Bernie Sanders defends Fidel Castro's socialist Cuba: 'Unfair to simply say everything is bad'

Sen. Bernie Sanders, the frontrunner for the Democrats' presidential nomination, doubled down on his support for some of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro's policies, saying in an interview that aired Sunday, "it's unfair to simply say everything is bad."

Speaking to CBS News' "60 Minutes," Sanders, a self-proclaimed democratic socialist, pointed to social welfare programs introduced under Castro's regime that he described as redeeming, despite the communist dictator's often repressive human-rights violations against Cubans.

"We're very opposed to the authoritarian nature of Cuba but you know, it's unfair to simply say everything is bad. You know? When Fidel Castro came into office, you know what he did? He had a massive literacy program. Is that a bad thing? Even though Fidel Castro did it?" Sanders told Anderson Cooper.

Fidel Castro relinquished power to his brother, Raúl, in 2011 after nearly half a century in charge of the island nation; Fidel died in 2016.

Some Republicans jumped on Sanders' comments. "It really makes a difference when those you murder at the firing squad can read & write," Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, tweeted.

In a resurfaced speech given at the University of Vermont in 1986, Sanders praised the socialist policies implemented in Cuba by the Castro regime and criticized bipartisan efforts in the U.S. to tamp down on Castro's spread of communism.

Well we knew he wasn't gonna win Florida.  And Ohio and Wisconsin will also be in Trump's camp if he runs against Bernie.  That's all Trump needs to beat him.

Did he say, "Ya know, sometimes American journalists talk about how it's a bad thing that people in other countries have to line up for food."

"That's a good thing [lining up for food]. In other countries the poor don't get the food, the rich get the food. And the poor starve to death."

Holy crap. How the hell do people vote for this turd? How is his not just old 1970's trivia at this point?

I bet if Castro was alive today, Bernie would want secret meetings with no record whatsoever what they discussed.

LOL.  So he's saying that the rich people are lining up for food too?   Bwahahahahahaha.  Either he's an idiot or he thinks everyone else is... or both.

Seriously. If Bernie was El Presidente of the US, and bread lines were the only place Americans could get their rationed out food, would you run into Bernie in any of those lines at any time? What a tool. Still can't figure out how this guy is running on a socialist platform and actually having some success. That dude serious needs some health problems to make him pull out of the race. Same for all his supporters.

If Bernie had a problem with a single angry BLM lady kicking him off the stage in Seattle back in 2016 then I'm sure he'll have no issues with Cuban Americans in FL.

He backed several anti capitalist regimes with endless strings of human rights violations.  Don't let the fact that they were avowed enemies of the US bother you either.  They did good things.

I hope Sanders changes his ways and becomes tough on murderous regimes like Trump is with the Bone Saw Prince and with Putin and Jung Un. 😁

Me also.  But it appears more likely he will adopt Obama's "bendover and spread 'em" diplomacy.

He already had a heart attack.

Luckily for him he lives in the US and he was able to take advantage of our healthcare system. If he were Canadian he'd be waiting a few more months to see a doctor.

Seriously. How can anyone get upset if Trump is ever easy on a country’s leader after Obama straight got butt focked by everyone during his presidency 😂

If it's Bernie vs Trump, I'd put the odds at about 10% that both are still around by 2024.  One has a bad heart and must have high blood pressure with the way he always yells and appears red faced, and the other is morbidly obese and eats KFC and inactive 23 hours a day.  Pay close attention to vice presidential candidates. Very good chance one of the two will be President before the 2024 election.

Does Trump play too much golf or is he inactive 23 hours a day?  Can't be both.

Secret ones with Iran where we sneak in billions of cash and release terrorists are way way cooler.

Golf?  That's your response to me saying he's inactive? lol  There have been summits where world leaders have to go from one building to the next and they all walk and Trump needs a golf cart.

Yes, playing golf is the opposite of being inactive for 23 hours a day.  It's real simple man, either he plays too much golf or he is inactive 23 hours a day..  Make up your mind, your don't get both.

So finding a long-buried 35 year-old sound bite of Sanders speaking in defense of Castro will be more concerning to voters than Trump's recent unburied words in defense of actual current authoritarian dictators like Putin, Erdogan, and Sisi?  Is that what the Trump supporters are counting on?  Ooof

Again, stepping out of his golf cart to walk 5 feet and swing a club 18 times is hardly activity.  Not when you eat nothing but junk food and are pushing 300 pounds. And was rushed to Walter reed Medical center recently in the middle of the night without ever revealing why.

Bottom line is, whether it's Bernie or Trump, we could wake up any morning to find out we have a new president. Health is obviously not a concern to the american voters

I'm going to go ahead and count the times he walks, unaided, to the bathroom too.  That's being active. 👍

Should have said for 18 holes.  Is that really your way of disputing that Trump is fat and in horrible shape?  Face it, Bernie and Trump are both huge risks, health-wise. Would still love to know why he was rushed to the hospital.

Obviously President Trump doesn't go jogging or hit the gym on a daily basis but he's hardly inactive for 23 hours a day.

The guy sleeps like 3 hours a night. He's constantly doing something. Not necessarily something physical but he's one of the busiest people on the planet.

Look at the difference in physical appearance presidents go through from the start of a term until the end of a term. Bush aged noticeably as did Obama, Clinton....

Trump looks the same now as he did before his election. Because he's used to the stress of constantly going, constantly being "on".

He may not be the healthiest guy ever but whatever he's doing it works for him. :dunno:

Here is the problem Team Trump has been having getting traction on throwing dirt on his opponents. Everything they try to pin on an opponent, Trump has done ten times worse.  When they were scared of Biden, they would post videos of him putting his hands on a little girl's shoulders.  Or hugging a woman a few seconds too long. They were trying to promote a 'creepy Joe'  vibe. But the public knows that Trump has nearly 20 different women who have come forward with sexual assault accusations.  So a 4 second hug isn't exactly disgusting anyone in comparison.  Then it was Bloomberg they were scared of.  "Stop and Frisk"!! He's a racist. Ummm, Trump has settled lawsuits because he refused to rent to black people. Made up the entire birtherism scam, and calls african countries sh*tholes.  Uhhh, next.  lol   And now accusing Bernie of defending a dictator when he had no problem with all with the bone saw Prince cutting up a journalist or snuggling up to his best buddy, Putin.

I guess Trump never said he was native american. He should probably root for Warren to win the nomination. 😂
