What makes your league different/unique/etc?

Recommended Posts

Just curious, any unique rules or formats that make your league/s different/fun/challenging/etc?

I'm in in auction, which in itself is fun/different, with a salary cap during season for waivers too.  So its not about being ranked higher in waiver order for whatever method you use, you basically still have to submit high bid to get a player in a given week.

One of our league members is with a national restaurant chain (he actually could not participate this year, but he still gave us...) and so he basically gives out weekly gift cards for different scoring each week: Week 1 highest score, Week2 highest scoring RB tandem, Week3 lowest score of the week and so on.  Just adds a little fun to the league (as well as generating some side betting).

What about your league/s?

We have long yardage 40 plus and long td play bonus. 40 plus .Also a 10 point bonus for hitting 100 yards rushing.  It leads to high scoring games. Typically in the 200 but we had one guy have a perfect storm of a game and almost hit 300

Well it was unique until this year. CBS allowed us to add an extra bonus of fgs over 55 yards. 50 to 54 is 6 points. 55+ is 8 points. I would try to draft Tucker a little early when I could.

I think having a kicker is kind of pointless if there isnt an extra incentive to make the top guys somewhat valuable. People ripped me a little for taking Tucker too early last year. I still landed Conner in the 15th, so suck it

Oh and we are a 10 team, non ppr, rolling waiver, live draft type league. That all used to be the norm, now it's probably more unique. Hell we JUST added a flex a few years ago after just having two rb and two receivers as starters. I always want to adjust the league and there are a few guys who always protest any change.

We are limited to 10 free agent moves also. I really hate that one. Two guys refuse to allow that change and have threatened to walk over it. Wtf.

This league is now extinct, but it was the best dynasty league I had ever been in.  We all just got a little older and the league sort of drifted apart after so many years.  Anyway, we had a salary cap dynasty league, complete with contract for players, ranging from 1-5 years.  A portion of each salary was consider a 'signing bonus', so if you released a player after year 1 of a 3 year deal, you took a huge cap hit, reducing the money you had left to spend elsewhere.  The 'guaranteed/signing bonus' portion was 60%.  That kept people from backloading contracts and releasing players.  It worked well.  We could not only trade players, but trade cap dollars as well.  If you didn't have money to participate in the rookie draft, you could trade your picks, or trade a player for cash.  The scoring had bonuses for premium plays.  TD's over 40 yards received .5 points, but we had .5 extra points for runs resulting in a TD over 30 yards and a full bonus point for any TD over 60 yards.  It doesn't sound like much, but an extra point on top of the points you've already earned makes a difference sometimes.  It was the most realistic league I have ever been involved with.  Trying to get 12 owners today to agree on a set of rules is hard enough.  Trying to introduce a lifelike fantasy game is nearly impossible.  lol

Really? I'd hate that too.  What's the rationale with the two owners?

That sounds like an awesome league and really would capture the 'general manager' aspect of football.

Our drives me insane sometimes. Our defensive scoring is so far out of whack it's embarrassing. So Yahoo default gives points for points scored and the special things you do defensively like interceptions.

Well not only are we awarding points for that but also on yardage so sometimes defenses can score 30 points a game. We are also not a PPR league so if you get to a 100 points you are doing pretty well.

As the commissioner I've tried to explain how out of whack this is and I literally have gotten a response that "well defenses are not just one player they are an entire unit so they should be valued more." (Bangs head on desk)

We almost got it changed this year but the consensus was it made our league unique. No it makes our league looks stupid.

To reward those who draft well and don't make knee-jerk moves.

I thought about starting another league like this, but finding committed owners is difficult.  It was the best league, but because it was so much like the real thing, it took a lot more time than usual when considering trades or even making draft picks.  That's what made it so great.  Some owners want it all to be super easy though and don't like if they have to think.

32 teams. 16 teams in each conference have their own auction & player pool. Conference winners meet in week 16. Couple hundred trades per year (you have to in order to evolve your team with salary inflation & mandatory cutdowns). No contracts to have to track thank goodness. Almost 40 people (due to co-owners), high entry fee and low owner turnover.

And no weepaws or else the league would have become a ghosttown like the FFToday forums.

I'll never again play in a league with less than 14 owners.

