Their ability to play usually comes down to their pain tolerance, grade of the injury, and if some basic precautions are effective. Sometimes taping it to another toe helps or changing the support in their shoes. It can linger all season if they re-aggravate it, though. Grade 1 sprains usually don't require any time missed, Grade 2 maybe 1-2 weeks, and Grade 3 4-6 weeks. Usually a walking boot is recommended for grade 2 sprains meaning he could miss 1-2 weeks, but maybe they're being extra cautious with a grade 1 or the opposite with a grade 3. Only time will tell.
