MIdway/The Irishman/Motherless Brooklyn

Recommended Posts

Finally some movies that aren't superhero nonsense or sing song crap. I will go see MIdway in the theatre next week while my kids see Frozen 2,  wait on the Irishman on Netflix at the end of the month  (it's 3:30, not sitting in a theatre that long) and wait on Motherless Brooklyn. Ed Norton is too woke for me to pay. Want to support MIdway as much as I can.  Maybe we can get more adult movies if it does decent . Can't just complain about the childish nonsense Hollywood offers and not support a decent movie when they finally make one.

Watched The King on Netflix last night, very solid. It's about Henry V. A little slow but, very well shot and acted.

Saw Motherless Brooklyn last night.  It was good to very good, not great.  Norton and Baldwin do both kill it.

I didn’t realize they made a movie off Motherless Brooklyn. Just finished reading the novel and it was excellent.

I thought it was a little overrated. It was decent but felt like it was missing something. Mainly character development. We’re just supposed to take them as we find them but it left the movie feeling hollow imo. However I agree it was well shot and generally well acted — not the actors’ fault their character.’s back stories weren’t fleshed out in the script

Agreed and  I would add Ford vs Ferrari to the list.

Just saw midway. It was good. Not great, but good.

Got the history pretty pretty tight. Action was great. Minimal annoying love stories. No Aerosmith theme song.

Hell of a lot better than pearl Harbor or Dunkirk.

Took me a while to recognize Mandy Moore. She looks. A lot different. Still hot though.

I thought Dunkirk was pretty good

I have a question for those who saw midway.

In the version I saw in the chinese theaters, there was a whole scene where Doolittle and his guys bailed out over China, and were sheltered by the chinese. The Japanese then burned and killed amok in retaliation. One Chinese guy gave an American some trinket, and later he kept looking at it sadly after the retaliation.

Was that in the US release? It wouldn't surprise me at all if that was slipped in here to appease chinese censors.

South Parks episode “Band in China” pretty much addressed this issue of American movies pandering to chinas censorship to appease them and “get some of that China money”

Yeah, that was great. Was just curious if it was in the version back home too.

So anyone watched the Irishman yet? Couple people I know watched it and said it was amazing but really focking long. 3 1/2 hours long. Don’t think a lot of your attention spans would make it through that

Will watch Irishman soon. It’s really long but I love gangster epics so it will be worth it. Getting great reviews and with that cast and Scorsese why wouldn’t it.

Spoiler alert:  There might be some   spoilers in my review of both films below:

F v F - 3.5 out of 5 stars.

More of an old fashioned action film.   No CGI so that scores big with me.   I left the theater wanting to drive fast.

I want to watch the Netflix doc 24 Hour War to see how close they stayed to reality, but it was a decent story

The biggest problem with this film is the over-acting and the over-dramatizing of certain events.  It made Damon, Bale, and others sort of unbelievable as real life characters.

My sons loved it, and I was mostly entertained so I guess that was good.

The Irishman

1.5 out of 5 stars

I’m a big fan of Scorsese, Deniro, Pesci, Pacino and even Ray Romano so I was really looking forward to this one.

Man, was I dissapointed.  I don’t know what happened here, but it just never got off the ground.   It was way too long and the story wasn’t told all that well.

First of all, these guys are way too old to play these characters and it shows. It shows badly in their faces, movements and mannerisms.  Simply put, they’ve lost it.  All of them.   It’s over.

The only guys that are actually entertaining as gangsters were the younger guys Maniscalso and Graham.   I’d rather see a gangster film that featured either or both of them instead of these geriatric bastards.   (Graham was actually pretty good as a young Capone in Boardwalk Empire).

Pacino was probably the worst as Hoffa. His acting chops now basically consist of him constantly yelling, and doing a bad impression of his Scent of a Woman character.   Very sad to see this happen.

In the end it feels like this was just a hastily made money grab designed so Netflix can say, “ hey look what we can do now”

I was slightly amused by the nod Pesci made to another character he played back in the early 90’s

Anyway, skip this piece of crap and spend 3.5 hours with your kids, your dog, or even your idiot brother-in-law.  You’ll have way more fun.

I have to say the Irishman was a bit of a letdown. It's good, if you remove your high expectations. I thought Pesce was the best of the three big names. But this isn't Goodfellas or Casino. Far from it. And I agree the younger guys were much better. And the whole set up with Sheerins daughter was a big nothing. If they were trying to say something then just say it. Don't believe the hype on this one. I knew it wasn't going to be all that great when my snowflake niece said it was great.  I like my mob movies to be a little funny and have some ethnic humor. They made some Jew references but that's it. No balls. You would think when you have a movie called the Irishman, about an Irishman, there would be some funny lines. Nope.

Right.  The dialogue was severely lacking

Also, did they even have a soundtrack?  Certainly nothing memorable.

In the still of the night is the only song that stands out.  Scorsese usually has a great one.

Also, Jim Norton has a scene where he portrays Don Rickels. Not a chuckle to be had. That's almost impossible, but this Vanilla production managed to pull it off. It's the most gutless movie MS has ever made.

Yes.  And another thing.

Kietel’s role was basically a cameo.  And not even a good one.

I forgot about him. They should take all the younger actors from this and make a good movie.

Probably need to find find someone other than Scorsese to direct as well.

Minor Spoiler:

Did you catch the inside throwback joke when Pesci tells Deniro he’s going to meet a fairy named Ferrie?

Pesci played David Ferrie in the movie JFK.   The homo with the bad toupe and weird eyebrows.

Yeah. I got that immediately. JFK is one of my favorite movies. I always tell people not to get wrapped up in if what Stone was pushing in that movie is true or not. The acting and the dialogue were great. All the cameos, especially John Candy and Kevin Bacon, made that movie .

Wished I read these before watching so my expectations wouldn't have been so high.Thankfully it was on Netflix as I paused this movie several times but always going back thinking surely it's going to get better. With this cast and director I'd even say a 1.5 rating is being generous as normally with movies like this there will be memorable scenes and/or soundtrack songs worthy of discussion. On a grading scale this one gets a big red F for Forgettable.

For the life of me, I can’t figure out how this thing was rated so high by critics and viewers.  It’s being called a masterpiece.

Rotten tomatoes Critic consenuss is 96  Viewers is 86    What are they watching?

Plastic surgery, botox and fillers alone was enough to make me NOT want to watch the Irishman. Those actors looked darn right scary in the face. What is up with Hollywood? I'd rather see wrinkles and sagging than the scary face mask these actors are walking around with.

I can't believe it's getting these great reviews. I guess when every other blockbuster is some goofy cartoon character movie it looks better in comparison
