edjr 5,444 Posted March 23, 2020 I do IT for a 16 billion dollar Private Equity firm. My team and I have been essential in keeping the deals and finance teams working from home. I've been busier the past 2 weeks, than I have the past 2 months. How long will that last? I am not sure. Waiting to hear later today how the company has done the past 2 weeks. I feel extremely blessed. No one has been laid off or furloughed I do know that each of the 250 employees at the firm were given a $500 limit to expense equipment to work from home. Monitors/Printers/Peripherals etc. Everyone at the firm already had laptops. I have been into the office 4 times in the past 2 weeks.
Patriotsfatboy1 1,432 Posted March 23, 2020 We are going to people with voluntary options to reduce their hours or furlough. Furlough is an alternative to layoffs which allows them to keep benefits. At the end of this, we need to have the staff to get back to normal, so we don't want them going elsewhere after. We will also have some layoffs for people that aren't really in our long-term plans anyway. I have a job for now. Wife is laid off and just yesterday filed for unemployment as she thought it was only going to be a couple of weeks.

You should write a program that will skim off a fraction of a cent with every transaction. Make sure you don't get the decimal place wrong or you'll be in big trouble.

It's called "Salami Slicing". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salami_slicing
Strike 3,884 Posted March 23, 2020 I'm fortunate to work for a large company that, while impacted, has not really been impacted financially. In fact, my workload has probably been a little less (knock on wood) due to customer's not starting projects they would have but for this virus. So, I get to work from home but not work as hard. Lucky me I guess. I feel bad for anyone who has been negatively impacted at work. I hope it's short term with as little impact as possible for you.
titans&bucs&bearsohmy! 2,745 Posted March 23, 2020 I haven't worked since January 16. The first month was planned holiday. So far been getting paid to do nothing. Will they continue next month? Who knows? I believe the law says they are required to pay us 80% of local minimum wage (which is fock all). However, having foreigners is crucial to their business, they've already had some quit, and it won't be as easy to replace us as it is in most years. They may well continue paying us to do nothing. Thank God I work for a massive school with 10k students that can afford to eat the cost. Smaller schools started stuffing people long ago.

Can’t be too angry at companies over layoffs and furloughs etc. Forcing employees to reapply and dropping their seniority is just a dirtbag way of reducing everyone’s income. Thanks. Yah her casino is notorious for it. Especially management. They start management at a certain rate and give annual raises and Xmas bonuses based on years of service. When those numbers get too high the lay them off and allow them to reapply the worst thing is that they require credit checks to apply and that some might get screwed by that
DonS 3,050 Posted March 23, 2020 Luckily I'm able to do my job remotely. Definitely came in handy the other summer when I was dealing with cancer. Starting week 4 of completely working from home is starting to suck though. Job security wise I'd like to think that I'm OK. Our company is largely govt/military work. Head legal dude sent out an email with a "essential operations" letter we can print out and show to The Man in order to get to/from work if needed. Nice to be part of the Defense Industrial Base Sector (DIB). You down with DIB? Yeah you know me.

Thornton Melon 534 Posted March 23, 2020 3 of my 4 kids are laid off, at least temporarily. Wife is a teacher's assistant at a local school, so she has a 3 week (at least) paid vacation. My daughter that is working had a co-worker test positive last week, so my daughter just had the test this morning, and she's on quarantine nonetheless. If she tests positive, I'll be on a 2 week quarantine since she came home last Friday to do laundry. I'm working from home 2 or 3 days a week, but it's tough to get alot done from home in my job. I work for "Big Pharma" in manufacturing, so we're an "essential" business not subjected to the 2 week shutdown that Massachusetts is implementing at noon tomorrow (if you look at the list of exempt businesses, it would have been easier if they just listed who has to shut down).
