You Might Think Ric Ocasek is dead...

Recommended Posts

My best friends girlfriend, Candy-O, told me you might think he's moving in stereo, but he's not.

He's looked dead for at least a decade.

Since the 70s

Proof that no matter how ugly a man is, put him in a band and gets laid.

It's good to see someone that knows their music decades.

I've seen numerous responses across the internet referring to them as an 80's band.

They really were an 80's band even if they started in the 70's.

The best trivia question about them is what was their biggest hit? And who sung it?

My guess would be Drive and Benjamin Orr?

That's right. Probably tougher a week ago.

Another trivia question is what rat infested city is Ocasek from?

To be fair I've known that answer for some time,a lot of those 70's bands that went into the 80's had their biggest success thanks to MTV and IMO got away from some of their best music ever in the 70's.ZZ Top,Queen,REO Speedwagon,Styx etc.

The 80's was a pop era to be sure.  Rock was pretty much dead. Clapton put out the Phil Collins albums and got crap for them even thought I thought they were great.   Then, in the later 80's GnR became icons and Aerosmith put out great stuff.

IMO the commercialism was out of control,I don't blame those bands for jumping into it but a lot of the songs got worn out.My personal aggravation of this was ZZ Top's Eliminator if I never hear Legs,Sharp Dressed Man or Gimme All Your Lovin' again that's fine by me.I'm a huge ZZ Top fan but that album is the only one I don't own although I do own the best song on the album and one that was so much more like their 70's rock n blues roots.

That song was such a departure from their signature sound

Agreed. ZZ might have been the one band to go farthest off the rails during that era.

Add Bowie and Jagger, Billy Joel, Journey and Paul McCartney to the list of artists who went lame in the 80’s

I have to admit I'm a big fan of this 80's Bowie tune

It was.  They weren't much for ballads, but boy did ballads sell in the 80's.  Another 70's/80's band was Foreigner, and they hated ballads, but their 2 biggest songs ever were ballads. And they made millions off them.

Forgot all about Foreigner, you nailed that.Their debut album IMO is nearly perfect, one of those rare projects I can listen to start to finish.

Trivia I just learned.  Nirvana opened with "My Best Friends Girl" in the final concert.  I'll bet it was horrible.

Being more of a B-side fan I'd have to give this one a spot near the top,Ocasek is so good on it and I also like the keyboards.

That music video is how he ended up meeting Paulina Porizkova.

Saw them live in Aug 1978 when the first album came out. They warmed up Blackmore’s Rainbow on the Long Live Rock & Roll tour. Will never forget the raw guitar sound of a car engine revving up as they came out on stage that night. We were sitting in the middle of an old movie theater right behind the sound & light board.
