Amtrak

Recommended Posts

Anyone ever had the misfortune of riding this sh!tshow?

So my parents booked two private rooms. Memphis to new orleans. Dad canceled theirs, but me and the wife went.

On the way down, there were track repairs, so they put us on a bus the whole focking way. Which sucked.

On the way back, we're on the train, which stops every ten focking feet. We've been sitting in bumfock MS for quite some time now. The focking train cars are 45 years old, and are pretty sh!tty.

No wonder these clowns can't turn a profit. Should have their subsidies pulled.

ETA : apparently the southbound amtrak hit a focking truck. They are taking the passengers off now. That's why we're stuck. Track is blocked. According to Google, this is at least the third wreck this year.

Used to take it from DC to NY. Now it's ridiculously expensive and not much faster than driving.

How long is Memphis to NO by train? I take it to NY or DC from Philly. Any longer and I’d just fly.

Faster? I’ve never seen one that is faster than driving. Thought about taking one to Miami since it would take us 8 hours to drive. But with Amtrak it would take 20 hours. New Orleans was even longer. Driving my wife’s car is both cheaper and faster.

I took a 20 min ride with my son a few years back to my aunt's. He loved it.

Up in North Carolina they do a train ride through the Smokey mountains during Halloween and turn the train into a haunted train. They also do the polar express during Christmas where you dress up in PJs, ride the train, have hot cocoa, and look at Christmas lights while riding. Really fun for kids

The train is nice, and there are upgraded sections where you essentially have your own cabin...

There is a cafe car where you can drink and hand out with movies playing, and they serve three meals a day in the dining car that are actually really good.

We tried it once when we were through driving to Orlando every year, now we just fly...

But if I have to go p to NYC I always take it, its a nice easy ride without the hassle of all that airport sh!t for just a one hour flight....

We did something similar here but it was a thomas the train themed event. It was really nice.

Some years ago we took it from LA to KC(3 days),the only cool thing about it was somewhere in New Mexico an old Indian guide got on and gave a talk/pointed out history and battlegrounds from the bar car.

We've taken it many times.... the Empire Builder... goes across the highline.  Portland to Minneapolis... pretty awesome scenery... relaxing.  Liked the cabin for sure but it can be spendy.

The city of new orleans actually.

Amtrak sucks. I'll never do it again.

We ended up at the station st 2am. Of course the station is not in a nice part of town. My family, who was scheduled to pick us up at 10:30, was long abed, so it was a $40 Uber home.

Today, dad's gone. At the casino all day I imagine. Brother and sister are busy. I never thought I'd say this, but I cant wait for the plane home on Tuesday. Not that China is home, but nowhere really feels that way anymore.

We had our own cabin. It was nice enough, but given the price, and how focking long it takes, I'd just as soon fly.

Correct. I thought about that later in the day. That song is almost as old as me- couldn’t remember the lyrics.

I went from Memphis to NOLA via train in the 80s. Nothing eventful happened, good or bad. But it seemed like it took forever.

They have a ski train that goes to Winter Park here.  It's great but it only runs every other weekend.
