titans&bucs&bearsohmy! 2,745 Posted August 16, 2019 Anyone ever had the misfortune of riding this sh!tshow? So my parents booked two private rooms. Memphis to new orleans. Dad canceled theirs, but me and the wife went. On the way down, there were track repairs, so they put us on a bus the whole focking way. Which sucked. On the way back, we're on the train, which stops every ten focking feet. We've been sitting in bumfock MS for quite some time now. The focking train cars are 45 years old, and are pretty sh!tty. No wonder these clowns can't turn a profit. Should have their subsidies pulled. ETA : apparently the southbound amtrak hit a focking truck. They are taking the passengers off now. That's why we're stuck. Track is blocked. According to Google, this is at least the third wreck this year.
RLLD 3,372 Posted August 16, 2019 Did the auto train a fews years back, on the way back it struck a pedestrian on the way back and the toilet started venting gases into the cabin, it was unpleasant/ I always use it when i go to New York
Djgb13 2,338 Posted August 16, 2019 I had thought about it but sh1t they take forever to get somewhere. I’d rather drive
TimmySmith 2,782 Posted August 17, 2019 Used to take it from DC to NY. Now it's ridiculously expensive and not much faster than driving.
MDC 5,805 Posted August 17, 2019 How long is Memphis to NO by train? I take it to NY or DC from Philly. Any longer and I’d just fly.

I’ve never seen one that is faster than driving. Thought about taking one to Miami since it would take us 8 hours to drive. But with Amtrak it would take 20 hours. New Orleans was even longer. Driving my wife’s car is both cheaper and faster.
kilroy69 986 Posted August 17, 2019 I took a 20 min ride with my son a few years back to my aunt's. He loved it.

Up in North Carolina they do a train ride through the Smokey mountains during Halloween and turn the train into a haunted train. They also do the polar express during Christmas where you dress up in PJs, ride the train, have hot cocoa, and look at Christmas lights while riding. Really fun for kids 1
JustinCharge 2,397 Posted August 17, 2019 Elon Musk just invented the tunnel so I'm sure Amtrak will become popular again soon.
RLLD 3,372 Posted August 17, 2019 The train is nice, and there are upgraded sections where you essentially have your own cabin... There is a cafe car where you can drink and hand out with movies playing, and they serve three meals a day in the dining car that are actually really good. We tried it once when we were through driving to Orlando every year, now we just fly... But if I have to go p to NYC I always take it, its a nice easy ride without the hassle of all that airport sh!t for just a one hour flight....

We ended up at the station st 2am. Of course the station is not in a nice part of town. My family, who was scheduled to pick us up at 10:30, was long abed, so it was a $40 Uber home. Today, dad's gone. At the casino all day I imagine. Brother and sister are busy. I never thought I'd say this, but I cant wait for the plane home on Tuesday. Not that China is home, but nowhere really feels that way anymore.

But it seemed like it took forever.
