Saw a few interesting theories:

1. This impeachment was really just a Trojan horse to gain access to the Mueller grand jury testimony and Trump's taxes. 

The initial claims were all about bribery, quid pro quo, etc yet Trump was not charged for those alleged crimes. (Never mind that no evidence was actually presented, only third party heresay and testimony of opinions).

The charges evolved into obstruction and abuse of power because the Dems believe they can prove those with new evidence from Mueller and taxes (which have nothing to do with Ukraine).

Now they are just waiting on the courts to grant them access.

And worst case scenario, if they gain access and still fail to find any crimes or impeach then they have a treasure trove of opposition research to use against Trump to impact the 2020 election. (Irony much?)

Alternatively:

2. SCOTUS will biotch slap the Dems for bringing a political impeachment based on no evidence of high crimes and misdemeanors. Their efforts to gain access to Mueller's grand jury evidence and Trump's taxes will both be denied based on merit and relevance. The Chief Justice could dismiss the charges on the basis of the House not upholding the Constitution and abusing their powers.

 

In their efforts to override the will of the people (from attempts to bypass the electoral college, 25th amendment, FISA spying, special counsels, impeachment after impeachment attempt --this is the 3rd attempt voted on--, SCOTUS hearing tampering, defense budgets, states of emergency, government shutdowns, breaking client-attorney privilege and throwing them in prison, SWAT raids with CNN in tow of senior citizens accused of white collar crimes, using the courts to force a citizen to turn over tax records without basis, quid pro quo, children of the VP collecting millions from a former Russian nation... the Dems have brought obscure political maneuvering to the mainstream.
