Internet for All

Recommended Posts

If schools start going to online teaching would it be fair to say that internet is a basic service that everyone should have access to?  Make it available like over-the-air TV broadcasts to everyone for free.  I saw this brought up on Twitter and I found it interesting.

Utilities aren't free. You need electricity before you can have the internet and that's not free. You can't just start making things free imo. Need to pay someone to do the job of bringing your home and maintaining internet. If you want the gov to start paying them on citizens behalf then it just opens a can of worms

There needs to be a balance to this stuff though. There always needs to be balance. We shouldn't be stuck with just Comcast as our only option with barely any competition.

It almost seems to be a basic human need now.  I would support the government diverting money from Afghanistan, Iraq, or the Korean peninsula to assure that every American has access to affordable and dependable high-speed internet, if not free for lower incomes.

Them too.  We could even add a 1 cent tax per online order placed.  Put that money towards it.

How would you do this for people that are in very desolate areas?

MY house is a basic human need. When is the government going to pay for that?

Been saying it for years.  The internet is the gateway to commerce and therefore should be for for all.  And will be eventually.

I would treat it similar to OTA broadcasts.  We all have the right to receive out local broadcast channels without a subscription.  We have to pay for an antenna and the TV but the service is free.  It's a basic service and most people pay other providers for more content.  Why couldn't internet be done like this?

Not sure.  That's where the government would have to work on the infrastructure.  Internet can be broadcast off of towers and received by a small dish antenna on the house.

Are you in favor of charging for OTA broadcast then?

Also, if you wanted the government to pay for housing as a basic need then you'd have to be willing to accept a very basic house.

To the OP. No I like my high speed internet that I pay good money for and don't want stupid laggy government internet. Why are you people always asking for free stuff?

Ummm, no.  Having the government provide technology related items like this will stifle improvements.  Feel free to give the common masses some sort of cheap dial-up Internet if you want.  I want telcos providing 5G and 6G stuff instead of just trying to get by with the bare minimum required to meet governmental requirements.

A consortium of Amazon, Apple, Microsoft could easily afford to pay for and will profit handsomely.  And they would do it in a heartbeat.

According to my daughter, her school cannot do internet-based learning during this lockdown because 20% of her classmates do not have the internet at home.

Online learning is going to be much more common in the future and this issue needs to be addressed.  Not sure how or by who but something needs to be done.

Why would you have to give up your high speed internet?  I think you were missing the concept.  You people?

There are a lot of parts of the country that do not have internet access or it's terrible quality.  Some places can only get internet through satellite service which is not as good or reliable.  Not only that, it's more expensive.

You guys can be so focking stupid sometimes.  I'm not even going to argue.  Yeah, every child in my daughter's school whose parents do not provide access to the internet in their home is a lazy pile of sh!t.  OK.  Gotcha.

Morons.

Did the parents pay tuition for the physical  school to be open and functioning? If the school aint open, put the tuition towards the internet. Negotiate a discounted rate with the supplier for the student's limited access.

Is it extremely rural and no company will build the infrastructure?

Someone, maybe it was me, posted a link to a story where a town built their own internet infrastructure in PA because isp wouldn't do it. They claimed it wasn't worth the investment financially. Once the area built up the lobbyists were able to convince the state to bar municipalities from acting as their own isp. Now that's some bull shlt. You have to sit back and accept you can't get internet until a company decides your area is worth it.

Not if the government provides  it. Government = FCC. Think man, think. This is as a bi-partisan issue as you will ever get around here. We have to stick together.

If it is like the school my son goes to, a lot don't have internet because of income...  A lot of them are on free and reduced lunches...  Though most of the kids have the latest iPhone's for status symbols...
