TBayXXXVII 2,114 Posted October 8, 2019 So I wasted a few minutes and checked the WNBA's website for the finals last year. According to the box score of game 3, there were just over 9k fans in attendance. I think that number was massively inflated. Why do I say that? Seattle swept Washington 3-0 in the finals and game 3 was in Washington. You'd think they'd try to pack that arena, no? Anyway, when you watch the highlights, you'll notice that the camera NEVER leaves the court level and you NEVER see anything higher than like 4 or 5 rows up. Unless you're trying to hide the actual attendance, why do that? For further evidence, I went to the box score of game 2, which was in Seattle. According the box score, there was just over 14k at that game. That one is believable because when watching the highlights, there were wide angle camera views, replays from different angles, and main camera view constantly zoomed in and out to show more of the crowd. That place was packed. Must have cost the team and league a lot of money to pay people to go the game. But anyway, I was still shocked to see that those 3 games totaled over 35k fans. I'd have thought they'd have gotten about half. Looks like half of the 12 teams had a drop in attendance this past season. League-wide, the average is about 6800 fans per game... which is driven by just 4 teams, Seattle, LA, Phoenix, and Minnesota, as they averaged about 9700. Attendance overall was down 3.5% from the year before. The year before, WAS the worst year in terms of attendance. Interesting... the 2017 season had the highest attendance since 2011 history due to (what they believe), was social media exposure. In 2018, league attendance was the lowest ever which was a 12% drop from 2017... and in 2019, it went down again another 3.5%. It seems like they got the exposure they wanted... then people saw it, then said "no thanks". They signed a deal with CBS prior to the season in which 40 games were televised and are claiming a 64% increase in viewership. Honestly, based on what I've seen the last few years, I'm thinking that number is inflated. Something for those of you who go to NBA games. The WNBA is closing in on a new CBA it seems. The players are claiming that they will sit out the 2020 season. The thing is, no one will notice that they're gone, so I think that's a bad strategy... but I digress. I read one article and saw a couple of video clips where NBA players are saying that the NBA should give more money to the WNBA. When someone asked the NBA Players Union rep if they'd be willing for that money to come out of the players share, the rep said that they'd negotiate that with the league. What does that tell you? It tells me that the players want the owners to pony up the money and that the players just want to look like they're helping.... but really don't actually want to help. If the owners do that, they'll get something else in return... but I don't know what. That said, if the owners are giving more money, you can expect one thing as a guarantee. Ticket prices will go up for NBA games specifically with the intent that the increase is going to the WNBA. That's on top of the increase that they're likely to go up anyway. The Observer 641 Posted October 8, 2019 I wouldn't go to a WNBA game if tickets were free. Basketball just isn't a sport that's entertaining to me when women play. Basketball is about extreme athleticism. Jumping. Blocked shots. Dunks. Women's basketball is slow and mainly jump shots. Just boring. Some women's sports are very enjoyable to me. Love women's soccer, dependent on importance, of course. Women's MMA is fun to watch also.

Eagle Bank Arena only holds 10,000, so 9,000+ for game 3 is legit... The Mystics play their games in an arena that has a capacity of 4,200... They used to play in the Verizon Center, so of course their attendance went down...

I don't really know anything about those... I'm just going by what I saw. Here's a link to the attendance numbers. League-wide, they're about at 82% capacity, which is good. I understand that if the teams drawn 10k+, that's great... but if the venue holds 25k, then the cost doesn't justify the means. It's probably better for the players if the team is spending substantially less money for a venue and filling it up than it would be to play in a bigger venue at half capacity.
