Prolly tough to get now but this would be a good thing to have in your emergency preparedness supplies for next time.  It looks like the regular price on Amazon was about $19 before this all went down so not a bad investment.  Another one to add is a no-touch thermometer.

Everything has eased up, mask discipline in a joke now as we're down to 30% of people wearing them, and pretty much every place is back to being open again. Is it different in Shenzhen?

I'm glad they banned foreigner entry, that's where all the new cases have been coming from for over a week.

Might want to slow your roll....

Oh I fully agree everyone thinks it's over.

And no, volty, it wasn't foreigners. Only 10% of new cases coming in were foreigners, the rest was chinese returning, and they are still allowed.

The numbers have been bullish!t from the very beginning.

Just look at this article... The chinese government reported 3000 deaths... Which compared to the numbers seen in Italy and Spain, and factoring in things like Healthcare, was absurd. Now 45,000 people are lined up in Wuhan to pick up ashes...

AsiaNews.it

Wuhan, endless queues for ashes of coronavirus dead cast doubts on numbers

by Lu Haitao

During the epidemic, the dead were cremated immediately, without ceremonies and without specifying the cause of death. Now family members are waiting to bury the urns containing the ashes of their loved ones. About 45,000 urnes will be distributed in Wuhan alone. The number of coronavirus deaths in China is deliberately underestimated. In the days of the peak of the epidemic, the crematory ovens worked for 19 hours a day. Journalists Li Zehua, Fang Bin, Chen Qiushi have disappeared. Photos and videos of queues at Funeral Parlors and cemeteries are blocked on social media.

Wuhan (AsiaNews) - Hundreds, perhaps thousands of people are queuing in front of Funeral Parlors in Wuhan to collect the urns with the ashes of their deceased who died in the coronavirus epidemic during city’s forced isolation.

All those who died during the epidemic were immediately cremated, without any funeral ceremony and without specifying the causes of death. Family members had to wait for the authorities' notice to retrieve the ashes of their loved ones.

On the brink of a profound economic crisis, China is pushing to restore normalcy to the country, and has scheduled the reopening of communications in Wuhan on April 8. A sign of this "normality" is the collection of urns by relatives in preparation for the feast of Qingming, on April 4th, when the tombs of the deceased are honored.

The queues and the dead

The long queues in front of the Funeral Parlors provoke the question of how many coronavirus deaths there really were. So far China has only reported 3298 deaths.

A photo released yesterday on social media (see photo) shows a long line outside the Funeral Parlor in Hankow, a district of Wuhan. Online comments say that people have had to wait for hours while public security and plainclothes policemen were watching that no one took photos. To take the ashes of their deceased, family members had to be escorted by Funeral Parlor staff members or city officials. The comments speak of "a form of surveillance".

Caixin magazine notes that the queue outside Hankow's Funeral Parlor was approximately 200 meters long; thousands of empty urns were unloaded from a truck and stacked in the Funeral Parlor.

Another "funeral hall" in Wuchang (another Wuhan neighborhood) has announced that family members can come to collect the urns with ashes from 23 March. The Funeral Parlor plans to distribute 500 per day, up to Qingming. This means around 6500 urns throughout this period.

Wuhan has seven Funeral Parlors: if it is calculated that each of them will distribute urns at the same rate as the one in Wuchang, it adds up to an estimated 45,500 urns for the city of Wuhan alone.

Perhaps not all of these deaths can be attributed to coronavirus, but it is almost certain that the official figures are purposely underestimated.

A Caixin reporter said earlier that the Funeral Parlor cremation ovens worked for 19 hours a day in February.

Li Zehua, a former CCTV television presenter who came to Wuhan as a freelancer to report on the epidemic, has been arrested and there has been no news of his whereabouts for over a month. Two other journalists have disappeared, Fang Bin and Chen Qiushi: they too were working in Wuhan. Li Zehua reported his visit to the Funeral Parlor in Qingshan between 10 and 11 p.m. on February 19 when the crematoria were still in operation.

Videos also appeared online showing long queues of people outside the Biandanshan cemetery, waiting to bury the ashes of their deceased. But even these photos and videos have been censored and taken down.

In all likelihood the exact number of coronavirus victims will never be known. During the days of the peak of the Wuhan epidemic, the health system collapsed and many patients did not have the opportunity to be hospitalized. They died before any diagnosis and were cremated without being included in official statistics.

^yikes. But not surprising. Back in January, a Chinese journalist for Buzzfeed started translating the daily updates from China, and it was noticed that they were growing at fixed percentages. Like 2.8% more deaths than the last day, new day...2.8% more and so on, across a few categories.