I guess I get that to a degree, but man managing the WW is such a fun part of FF, I'd hate to limit it that much.  I wonder if the bidding for waivers would work...b/c you would be limited by the dollar amount, so it could translate to a few transactions or several depending on how you bid.  Anyway...

I am commish of a 12-man TD-only league with a live draft, that has been around since 1985, with 4 original members.....34th consecutive season this year.

Of course, we all play in several modern leagues too, but decided years ago that we were gonna keep our old dinosaur going, so that league Champions and records from the past would still have meaning....and because it is uniquely classic. That is one very challenging league, let me assure you.

10 team non ppr No playoffs-Straight record points

MUST DRAFT

QB-2

RB - 3

WR/TE - 4

K - 2

DST - 2

Flex -1

All rentals or pick ups cost $5.00 each and are put into the playoff pool

Re-draft for NFL playoffs in non serpentine order from last place to first.
In other words,  We get to enjoy FF from the beginning to the end of the super bowl.

Another cool thing is that with our smaller rosters and only a 10 teamer, there are tons of free agents to pick up or rent if needed.

What makes our league different?

Every draft day, we do a challenge to determine our draft order. It has to be fun and almost no skills required type of challenge. Our first year we did the paper airplane toss. Our 2nd year we did field goals, man that was funand really hard. I appreciate NFL kickers even more now. Last year we did the "blow the feather challenge" whoever blows the feather the longest without touching the ground wins top pick. We also did the blindfold free throw. Next year will be our 10th year and we're planning to do something crazy in vegas.

This year we did this. Baseball dizzy sports battle. Skip to 2:35

I play in a 12-team league that has a double outcome every week. It’s still head 2 head but each week you have 2 outcomes. 1 outcome being the game you play vs your opponent. The other outcome being where your points stack up against the rest of the league that week. Top 6 teams get a win and bottom 6 teams get a loss. So each week every team goes either 2-0, 1-1, or 0-2. I’ve noticed this format benefits the higher scoring teams in the long run and weeds out the teams that make the playoffs on luck based on matchups.

My friend plays in a league that randomizes the draft order every 2 rounds. So it’s snakes 1 way thru then 1 way back, then random order and repeat. Pretty interesting in my opinion.

We once had a guy who lost 20 consecutive fantasy matchups over the course of 3 years in a 12-team league.

Was he really that bad?

I'll let you decide.  The total points he scored in the league that year was just over 1,250.  The next highest place scored 1,514.  Almost every loss during the streak was over 20 points, and many were upwards of 50.  We nicknamed him the "Donut".

Good stuff all!

PurpleGold, that is hilarious and really a fun thing your league does!

Quick, I think you've referenced your league format before and another one that sounds challenging/immersive (and imagine a lot of fun).

Keep 'em coming but what about fun/funny things your league may do like PurpleGold? Or things that last place finisher has to do the next season/draft, like foot part of bill, buy a round, etc.

I will add another stubborn leaguemate item. We wanted to switch to fractional points, but same people who are vehemently against any change did not want it. I could not get a single reasonable response as to why.... Why not count every yard.......

thats fairly common....thats what i meant when I said "double W/L" league.....like mine...no playoffs either....but we do have designated position weeks where 1 plays 2 ...3 plays 4 and so on....ive actually won the league from the 3 spot in the last week

I just started playing in one 4 years ago and I’ve always wondered why I haven’t seen it more often.

its a much more fair way to play IMO.....really helps teams that score well stay in it....which i think is fair over having some random schedule selection decide alot

We have a 12 team standard scoring IDP dynasty league.  Each year we keep a starting lineup of: 1-QB, 2 RB, 2-WR, 1-Flex,1-LB,1-DL,1-DB, 1-K and also keep an extra bench player that can be any position.  RB and WR spots are capped at 4 maximum each on the roster (which makes the  tough balance of planning for the future and playing for the now).

Wow, that's kinda 'get your scores from the local paper' dark ages thinking for FF.

To be cheering for your RB  to get one more lousy yard in garbage time of a Monday night game is maddeningly awesome.

And you've never known heartbreak or elation as when you're on either end of a 98.3 to 98.8 matchup!

I was in a mock draft league once where only 4 owners showed up and the rest were on auto-pilot.

Which site do you use to play in this kind of settings? I assume they also have an app.

We just use CBS and the commissioner updates the double outcome every week on the league message board. The website only reflects the head to head.
