People not paying rent "because coronavirus". Not given refunds, etc. Thoughts?

So if your sink breaks or toilet is running all over you shouldn't be able to go to a store to get basic home maintenance material ?

If it's essential, you should call a plumber.  They can purchase the material(s) and take care of it.  Alternatively, the big box stores could be limited to selling only those materials for essential home repairs.  Either option seems fine.

I think there are a lot of people heading to Lowe's to take care of maintenance work that isn't essential, which increases the spread of coronavirus.

I'm not advocating either way, but if vudu's shop got shut down, I don't see why Lowes and Home Depot can sell the same products simply because they offer some essential items.

I get it but a service call to a professional around here starts at $125 and then another 100 an hour for labor.. nobody should have to pay $200 to replace a rubber gasket they can do themselves for $5. Sorry home maintenance is an essential biz and you can't police people doing home projects. Close down the paint center if you want

That's focking bullsh@t it that is happening.

There must be some small difference in the product or service they offer  (loophole) that allows them to stay open?

There’s no IF.   It’s happening.

Home Depot, Lowe’s and Menards all sell Home Improvement goods and construction materials.

We sell all types of flooring and window treatments.  So do they.

I’ve mentioned this before, but I’ll say it again.   Those stores are absolutely NOT shutting down their flooring and window treatment departments.  Those stores are packed right now and homeowners are buying all sorts of stuff while they’re at home and can spend more time working on their homes.

Who’s better equipped to control human contact?   A mom and pop shop who averages 2-3 customers per day and can let them in by appointment only, or a big box chain that gets 100x that amount of foot traffic per day?

I’m not even saying we should be open.  I’m saying the big boxes shouldn’t be.

He's referring to Lowe's and Home Depot who are deemed essential.  Personally, I'm having a hard time wrapping my hands around the notion that during this pandemic people are rushing to home Depot for flooring.

My BIL works is a GM at Lowe’s Says they’re swamped.  Says in stock vinyl and tile are both moving well.

Can’t handle the workload in some departments because they can’t get enough staff to come to work.   Thus, the reduced store hours.

ETA:  below is a FB post from my wife’s friend at HD

”So glad to be back at work after a week off.  I’m disgusted at how many people are in here shopping like there’s nothing going on in the world.    Then they look at me like I’m crazy when I ask them to stay 6’ away from me.”

Every landlord: "you better pay yer focking rent!"

Also landlords "Can we suspend our mortgage payments temporarily?"

I agree.  I'm not a proponent of shutting things down in general.  But if they're shutting him down, then the same products sold by big box stores should be shut down too IMO.  It's either essential, or it's not.

Yep.  People see this as a great opportunity to get caught up on those home projects they've been putting off.

If we're only supposed to be doing "essential" work, then only contractors should be allowed to purchase anything from these box stores.  And if that's the case, vudu should remain open as well.

Vudu - Did you look into what you'd need to sell in order to be considered essential?  Maybe you need to start selling some plumbing fittings.

My wife’s company is right next door.  They are a plumbing supply company but this location is a kitchen and bath showroom.  There’s no parts counter there.  But, still deemed essential.  Dumb.

There isn’t a single dept in those stores that are off limits.  None.

I know which side I'm on.  I am wondering your side.

These days, so many people, even when not necessary, know they can get away with anything "because coronavirus".   Some may have reasons...real reasons related to it.  But I think many just use it in the same the way the blacks use the race card.

On another note, the gym I go to, I pre-pay $780 a year for a family membership.  I asked about a refund for the month they are going to be closed.  The person said "Not looking like any refunds, as the coronvirus was out of our control."  I said...uh...that's now how it works.   The NCAA Tourney was canceled. People had tickets.  Do you think they are just telling people "No refunds because we can't help it because coronavirus"?  She said, "We are having meetings about it because others have asked about refunds also, but I don't know why we would have to refund"

And zero focking chance they don't refund unless they go bankrupt.  At least my money anyway.  Its all about principle.

So not just rent, but what else are people gonna use the corona card on?

My gym suspended everyone’s membership without even being asked.

Wall Street is getting half a trillion dollars in bailout $. If ExxonMobil and United Airlines don’t have a 3-6 month rainy day fund, why would I expect that from your Average Joe?

Ideally we’d have a federal Department of Fairness that would sit there deciding who deserves what based on a thorough investigation of everyone’s situation and how they handled their finances pre coronavirus etc.

In the real world that’s not possible so you pass the best bill you can and accept that a certain % of folks are going to make out better than they should. In the grand scheme it’s a drop in the bucket.

That's my point. If the members are all still paying dues, the gym can afford to pay their employees for the hours they would normally be working.

There's no excuse for continuing to collect dues and simultaneously letting people go.

They aren't collecting dues.  They aren't billing for April.

That's great for the people who pay monthly.

I prepaid for the year.

They have to give you a free month then. No question about it.

Unless there's something in the contract that stipulates that, "in the event of a viral pandemic, we will not be responsible for refunding dues based on involuntary closure blah blah blah".... or some such buIIshit.

If they do that then steal a bunch of towels for the remainder of membership then find a new gym.

What did the contracts look like?  You've obviously seen them, but we haven't.  You have a pdf or sumthin we can look at?

These bailouts we keep doing are a focking joke. Doing ANYTHING to help normal people? Socialism. Bad. Can't do it.

Constantly bailing out multi billion dollar corporations? Totally fine.

Truly makes me sick. Our government has been bought and sold utterly.
