Slate - Help! Should I Tell My Brother I Found the $20,000 He Hid in a Teddy Bear’s Butt?

Q. I should come clean, right? I’m going to front-load this question, otherwise you’ll think my tone is unfair to my brother. For reasons known only to a 30-year-old man-child, he stored nearly 20 grand in $100 bills in an oversized teddy bear he won at a fair. (A small amount of it is old crumpled money, probably from when he was a teenager. The rest is bank-fresh money, probably from when he was going to divorce his wife, before they resolved their differences. So he was a tightfisted idiot on top of everything else. I would send it all to my sister-in-law, but she’s got a temper and I don’t need my brother sleeping on my couch.)

The reason I know about this is that Mom is moving to Portland with her new partner. My brother made promises to come and help pack things up and to claim anything he wants from the house, but he never followed through. In the end, Mom and I cleared out his old room, boxed up anything that looked important, and donated the rest. Luckily I was struck with an urge to be a jerk and hauled the teddy bear upstairs to be the star of a “Don’t you wish you’d come to help like you said?” photo shoot. I found the money.

I should tell him, right? He’s been quietly losing his entire cool as he tries to work out what we did with his childhood bear, without having to admit why. (The money is currently in the safe at my shop.) On the other hand, it’s $20,000 he stuffed up a bear’s bottom. He deserves a bit of panic over this, right? And for what it’s worth, I love my brother—but 20 grand in a bear! He’s a tit.

If i find a wallet or something I do everything to return it...but in the case of my brother, we have had some real issues with money over the years(pretty close to 15K in disputes).   I'm not sure I'd give it back to him.

Like you, I'm comparing this to my own siblings.  I would definitely give it back in secret so that the spouse never finds out.

The story seems odd though.  How do you not get the bear if you know your mom is moving?

We all give it to your mom. What would you do with the bear? :dunno:

I’d make my brother sweat about it for weeks, then discretely give it back.

Did the guy get a paper cut when he focked the bear in the ass?

I get along fine with my brother so I'd just give him the bear back and pretend I didn't stick my d1ck in it and found a wad of cash.  :dunno:

The more I think about this it would be funny if the brother took the bear around town, make it look like he's living large.  Take pictures of him at the casino, a nice hotel, the beach, car dealership etc etc.  Send the pics anonymously to the other brother.

Regardless if he showed up to help, at the end of the day - he's still my brother... And Gawd bless him, even if he's a jerk - he's going thru all kinds of hell and misery with a divorce.

I'd give it back to him, all of it.

I don't understand why this person would think he shouldn't tell his brother about the $.

I would tell him I took it to Goodwill with the rest of the stuff and that it was really weird how Goodwill called me the next day thanking me over and over for bringing it a bunch of crap.

One who is scanning headlines and see "Help! Should I Tell My Brother I Found the $20,000 He Hid in a Teddy Bear’s Butt?", which was pretty much already answered.   What geek would pass up posting that story is what I want to know?

With only knowing that small bit of info, I give it to him.  Other than being a bit of a punk, there's no evidence that the brother screwed anyone out of the money and apparently the one who found the money doesn't think the his brother was unfair to his future ex.  I'd think to most people, $20k is a pretty big deal.  No way do I not give the money to him unless there's a true legit reason.  I did not see one in the info provided.
