Dems lost election to an American who doesn't want more free loaders bogging the good guys down, so they need more votes next time around. Fastest way to more votes, is more penniless focks who want free stuff.  
 

Adult libs remind me of 5th graders running for class president, who offer "free candy" and longer recess to those that vote for him/her.  That will sure pull in the other like minded 5th graders!  Works the same on penniless adults.

It is possible that Trump brought this on himself, one of his main agenda points was to build a wall and deal with immigration.

This is all what-if's and conjectures, but it is possible that if Trump did not make such a big deal about immigrants at the Mexican border than the media would not be concentrating on it as well.
