perfect and could possibly finish as a WR2.

Charles Sims is the pass-catching specialist working behind Dough Martin. He ranked #20 in ppr leagues last year and reports are the Bucs intend to increase his usage this year.

He offers solid flex value and if Martin goes down, he could vault up to 1RB status.

He reminds me of Gio but is going later in drafts.

I agree. They were both high on my board. I was looking to draft Jennings but again he was hijacked right in front of me.

I like it, he would have been my pick had Desean not been there.

While I still need to address TE and QB, Ameer Abdullah was value I couldn't pass up. I know people get fixated on the other RB's on that roster, but Abdullah is going to have all the opportunity in the world to be the lead back. As my RB4, I don't have to worry about if he can't put it together.

However, if he can break out...

Nice pick on Abdullah! He was the other RB I was considering and as your RB4, he will serve you well!!

Is Stewart going to be healthy all season? Probably not. I do like getting a starter this late though. I also liked the positive things he did last year. I was a little torn on where to go at this point. I thought about receiver but I wanted to grab a starter who was still available.

I actually really like J-Stew in best ball. He was top-10 in carries inside the 5 yard line. Dude has potential to put up some big weeks as a spot-starter.

I don't think Tate is as great as everyone believes. He was fine in ppr last year, but in non ppr, he wasn't very reliable. Enter Marvin Jones. A bigger receiver which is probably what Stafford prefers. If anything happens to Tate, Jones could really take off. I still think he is at worst a WR3, maybe a WR2. So as my WR4 in the 10th I am satiated.

Eli would have been the QB I targeted if I was going to wait longer. And I probably would have snatched him in this round.