My bro emailed this to me

* The virus is not a living organism, but a protein molecule (DNA) covered by a protective layer of lipid (fat), which, when absorbed by the cells of the ocular, nasal or buccal mucosa, changes their genetic code. (mutation) and convert them into aggressor and multiplier cells.
* Since the virus is not a living organism but a protein molecule, it is not killed, but decays on its own. The disintegration time depends on the temperature, humidity and type of material where it lies.
* The virus is very fragile; the only thing that protects it is a thin outer layer of fat. That is why any soap or detergent is the best remedy, because the foam CUTS the FAT (that is why you have to rub so much: for 20 seconds or more, to make a lot of foam).
By dissolving the fat layer, the protein molecule disperses and breaks down on its own.
* HEAT melts fat; this is why it is so good to use water above 77 degrees Fahrenheit for washing hands, clothes and everything. In addition, hot water makes more foam and that makes it even more useful.
* Alcohol or any mixture with alcohol over 65% DISSOLVES ANY FAT, especially the external lipid layer of the virus.
* Any mix with 1 part bleach and 5 parts water directly dissolves the protein, breaks it down from the inside.
* Oxygenated water helps long after soap, alcohol and chlorine, because peroxide dissolves the virus protein, but you have to use it pure and it hurts your skin.
* NO BACTERICIDE OR ANTIBIOTIC SERVES. The virus is not a living organism like bacteria; antibodies cannot kill what is not alive.
* NEVER shake used or unused clothing, sheets or cloth. While it is glued to a porous surface, it is very inert and disintegrates only
-between 3 hours (fabric and porous),
-4 hours (copper and wood)
-24 hours (cardboard),
- 42 hours (metal) and
-72 hours (plastic).
But if you shake it or use a feather duster, the virus molecules float in the air for up to 3 hours, and can lodge in your nose.
* The virus molecules remain very stable in external cold, or artificial as air conditioners in houses and cars.
They also need moisture to stay stable, and especially darkness. Therefore, dehumidified, dry, warm and bright environments will degrade it faster.
* UV LIGHT on any object that may contain it breaks down the virus protein. For example, to disinfect and reuse a mask is perfect. Be careful, it also breaks down collagen (which is protein) in the skin.
* The virus CANNOT go through healthy skin.
* Vinegar is NOT useful because it does not break down the protective layer of fat.
* NO SPIRITS, NOR VODKA, serve. The strongest vodka is 40% alcohol, and you need 65%.
* LISTERINE IF IT SERVES! It is 65% alcohol.
* The more confined the space, the more concentration of the virus there can be. The more open or naturally ventilated, the less.
* You have to wash your hands before and after touching mucosa, food, locks, knobs, switches, remote control, cell phone, watches, computers, desks, TV, etc. And when using the bathroom.
* You have to Moisturize dry hands from so much washing them, because the molecules can hide in the micro cracks. The thicker the moisturizer, the better.
* Also keep your NAILS SHORT so that the virus does not hide there.

Looks like 2,500 urns to me assuming each box represents 1 urn.

I'm not saying the numbers are BS but the picture seems to match the 2,500 number.

We have signs up and a line taped on the floor for keeping distance from our parts counter.  We still have way too many customers coming in and they don't seem to care.  This is frustrating.  You'd think this was just a normal day.

My wife has started making masks out of leftover quilting fabric and we've decided to wear them when we need to go out, in part to start the process of socializing them.  Yesterday I went to an Ace and it was like nothing was going on.  Old, young, didn't matter, people walking around close to each other with no masks, handing stuff to the cashier, etc.  One person saw me and said "whoa."  After that I went to the pool supply store; the cashier saw me and asked if I was wearing it because I am sick.  No maam, I'm wearing it to not get sick.

If everyone wore something like these, we'd be done with this shiot in a few weeks.  Also I expect the mask suggestion/request/order to come down by next week.  Long overdue IMO.

It would be great if people took it seriously.  My customer base is not the type to wear masks or anything like that.  They can be very stubborn.

I ordered 10 x 25 3.5 mil plastic sheeting and some furring strips from HD.  I haven't picked it up yet but I'm thinking of installing some sort of sneeze/cough shield at the register.  Connect it to the ceiling and protect us all from each other as best I can.  It might look kinda hillbilly but I think it would be relatively effective.  It's impossible for me to make ppl stand 6 ft away and pay.

