Is Antonio Brown a keeper this season?

Recommended Posts

Yes on paper it seems pretty cut and dry that he would be.  The latest mock I saw still has him going in the 2nd round.. but evaluating my particular situation I’ve been going back and forth on this.

I own him in a 10-team PPR league (we can keep up to 4) but I also have OBJ who I’m definitely keeping.  AB’s stats are projected to decrease and I don’t know if I fully trust Carr and the Raiders offense.  The AFC West will be tough, which could lead to problems with chemistry and in the locker room as we all know he’s not shy about about showing his frustrations.

Thoughts on this?  Would love to get other opinions.

Other options and keeper cost all factor in. Who you would be passing on to keep AB is the ultimate question. Whether that be another keeper or a valuable draft selection.

An ageing wr no longer in the land of milk and honey that is Pitt. I wouldn’t call AB a lock for any type of big season.

The only other player I’m keeping is OBJ (and potentially Brown).  My RB situation wasn’t good so there’s nobody worth considering at the position.

My apprehension is that since we can keep 4, there will be a bit less top end talent in the early rounds, so is it worth having 2 WR out of the gate and trusting him in the Raiders offense?  Also if I decide against it, he could still be there to draft if there’s nobody else I value more as best available.

 This.

your better bet.... (if trades are allowed) is to trade  him to someone for a player of reasonably equal value but without the risk.

I think he wont be able to duplicate what he did in Pittsburgh.   there is an old thread that outlines a long list of WR who had their best seasons of their careers playing with Rothlisberger at QB and who didnt do as well elsewhere.

only major exception was Emmanuel Sanders who performed better with Manning in Denver than he did in Pittsburgh.    considering Manning may be one of the all time greatest QB's of all time, that would make sense.

I'm betting hes still good, but no longer an elite WR1.

if you find someone who thinks he will be, you should make a deal with that person and rid yourself of having to make the decision.

I’d try and trade OBJ for a RB and keep Ab.  He’s going to be force fed the ball.

Like this move.

This may be one of the weakest reasons I've ever made to endorse a player, but that video of AB, alternating hands catching bricks kind of sold me. I'd keep him...

I don't know the price, if anything, for you to keep AB, but I would if you no other option. He's still a 2nd rounder and will be fed the ball.

I have a keeper league where we can only keep two. I'm keeping Zeke (please get a deal done) and have to choose between AB and Mixon. I still don't know.

with 4 keepers if others in the leauge hold on to at least 2 top talents chances are there isnt much upside to dropping him unledss you get a trade done.

but with decent rookie rbs and as we see every year a middle round rb seems to explode i would say hold both, you start with 2  top WR and hopefully score a good rookie rb

Appreciate all the feedback.  Evaluating all these factors is what makes this tough.  People say the Raiders will force feed AB the ball, sure that’s true and I agree, but they don’t really have any other weapons either, so defenses will be all over him.

On the other hand the Browns and OBJ have a lot more weapons now, so teams won’t be able to focus solely on him. That could open things up a lot more.  Remember they also get Hunt back after suspension.

The suggestion to trade Beckham for an RB was interesting though, I’m now considering it. Or simply to find someone who still values AB as elite.

He’s the WR8-9 imo. Below Obj, right there with Evans. Fantasypros rankings has it about right imo.

I'm more concerned about his foot/health than his absence with the team. I have a chance to get him in my dynasty league but is his foot going to be an issue?

They are one in the same, right? I doubt it's anything serious.

This guy needs baby foot. It’s like an Asian chemical soak you use that causes your whole foot to peel after 4 days or so, like a new foot underneath.

He pulled this crap in Pittsburgh and still ended up producing at an elite level because he and roethlisberger had it figured out (on the field) for years.

Should be building that new connection with Carr right now, but instead this crap.

I don’t take it as a great sign

Trade both WR’s for top tier RB’s. Find the Cleveland and Oakland fans in your league and make trades  with them.

I don't see Carr having the chemistry anywhere near to what AB had with Roth......Roth would throw the ball in spots without Antonio even looking, knowing he would be there.   Carr seemed reluctant to throw the deep ball last year.  I'm staying away from AB.

yes... and to expand...i know they are completely different players, but Amari was the suck in oakland and then suddenly great in dallas.

i don't trust oakland receivers, or carr, or whatever - and then you throw in AB's personal issues and - i'm passing unless he drops a good bit in a draft.  hell, if the season starts off wrong for him, will he quit and blow up?

Dudes feet are all kinds of messed up. Wouldn’t touch him with a 10 foot pole on draft day even if he’s playing week 1. Guys already a headache and he ain’t in Kansas anymore Toto.

Huge boost for Tyrrell Williams with the AB injury. He may be out quite a while.

You sure about that?

The San Diego Union Tribune's David Chao expects Antonio Brown (foot) to be ready "well before the regular season."

I literally just read that. I was going off of the frostbite from cryo therapy news, couples with an article about two basketball players in college who missed significant time from cryo frostbite to the feet. Then I read another article that said Brown doesn't actually have frostbite and that he should be back before the season starts.

Brown is running right now but he is just unable to make cuts.

AB is mad about his helmet and that’s why he’s not practicing. Or so the story goes these days.

I’m staying the he’ll away regardless. Well unless he falls a fair amount. Bad omens

You might want to check out what Fabiano just tweeted out about AB.  He's obsessed with his old helmet.

Conspiracy theory right now goes like this...AB saw a foot specialist who told him he won’t be able to play for months due to the cryo frostbite nonsense. This violates contract as its frivolous and not regulated by the team. AB is avoiding the raiders so he can gather his legal defense for when they come after his contract money. Justin Gatlin said he had same thing and couldn’t run for months. I’m very skeptical until I see AB back and ready to play.

yes - and the helmet thing is some sort of smoke screen.  TBH i'm not all that convinced he really wants to play any more

And now helmet gate with AB. Dude's gone loco.

From ESPN...

Wide receiver Antonio Brown has told the Oakland Raiders that unless he can wear his old helmet, he will not play football again, league sources told ESPN on Friday.

League sources told ESPN that Brown had a two-hour conference call with league officials on Friday in an attempt to argue why he should be allowed to wear his 10-year-old helmet.

Brown wants be allowed to wear the helmet he prefers, not one of the helmets that league rules mandate, league sources said. Brown believes the new certified helmet protrudes out and interferes with his vision as he tries to catch the football.

The Raiders have been sending Brown other approved helmets to wear but, at this time, he is not interested in wearing any of them. League sources also told ESPN that Brown's recent absence from Raiders training camp has more to do with his helmet than with his feet.

Good lord these blurbs. The other one says he’s annoying people by barely paying attention in team meetings and glued to his phone the whole time. This has a “Terrell Owens that one year he was deactivated from eagles just for being annoying” type of vibe.

Bumping him below TY Hilton for the time being and possibly off the board entirely, still two weeks til my draft.

From Fabiano's tweets- "Since joining the Raiders, Brown has frustrated his new bosses by showing up late to numerous meetings and by often appearing unfocused in them...  Brown, according to witnesses, typically glances at the screens of several tablets and his smart phone during meetings, distracting himself by engaging in activities which include perusing his bank accounts and "liking" photos on Instagram...  Still, according to one source, 'The meeting thing isn't that bad... but the feet, helmet, and going dark is an issue.'"
