Santa Cruz Island** in Southern CA. I was uneasy for a second after reading the thread title because of knowing people hanging out in Santa Cruz (central coast, near Monterey) this weekend.

There are about 700 recreational boating fatalities per year. To put that in perspective, that’s about 10,000 less than the number of gun homicides per year and 700 more people than have ever been killed by a terror attack perpetrated by Muslim refugees on US soil.

How does a fire break out so quick that the captain and crew are the only ones to get off safely?  Is it not their JOB to make sure the people are alerted that the boats on....ya know.......focking fire?

I have no idea how the boat is layed out, but it sounds like the people were in an interior cabin sleeping. I cant image it was a situation where they could just jump off. Couple possibilities...

-smoke and CO killed them before they knew what happened

-no smoke detectors caused late action by all aboard

--catastrophic event like an explosion

-Egress from the sleeping cabin was very tight and panicking people blocked it or someone become incapacitated.  Kinda like Station Night Club fire.
