She is from a district where the demographics have changed a lot over the last couple of decades, the voter turnout was poor, and she had a message that resonated.  Doesn't make it a good message and doesn't mean she'll be effective on a larger scale.

she won because the incumbent Crowley was an absentee rep ... believe he had residences in other states ... he was an old and tired product of the machine.  toppling him was really no great shakes, especially when the identity politics of old white guy vs. young Latina came to the fore.

If Cortez ever wins a Presidential election, her ability to do anything will only come in her first 2 years.  Why?  Because if she doesn't have the House and Senate, no bill she ever proposes will get the necessary votes.  There's no way on Earth that if she did have both branches of Congress when she wins her election, that she keeps them at her mid-term.  Obama lost both the House and Senate and the Dems loved him.  If she does have both the House and Senate at the start of her term, we just need to hope that the damage she does isn't so bad that it can't be fixed reasonably quickly.

Well I still have some faith in the constitution, and part of that faith rests in the fact that it is still pretty darn hard to change it.  So hopefully 35 stays right where it is.
