Coronavirus - Doomsday

My daughter’s school just closed until April 20.  A 7 year old, 1 year old, my stay at home wife, and me working from home.  No sports to watch or bet on...

we are going to kill each other.

I'm seven or eight weeks in to that lifestyle. Nobody's dead yet and I'm catching up on movies I never got around to seeing.

I haven't worked in two months, the first month was scheduled that way. But since February 15th, I should have went back to work and haven't so that's been zero income and I can't say I've been enjoying mys time off.

I feel safe though. Like the worst is over. Everybody walks around with masks and, as of yesterday, there are now masks available on the shelves in stores in a variety of fashionable styles (not N95 masks.) My youngest daughter's school gave her a child-sized pink Minnie Mouse mask when we picked up the books for the quarantine TV lessons. I've tracked the number of active cases in this province down from well over 500 to 33 and it drops every day with no new cases cropping up provincewide in over a week (still stuck on 539, yay.) Locally, no new cases in closing in on four. And Sichuan's 33 is high end for southwest China. Nearby Yunnan has two active case and Guizhou and Chongqing, where I use to work, have only four and six respectively.

And when anyone does come down with the virus, the police are on it: "where have you been, who have you been in contact with."

They're cranking out masks and medicines and test kits.

Even the Hubei dumpster fire is seemingly contained but that's still a work in progress.... 13,171 existing cases out of 67,786 confirmed there.

It all still feels fragile though. We need all the schools and factories and restaurants and venues to re-open and have no new cases for a week or two after that to really feel confident that we're out of the mess. Meanwhile, it just takes one person sneaking out of Hubei across farms and forests and goat trails to start focking everything up again. Chances are he'll be wearing a mask though, so there's that.

8 weeks of being stuck at home?  In bumfock China?  Sorry, dude.

If you want to go outside for a rousing game of futbol, do they shoo you back inside?

What do you do for grocery shopping and stuff?

So my 8 year olds baseball team’s league that I help coach just canceled the season.   This is the over reaction I’m talking about. 1. It’s played outside 2. There is no air travel.  3. The only fans are normally parents or family members.  Complete over reaction.

I get a lot of this, the over abundance of precaution to mitigate risk and stop a spike of infection.

But a lot of this is crowd sourced panic.  It’s irritating me.

I honestly can’t figure out who I hate worse.  The “this is nothing, move along” crowd or the deer in headlights frozen in fear folks.

What I don't get is why people are buying TP instead of food.  I'd be going after the dry goods... Rice, noodles, beans.  Pick up some frozen foods and can goods.  Gatorade and Pedialyte would be high on the list.

I'm too cool to actually have done anything, but if I was going to do something, it wouldn't be go out and stock up on toilet paper.

Food and medication.  The true essentials.

My county, despite all the counties around them, are NOT canceling school.   Reasons cited:

1.  A statistical significant portion of people who would have to take care of children out of school while parents work are grandparents.  You know, those most at risk.

2.  What do healthcare workers do if their kids are out of school?  Not go to work?

3.  A ton of disadvantaged kids get their best or only meals a school.

Wake County, NC actually thought things through, looked at the science, and didn’t panic.  Kudos.

I respect your opinion to think that, but hopefully they cancel soon school and come up with a plan for the kids nurses. Other countries have managed that, US can too.

Now is the time that we need leadership, we should be feeding these kids through other programs.

China has gotten things under control in a month and a half. January 22nd was when things got serious and then maybe two weeks ago I think things got pretty much settled. I mean, we're still not out of it, but that's due to an abundance of caution. That's not to excuse the two months of fock ups and threatening doctors and ignoring the problem that led up to January 22nd, but since things blew up, they've done a good job. China has gone to extreme measures. other countries are having success too: Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore have also stepped up with methods that could be more reasonably done in the US.

Anyway, I think the US's January 22nd was yesterday. Things had to get to a point that it was bad enough that people would take it seriously. Now, everything's flipped and people are taking action. So, hopefully by the end of April things'll calm down and then May will start to come back together again.

All of China is stable, and the case loads are going down, especially outside of Hubei but even Hubei itself. Hubei is only getting like 3-4 new cases a day while, at the same time, people are recovering in great numbers; they're taking hundreds/thousands off the infected roles every day. The rest of China isn't getting any new cases at all.

I'm optomistic and expect things to return to normal pretty soon.

Not a bad idea at all:

Quote

During a press conference on Friday, Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) criticized the federal government’s response to the coronavirus and the “inconsistent” messaging from the federal government. She called on President Trump “to step back and appoint one of our public health officials to be the spokesman” and suggested Dr. Anthony Fauci serve as the spokesperson and give daily briefings on the virus.

Collins said, “We are making progress at the federal level, but I am not satisfied with the response. I think that the messaging at the federal level has been inconsistent. And when you’re dealing with a novel virus like this, it’s very important that health professionals be out front, and that there be a consistent message. We also, in some parts of the country, are experiencing shortages of tests.”

She added, “I would like the president to step back and appoint one of our public health officials to be the spokesman as we go through dealing with this novel virus. My suggestion would be that Dr. Anthony Fauci, who has been around for decades, is such a well-regarded infectious disease specialist, has dealt with everything from AIDS to the Zika virus and H1N1 flu be the public face for the federal government. I believe he should give a briefing at the same time each day to update the American people and to also make sure that the messaging is consistent.”

I couldn’t imagine eating rice and beans for a month.  We’re not in a famine.

Why not get get steak, chicken and good stuff you’d normally eat since you were stocking up?

Oh we went out and bought $450 of groceries last night.  Much less crazy than the warehouse stores... but still had this "law of rhe jungle" feeling.

The other stuff is my "shiz goes down food".  Not just this... but we're in a good earthquake zone as well.

Mmmmmrs...beer has lived through several hurricanes in Puerto Rico growing up and doesn't fock around when it comes to preparedness.  Has seen guns pulled for a jug of water growing up.

The whole season?  Damn.  We haven't even started practicing outside yet.  We did some indoor stuff on Sundays at the High School thru Feb, but we never start official practices until after Spring Break (April 13 for us) anyway.

Now is the time that we need leadership, we should be feeding these kids through other programs.

Our schools are now closed until April 13.  Kids can still pick up meals 3 days/week at the cafeteria entrance.  They get 2 days worth of breakfast and lunch at each pick up.  That goes into effect Monday.

There's a provision in the aid package that just passed that allows employees to take a leave to provide child care when their school is closed.   This doesn't address the needs of health care workers, but it covers the average working parent a little.

People who are sick with the virus and have to be treated or quarantined would qualify for the sick pay benefit, which requires employers to offer 14 days of sick leave at "not less" than two-thirds of an employee's normal pay. Others who would qualify for paid sick leave are those who need to be home to care for a child whose school or childcare center has closed, and those who need to leave their jobs to take care of a family member infected with the virus.

KSB's school should rethink their decision.    Seriously, man.  Your community made a knee-jerk decision on youth baseball, but still wants kids in class every day?  What are they thinking?

People are stupid, now is the time to be avoiding crowds. There are going to be a huge spike in cases because people are stockpiling food to prevent the huge spike in cases.

Where is the leadership in this country.
