A prestigious scientific panel told the White House Wednesday night that research shows coronavirus can be spread not just by sneezes or coughs, but also just by talking, or possibly even just breathing.

"While the current [coronavirus] specific research is limited, the results of available studies are consistent with aerosolization of virus from normal breathing," according to the letter, written by Dr. Harvey Fineberg, chairman of a committee with the National Academy of Sciences.

Fineberg told CNN that he will wear start wearing a mask when he goes to the grocery store.

UV light.

Thanks.  I had heard that UV was good for killing it.  It is after all a bat virus; maybe we should call it the vampire flu?

How are they sterilizing them?

Generally by cutting or tying the tubes.

Victoria's secret, after suffering multiple quarters of losses due to the rise in so-called athleisure wear, has shifted its production of bras to convert them into face masks.

We are re-using our N95s up to five times. At the end of your shift you take it to be collected and sterilized. After the 4th time being sterilized, it is disposed of.

That’s dumb. They should use them one last time if they bothered to sterilize them. :dunno:

We hang our masks next to the window to get sunlight when we're not wearing them.

I see people riding alone in their cars wearing masks. I can not figure out what it’s protecting them from.

My wife does this; after being in a Costco for instance, she leaves the mask on until she gets home.  The theory is that the mask could be infected, so she waits until she gets home to put it somewhere safe (cleaning pile) and can immediately wash her hands.  IMO that is a bit of overkill since we carry clorox wipes in our car -- I take mine off after the store and wipe down my hands.  I suppose I could be coronafying the passenger seat, but I'm not driving anyone around at this point, and at some point I quit.  :dunno:

It just makes sense to wear a mask so you don’t spread it to others as well as get it from others. Also any and every public metal door you touch could have been touched by 1000 others and one of them had the virus, coughed, touched the door now you can get it, touch your mouth, now you are infected.

Sharon Lerner April 1 2020, 12:09 p.m.

... “We were all hearing the same story over and over again: We don’t have the equipment we need, we don’t have masks, we don’t have what we need to protect ourselves,” said Rev. David K. Brawley of the St. Paul Community Baptist Church in East Brooklyn. Many of Brawley’s congregants are front-line health care workers — “the folks who work in services within the hospitals, and not just doctors, also the folks who people tend to forget about,” he said. “These are people I deeply care about and love.”

So organizers from the group, whose member organizations include religious congregations, unions, schools, community health centers, and other civic institutions, began to investigate whether they might be able to arrange a purchase of some of the supplies themselves — and quickly found themselves in what has become the “Wild West” global market of medical supplies. Among the suppliers they identified was a Canadian distributor who claimed last week to have millions of N95 masks, but demanded a minimum purchase of 20 million.

Within hours of the distributor’s demand, the group had assembled a consortium of 19 different entities in need of the masks, including two major hospital chains, one city health department in Colorado, six county governments in three states, and one governor’s office. Though several of the buyers were also hoping to purchase gowns, gloves, ventilators, and other supplies, they were pooling resources to be able to put in the minimum order of 3M’s 1860 N95 mask, which protects health care workers against airborne particles and is “resistant to splash and spatter of blood and other infectious materials.”

Although the 1860 N95 masks should cost $1.27 each, according to a price list 3M issued yesterday April 1 2020, the Canadiandealer was charging more than $7 per mask. But the jacked-up price isn’t what killed the deal. Even the major hospital chains were desperate enough to spend the money. Instead, the group’s purchase began to fall apart when the dealer said that the Canadian military had seized 10 million of the masks and then insisted that the group not only commit to buying the remaining 20 million masks but also to five additional monthly purchases of 20 million masks, totaling $140 million ...The Metro Industrial Areas Foundation, or Metro IAF, a Queens-based nonprofit, responded to 3M’s statement yesterday with a letter to the company’s CEO, Mike Roman, insisting that Roman make it clear to the company’s distributors that if they take advantage of the desperate need for protective gear they won’t be able to sell 3M’s products in the future ... The group is also demanding that, within 72 hours, 3M put together a database of its worldwide inventory of N95 masks, with product information, quantities, pricing, payment terms, location, and contact information — and make it available to health care providers ...

