Sen. Kamala Harris introduces new bill to make school days longer

Recommended Posts

Quote

WASHINGTON - U.S. Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) announced a new bill on Wednesday, the Family Friendly Schools Act, to make school days longer by a total of three hours.

The presidential candidate wants to start the school day by at least 8 a.m. and end it at 6 p.m. in order to, among other things, align with working parents’ schedules more sufficiently.

“My mother raised my sister and me while working demanding, long hours,” said Sen. Harris, in a press release. “So, I know firsthand that, for many working parents, juggling between school schedules and work schedules is a common cause of stress and financial hardship. But, this does not have to be the case.”

At this time, the majority of schools end at 3 p.m. on weekdays.

The idea behind the bill, according to the text, is to extend elementary school hours by three during weekdays and assign money for the implementation of programs in the summer when school is no longer in session to ease the burden on parents.

The legislation would also award five grants of up to $5 million total to school districts to alter elementary schools that specifically serve a large number of low-income families into “Family Friendly Schools.”

The amount of time teachers and staff have to work will not be increased through this bill, unless they choose to work additional hours and are compensated in turn, according to the release.

“My bill provides an innovative solution that will help reduce the burden of child care on working families," said Sen. Harris, in the release. "It is time we modernize the school schedule to better meet the needs of our students and their families.”

The full text of the bill is available below.

Three extra hours?!  And the liberal state takes yet more control of our children while expecting less of our parents.  :(

More working hours for teachers means we have to pay them more. Are we going to lay off some teachers or tax the citizens more?

Kamala is such a dumb kvnt. Get back in the kitchen wh0re.

The additional hours have nothing to do with education, because school is just another name for daycare.

Also, how does this work - "The amount of time teachers and staff have to work will not be increased through this bill, unless they choose to work additional hours and are compensated in turn, according to the release."

Kamala's mother could have saved herself the stress by having a couple of abortions.

Boy, Kamala really likes to portray  herself as a struggling minority kid growing up with the odds stacked against her. Instead of the child of privilege she actually was, with a scientist for a mother and a professor for a father. She came up the hard way.

Wow...she wants to make the whole teaching profession the equivalent of day care.  Besides all the glorified babysitter jokes...imagine trying to teach math to psychotic 13 year olds for 12 hours a day.  As if this generation wasnt dumb enough...first legalize weed...give federal day care for 12 hours a day.

Math is racist. I’m sure they will get rid of it.

Maybe the little lazy focks should join a team sport to cover the time between when school ends and when mommy is done working at Teavanna.

Beat me to it. She wants the teachers to clock in as teachers and clock out as baby sitters.

How about here's a solution. Don't have kids if you can't afford the cost and time of raising them.

It shouldn't cost much. And not for nothing, people without kids pay plenty for schools already.  They are the ones who should be getting a tax break.  And getting rid of illegals kids would save a lot.

I assume our district is pretty rare, but we already have an after school program here at the elementary that runs til 6pm.

It's not run by the teachers. A completely separate staff teaches kids different sports, arts, music, etc.  There are also some science and engineering workshops for them.

It was a great benefit to us when we first moved here.

Yeah, school district out here has something similar. I think at least one of the programs was run by the YMCA.

Isn't that the same thing as signing your kid up for more after school stuff like dance classes or some sports league or some other kind of activity? I guess the difference would be that you don't have to interact with your kid by picking them up and dropping them off because it is on the same premises?

And I don't imagine it's free to the parents.

Some property tax money, but it's primarily paid for by contributions from the charity fund established by the local Indian casino.  This little town got a sh!tload of concessions from them when they opened.  The % of slot profits dwindles every year, but the programs they put in place for the schools run for as long as the schools and casino exist.

The biggest benefit is actually the college fund.  Basically, each kid that graduates HS gets $25K to use toward college or trade school.  It's spread out over 5 years, so they get $5K per year.  I have 2 kids, so that's a $50K check to help them with college.

Year round residents with kids really reap the benefits because they can claim the homestead exemption on their property taxes while all the 2nd home owners pay a much higher rate.  Asa result, we get a very well funded school system with great teachers and a low student-teacher ratio.

See response above.

Certain sports like flag football and basketball are $15 for the season. That basically pays for their jersey.  Coaches are paid by the school system.  I've been coaching both for the last few years.

I think there is a better solution that does not involve leveraging the school system in this way....

Nice. And not many illegals I assume?

If that’s the case then they should pay teachers a babysitters salary. $15/hr per kid. Just 10 kids makes it $150/hr x 12 hours = 1800 for the day and 9000 for the week.

Michigan also has school of choice.  So the district takes in a certain number of kids from other districts every year.  Those kids aren't eligible for the college fund, but they do get a good education if they want it.

Here's one for ya.   A local HS sophomore and his 6th grade brother moved to the district last year.  They're both excellent basketball players and really nice kids.  Their parents couldn't afford to stay here in their section 8 apartment so the HS coach and a booster took the kids in so they could stay in the district.  In order to make it all legal, the parents had to rescind all their parental rights so the families that took them in could adopt them.

The parents haven't been heard from since.

That's a big variable.   Most school districts would be rolling in dough but for illegals.

Yes.

Mis-management and a lack of committed students and parents also play a big role in school failures.  The Governor here wants to shut down a nearby city's HS due to poor performance and mis-management.  No surprise that the city is overrun by ghetto culture.

Of course, she wants to distribute those kids to neighboring school districts.  Thankfully, ours is not an option for them because it doesn't take any state money.

The high school’s graduation rate was 66 percent in 2017 compared to 81 percent statewide. And among 2011-12 graduates, just 6 percent went on to earn an associate’s degree or higher six years after getting their Benton Harbor diploma. That’s one-sixth the state rate. Six in 10 Benton Harbor students are chronically absent, triple the state average.  The HS also is $18M in the red.

I read the bill---it's a grant for a 5 year test that allow local communities the opportunity to try and better serve the needs of the students and families . The hours do not seem to be mandatory, but would fund keeping the schools participating to stay open 3 more hours---basically like a supervised daycare with more structured activities.  But I do like the overreactions here at the GC.

A longer day wouldn't be bad, but three hours?  That is dumb...  If it was increased would the number of days in school decrease?  It sounds like it wouldn't be...

It would make more sense to have school be year around...

I don't think longer days are the answer. Let's not make their education more about the parents needing time to transport their little kids around. Let the parents work that out beforehand. If anything, maybe summer vacations are a little too long.

This isn't about longer SCHOOL DAYS.  It's about babysitting people's kids AFTER the school day ends.  My mother was a single mother so she dealt with all the challenges this bill is supposed to address.  My mom bought a house within walking distance of an elementary, middle, and high school.  She made arrangements for us to have a place to go after school until we were old enough to care for ourselves, and then we just went home after school.  Of course, a kid being home alone can be considered neglect in today's day and age so it would be a risk, but it's doable.  The government doesn't have to do EVERYTHING for people.  FFS.
