JustinCharge 2,397 Posted June 17, 2019 Back to the moon. A mission to Mars. Current timeline: December 11, 2017 - President Trump signed a directive to have NASA return to the moon and begin plans for a trip to Mars. "The directive I am signing today will refocus America's space program on human exploration and discovery." "It marks a first step in returning American astronauts to the Moon for the first time since 1972, for long-term exploration and use. This time, we will not only plant our flag and leave our footprints -- we will establish a foundation for an eventual mission to Mars, and perhaps someday, to many worlds beyond." March 26th, 2019 - Vice President Mike Pence announced that the timetable for the next Moon landing goal will be accelerated 4 years to 2024. May 14th, 2019 - The official name of the new program was revealed as the Artemis Program. Artemis was the twin sister of Apollo in Greek mythology. Upcoming events: July 2019: NASA launches a test version of the Orion capsule.

Let's get the FULL quote you left out: https://mobile.twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1137051097955102720 For all of the money we are spending, NASA should NOT be talking about going to the Moon - We did that 50 years ago. They should be focused on the much bigger things we are doing, including Mars (of which the Moon is a part), Defense and Science! So Trump actually says a manned Moon mission is part of a manned Mars mission. In other words, he's making a distinction between a manned Moon mission as endgame vs it being part of a larger jump to a manned Mars mission. But you chopped out the last part to make it look like he opposed to this. Fock off.

MTSkiBum 1,594 Posted June 18, 2019 The NASA administrator recently was quoted as advocating a crew-tended base on Mars (“pioneering”) extending indefinitely into the future. The overall total for pioneering Mars could easily grow beyond $2 trillion. Still, that program is not totally out of the question if we really, really want to do it. NASA’s annual budget would need to be increased gradually to about $54 billion (in 2015 dollars) per year for the first trip to Mars and to continue at that level to support one mission per three years. Yes, $54 billion appears high compared with the current 2016 budget request of $18 billion, but that is still less than 1.5 percent of the federal budget. Participation by international partners could help a great deal. This article is old, but seems to be optimistic. I think that a Mars mission is another waste of money and that we need to cut spending. https://spacenews.com/op-ed-mars-for-only-1-5-trillion/

wiffleball 4,638 Posted June 19, 2019 Trump says don't talk about going to the moon. Trump talks about going to the moon... "It marks a first step in returning American astronauts to the Moon for the first time since 1972, ..." Aides considered informing Trump that there are multiple moons in our solar system alone including Mars own moons. Upon further reflection, they think to themselves, " ah, screw it...' JustinCharge 2,397 Posted October 10, 2020 We are now about 1 year from the launch of Artemis 1. Q: Why do this: A: the long term goal is to prepare humanity and develop technology to send humans to Mars in the 2030s. Timeline: November 2021: Artemis 1 (unmanned flight) August 2023: Artemis 2 (first manned orbit of the moon since the Apollo program) October 2024: Artemis 3 (first manned lunar landing since the Apollo program) That will conclude Phase 1. Phase 2 will look to insert a permanent space station into lunar orbit. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artemis_program We got an update a couple weeks ago giving us a more detailed plan. Everyone sounds confident that the funding will be there and plans are certinaly moving forward as if they will get the funding.

JustinCharge 2,397 Posted April 17, 2021 https://www.foxbusiness.com/technology/musk-spacex-nasa-contract NASA chooses Elon Musk's SpaceX to build spaceship for America's return to the moon Agency says forthcoming lunar landing will prepare for exploration of Mars By Brittany De Lea | FOXBusiness | Friday, April 16th, 2021 NASA announced on Friday it has awarded a $2.9 billion contract to Elon Musk’s space exploration company SpaceX to build the craft intended to transport U.S. astronauts to the lunar surface for the first time in decades.
