Strength loss at the gym

What age did you notice a loss in strength? Idk if it's because of age or something else, but I would say I lost close to 30% strength from last year. It started with bad tendonitis in my elbows. Once they got better and I could lift more again, the strength hasn't come back. Not even close really. This is at 35 years old.

That elbow thing, it really doesn't go away. Try to work around it and causes issues in other areas.

L-Citrulline also improved tolerance to severe-intensity exercise and increased the total amount of work completed in the exercise performance test.

I lifted from 15-mid 20s, quit and started again in my early 40s. I regained a lot of strength but never fully got back to my prime years. Ive been plateaued at the same strength / weight for years but dont care.

Relax! The worst is yet to come.

It sure is.

 

I'm still sore all over from skiing on Tuesday. It hurts to get out of bed.

45ish. I worked out really hard in my 20's and it lasted. Sports injuries eventually wore me down. I really need to start lifting hard again.

I lift 3 times a week on average now. It's been my average for a while. I do take time off here and there. Sometimes a month or two for work, sometimes just a week or two because. Every time I have ever taken time off before, I have bounced back to my previous strength level. Not this time

Sleeping at least 7 hours a night? Even at 35, depending on what life is throwing at you, you may need to slow things down a bit. You can still make awesome gains working out twice a week with a reliable program with logical progression built into it.

30% is pretty severe in a year. I'm lanky so in my 20s the most I ever max benched was 230; then I tore my pec trying to go higher and have hardly benched since, although I have on and off done dumbbell presses.. But... my current gym occasionally throws benches into the routine these days and I've gotten up to 200 max. Yeah yeah I'm worthless and weak, but the point is that over 25 years of not really working on them, I'm only 15% off my younger max.

 

Also your elbow tendinitis is Sarno from all of the shiot that went down with your ex-wife. YWIA. :thumbsup:

But theres some workouts I cant do or cant do heavy. Such as bench press with the barbell. It puts too much pressure on my shoulder. Dumbbell presses are fine but I still dont do heavy weight with it. Just enough to get a sweat going and muscles engaged

I haven't used a straight bar on bench in forever. It's pointless imo. It puts unnecessary pressure on the shoulder. I tore my rotator cuff because of it, and that was on my warmup set. Dumbbells are the way to go.

Yep. Precisely why I use dumbbells now. If I dont itll tear my shoulder up to the point I cant lift it.

I don't disagree with the concept of dumbbells over straight bar; not only a more natural motion but adds a stabilizer factor. :thumbsup:

I'm 44 and feel fine. Need a bit more warm up. But in all honesty I don't max anything anymore on purpose.... but wrapped off 225 15x last month... I guess its what your goals are. Power lift? Max rep? Nope... not worth it even caring anymore. I still feel strong, but thats not my focus anymore.

I already cut off the heavy lifting a while ago. I went from repping 105 lb dumbbells on incline to typically not going over 60. I would at least get 28 reps in. Now idk if I am getting over 20. I was doing 13 unassisted pull ups. Now I can't get past 8.

Planning a ski trip to Breckenridge. Where did you go? Where did you stay? Was it ski-in/out? Any suggestions on making a ski trip great?

I lifted too heavy in my late teens early 20s. An ego thing when I cared how much I could lift. My muscles were stronger than my tendons and joints. My issues started up in my shoulders. I can no longer lift heavy weight and bars arent even close to an option anymore. Only dumbbells for chest and shoulders.

I saw this change start in my early 30s when I would tweak something and have to do modified training while my body healed.

If you're over 40 .... seriously look at getting testosterone therapy, or testosterone therapy +1.

Howie and Frank Thomas...what they advertise....doesn't work. Not the same. Plain ol testosterone....putting back in your body what used to be there.....makes life better. Period.

Had to inject plenty of guys with it. When I asked them about it they send they feel a lot better after starting it. More energy, better attitude, etc.

Probably low testosterone levels

I dont think so. I feel more energetic than I ever have. I would be wearing down at the gym energy wise also, which I am not. I feel like I can keep going, it's just that my muscles are done

I drop off strength wise bigtime if I take off more than a month. Comes back after about 3 weeks. I'm 46. If I don't take time off I get real tired. Getting harder to stay motivated