Just curious if this was a serious answer or one just to highlight that people should be taking this seriously.  Because there is no scientific evidence that wearing a mask will keep a virus OUT.  It will help isolate the virus coming out of your mouth but not the other way around.  And it's important that people know this so they don't horde medical masks thinking it can prevent them from getting sick.

We went shopping today.  Grocery store - did our typical shopping.  No TP but we aren't running short yet.  Still would like to get a little more, not to horde, but just to be sure we have enough.  Much less crowded than the last time we went a couple weeks ago which was nice.   Went to Costco expecting it to be a madhouse but surprisingly it wasn't crowded at all.  Got a nice parking spot near the front door.  They had TP.  Got a 30 roll package that leaves us well stocked.  They had an employee limiting you to one package, which was fine.  Between the grocery store and Costco we're set for the next month at least.

Oh, and Costco was selling cases of Corona so I bought one to support a company that has been impacted by this thing solely due to their name.

So, have reasonable people all come to the conclusion that wholesale testing would be a tremendous waste of time under these conditions. Not that I blame the Governors. The financial implications of a total shutdown are dire.

I googled it.  Seems some are all over the place but for the most part they're just speculating and taking a "can't hurt" attitude.  The ONLY sound reasoning is that there are carriers without symptoms and this will prevent those people from spreading the disease.  Unless Jerry thinks he has the coronavirus that wouldn't help him.  My bigger concern is that health care professionals need them and we don't need people hording them so that health care professionals can't get them.  Jerry made his own so that's not a factor here.  If he wants to wear it he's not hurting anyone and I have no issue with it.  I was just curious if he actually thought there was a health benefit.

5 hour old article I found on this topic:

Food for thought for the simplistic mind.  Are you saying there aren't other variables that come in to play between these countries, such as how much testing they're doing, how much quarantining they're doing, etc....?  I don't want to keep ragging on you NaomiChronicHusker but all you're doing around here lately is spreading misinformation.  If you really care about this issue please stop or only post reputable articles.

Both of these organizations aren't shining examples of being on the ball right now. And apparently the CDC is about to steer an amended course there.

It was really obvious once there was a decision from the top to tell the American people to not bother wearing masks. There was a media blitz (relative to how the topic would normally register) about it in a matter of days -  one article or broadcast segment after another got devoted to it.

The motivation was critical frontline shortages, but they weren't saying that at all, at that time. Some people knew though.

And that obviously matters. But instead of the message being 'it's critical HCW's have as much access to masks as possible' it was, 'they won't do anything to protect you.'  They didn't trust people to care enough about the real concern, I guess.

Short of N95 and above filtration, assuming the mask is secured to your face properly, other masks most likely just offer some extra protection. Better than nothing, and helps with not touching your face.

Probably. I honestly thought it was irresponsible to say masks can't help from the start. However there is no question that hand sanitation and gloves is a far better deterrent.

I have 2 unopened boxes of nitrile exam gloves.  What good do they do though?  The virus doesn't go through the skin.  I am keeping my hands washed between customers with either soap and water or hand sanitizer and not touching my face.  Maybe I'm ignorant but I don't see what good the gloves do.

Most of the tweets in that thread were from people with more expertise than the average person, who are also collating information from others with expertise. There's a laundry list of stuff mentioned in the real time social media ether from different professionals that have been insightful, ahead of journalism and the nation's bureaucratic info flow. Many are people whom the latter group will seek out for context. The tweet I posted above was posted by...

"Science magazine reporter. Interested in infectious diseases, immunology, vaccines, public health, genomics, CRISPR, primates, surfing."

And he was prefacing, quite clearly in his tweet, that "masks [if they're making a big difference] wouldn't be the only difference." Let's think about this data.

Not declaring anything.

If you think I post to seem smart, then every post of mine would be filtered from the lens of "I'm here to school people." Absolutely not my spirit and not the case.

I'm actually trying to be constructive in a food for thought type of way, and it should be taken as such. I'll quit posting though if it's NOT constructive, whether for weird message board dynamic reasons (there's always a myriad of weird tensions here), or if it's just not constructive.

Serious.  You are a smart guy; why would a mask help one way but not the other?  Why do they help health care workers but not the rest of us?  If you sprayed a water bottle on one side of a mask (like say a cough or sneeze), would it all pass through the mask?  Would any of it?  Well, maybe a few viruses get thru, but nothing like if you were unmasked.  And as naomi pointed out, it prevents you from touching your face.

It isn't the only precaution I am taking, but it is an important one IMO.

Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good.