Has said database materialized?? Roman, when asked yesterday about gouging/profiteering &tc, declined to answer the question, and deflected to "3M plus-net imports." Zero specifics, zero relevant facts, zero patriotism. Thanks Roman. You're a heckuva guy. A real zero. Now there's a big one painted on your back.

As Chief Executive Officer at 3M CO, Michael F. Roman made $9,843,753 in total compensation. Of this total $1,049,976 was received as a salary, $1,431,503 was received as a bonus, $3,610,217was received in stock options, $3,610,286 was awarded as stock and $141,771 came from other types of compensation. This information is according to proxy statements filed for the 2018 fiscal year.

Florida emergency management official says

3M selling masks to foreign countries: 'We're chasing ghosts'

By Yael Halon | Fox News

Jared Moskowitz told "Tucker Carlson Tonight" Thursday that he discovered that 3M distributors were prioritizing foreign buyers after they refused to sell him the essential equipment.

"For the last several weeks, we have had a boiler room chasing down 3M authorized distributors [and] brokers representing that they sell the N95 masks, only get to warehouses that are completely empty," Moskowitz said. "[We are] being told that our shipments are on cargo planes and the flights don't even appear. We are chasing ghosts. I just decided to turn up the heat and tell people what is actually happening in the N95 mask space."

Moskowitz claimed to have reached out to many 3M authorized distributors in the United States to confirm his suspicions, and said he was shocked to find American companies quietly partnering with foreign buyers at a time of national crisis.

"I can't, other emergency management directors, CEOs of hospitals can't get this life-saving PPE [Personal Protective Equipment] because a company decided to make a globalist decision and not put America first."

Moskowitz voiced his frustrations on Twitter and said he was later contacted by the communications team at Minnesota-based 3M, who admitted to a "broken system" but stopped short of taking action.

"I thought perhaps maybe what 3M would finally say to me is that they have masks to sell me, but what I actually found out is even more frightening," he explained. "... Which is that the system is completely broken. 3M has lost total control. What I asked 3M is, are they aware their authorized distributors -- U.S. companies -- are telling me the reason why our orders are being pushed down is because foreign countries are showing up with cash to purchase the orders ... not only did they not dispute it, [but] I asked them if they put out any guidance to prevent the behavior and the answer was no," Moskowitz added.

3M told Moskowitz that they had no stock to sell him, despite producing close to 10 million masks a day,

" I said ... 'I have money and I'd like to purchase some of those.' They said I couldn't, they have no masks to sell me. It's criminal what is happening."

Moskowitz emphasized that his criticism is not directed towards the "workers in the factories at 3M who are working 24 hours a day to try to create this life-saving PPE. This is about the executives who decided not to put America first and it's going to have devastating consequences."

The official said he offered to pay "ten, sometimes twenty" times of the standard price of the masks, but was denied. "I'm relegated to making deals with brokers at costs that are ten and sometimes 20 times the actual costs of these masks, [but] at the end of the day, regardless of the cost of this point, getting the mask is the most important and we can't even get them." Earlier in the week, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said his state was on the hunt for N95 masks and called the procurement process "shady as hell," adding that despite ordering "so many," they only get a little bit here and a little bit there.”

I thought the whole point of wearing a mask is to protect other people from you, who may be an asymptomatic carrier of Wuhan Pneumonia.

It prevents you coughing and sneezing your cooties on to other people when out stocking up on beer.

(talking about the little surgical/tampon/underoos masks that they are recommending for the public, not the N95 masks for medical workers)

On the bright side, this has exposed how unprepared federal agencies, states, cities, and hospitals were for a crisis.

Can't really blame it all on the Bad Orange Man either since we have learned this has been an issue for decades.

And to add insult to injury, the CDC, NIH, John Hopkins, Bill Gates, and all of the "think tanks" have participated in multiple mock pandemic exercises, as recently as Oct 2019 (Event 201 - a mock pandemic of a novel coronavirus originating from bats 😆 that killed 60 million Americans) and apparently none of them bothered to take action on the lessons learned.

At least when this flu that kills already sick old people is in the rearview mirror we should have millions of PPE and tens of thousands of ventilators stockpiled for the next big one.
