Officials want to clear a mile-long homeless camp on a Sonoma County bike trail. Some don't want to go

Recommended Posts

Ahhh... California. The trash and human waste state at work. What we need is full blown socialism damnit. Then the government will take care of all of us!! You'll see.

Quote

Pest control workers were using the spread as bait as they installed rat traps -- 340 of them -- throughout the mile-long homeless encampment after infrared video from a sheriff's helicopter revealed a major rodent infestation.

"I think it's sad and overwhelming," said pest control technician Matt Dougherty of the conditions for more than 200 homeless residents. "We're here just to make it better for them."

The rat problem could hardly have been a surprise. Trash and human waste had been piling up for months along the Joe Rodota Trail, nestled behind neighborhoods in the heart of Northern California wine country.

A popular biking spot, the trail is now the site of the largest homeless encampment in Sonoma County history. It's also a textbook outcome of the 16% surge last year in homelessness in California -- largely fueled by skyrocketing housing costs -- and the myriad problems that go along with it.

"It's an occupation. It's taken over our neighborhood," Stuart Kiehl, who has lived in Santa Rosa for 20 years, said of the trail encampment. "It means lower property values. There are people that are 40 feet away who have townhouses. Who would want to buy their house?"

I guess all the homes in California are $1M+, and if you can't afford that, you have to be homeless. :dunno:

Damn, rent just went up. The only option is out on a bike trail.

If we wiped every homeless person off the planet, would that reduce the gene pool of the people who are so lazy and listless that they would rather live on a rat infested bike trail than work hard?

Mentally ill and drug addicts. Why are they calling the shots? Get off the trail or go to jail. Pretty simple.

Unpossible. The Dems solved the housing crisis with laws that say every new development has to include a certain % of "affordable housing" (aka: that guy gets to pay substantially less than you did for the same house).

Here's an idea, if it's too expensive to live where you are, move somewhere else. :dunno:

ETA: These are simply members of our Bike Trail Communities. They got tired of the hustle and bustle of the Sidewalk Community and decided to move to the suburbs.

Here you go. Straight from the source:

Meantime, some of the encampment's residents simply don't want to go, in part because along with community antagonism has come compassion and a steady stream of drop-offs, including clothes and food.

"I love it. I put myself here," a 40-year-old known as Bicycle Dave said of his seven-month stay along the trail. "I don't live out here; I thrive out here. I have everything I need."

Get the fire hoses out. For the mentally ill, we probably should figure that out. Either get them some help or go One Flew Over the Cuckoos House on them. :dunno:

I think in these modern times we have the ability to build and operate safe facilities for the mentally ill. There is no need for them to be the horrible places they were in the past.

Yep, that's the standard M.O. in Seattle. Every bum is a heartbreaking story of someone forced to "experience homelessness" (can't even just call them homeless any more) strictly because of the lack of affordable housing.   The solution is to raise property taxes on folks that own apt buildings (to fund programs for the "crisis") and then act outraged and surprised when landlords raise rents by the same amount.

Oooh, and it's also Amazon's fault because of the influx of tech workers that can afford to pay rent.

They never ever admit the obvious that the vast majority are simply junkies and crazies that need to be in drug treatment or the looney bin.

There are very few loony bins left.

There are no easy fixes to the homeless problem. Most of them are mentally ill or addicts. Put them in jail and the state has to assuming the costs of all their medical and mental health along with housing, food, clothing etc. Let them roam free and they become a blight on whatever neighborhood they’re in. The out of control costs of housing and healthcare are definitely a factor along with the opioid crisis.

Housing costs are a big part of the problem. CA has so many regulations it has driven the costs up to the point people can’t afford them. These regulations also increase the amount of time it takes to build a house start to finish.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other peoples' money.

So the only options for housing in California is buying a house? Otherwise you have to be homeless?

The cost to rent is determined by the cost of the house and housing.

It's also a textbook outcome of the 16% surge last year in homelessness in California -- largely fueled by skyrocketing housing costs -

Republican presidents equal home sales and high prices. Democrats equal low sales and high rents. Obviously rental inventory in Cali is low.  Not that the homeless have any money to do anything.

So when more jobs were created, and you hear statements like the one below, you blame housing?

I have 3 brothers that live out there. All in different financial situations and in different parts of the state. They have been able to manage fine. None of them would you consider rich.

If someone buys a house that they can't afford if one single thing goes wrong in their life, like a lot of people around this country do, it's on them to pull themselves out of it.

exactly its really not that hard

find 3 people to live with in a 2 bed apt even in LA is only 500$ each

after a couple years, move 50 miles away and buy something affordable

Yep. It's called logical financial planning and knowing the difference between wants and needs.

It's called not buying before you are financially secure enough to overcome or simply handle "life events"

It's called not having kids until you know you can afford to raise them.

Etc...

Right. Landlords charge rent based on what they pay for the mortgage, property tax, insurance...etc.

And God forbid they turn a focking profit. I mean, how dare they?

Other examples of how Seattle City Council have attempted to "solve" the affordable living "crisis" is to pass laws that state that landlords MUST rent to the first qualified applicant as well as preventing landlords from inquiring about an applicants criminal history (yes even things like rape and assault).  Guess what happened?  Landlords juat raised rents and required credit scores to weed out the low lifes.   SHOCKING HOW THAT WORKS!  But, hey, at least SCC can pretend they're working on the problem.

Solutions are on the way:

On Wednesday, San Francisco opened its first “vehicle triage center,” a long-term parking lot geared for people living out of cars and recreational vehicles, which City Hall hopes will offer solutions for homeless residents who rely on vehicles as shelter but have trouble securing legal parking.
https://sf.curbed.com/2019/12/12/21012558/san-francisco-vehicle-triage-homeless-parking-geneva-balboa-park

the homeless have other ideas:

San Francisco’s homeless are running out of room in the city, so they’re gradually moving out onto the bay, constructing makeshift boats and barges and forming floating tent cities, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Between 100 and 200 “barges, sailboats, and other mostly decrepit vessels” now litter the landscape.

Untie the boats while they are sleeping and hope they float away with the current?

Well, it sorts itself out. If there's a house in California that you like but you are worried about skyrocketing housing costs, what you d pay a homeless guy $10/day and a bottle of malt liquor, give him a tent to sleep out front and ask him piss and sh*t on the front porch all the time.

Come back around in 3 months, see if the price is more reasonable then.
