If 99.9 percent of the population looks at a tree and calls it "tree". Then guess what, that's what the word means.  Some 0.01% of the population doesn't just get to change the meaning of the word because they want to.

Similarly if 99.9 percent of the population thinks that hand gesture means "okay" then guess what, that's what it means.  Who gives an F what some super super minority of people uses it for....if they even do.
