Sports card market is on fire.

Recommended Posts

The overall market was going gang busters right before the NBA postponement.  Then it took a dive for a few weeks.

It has since recovered and the big name cards have surpassed their all time highs of mid March.

There are no live sports, no fantasy sports, and no sports gambling.

This is the only sports action people can get right now.

Plus, lots of people got stimulated.

On top of that people are home and have nothing to do. Box prices have gone through roof

Yep.  No new releases from Topps or Panini til after COVID.  I’ve been buying up hobby boxes for the past few weeks.  Even grabbing some of the more desirable junk wax boxes.

The breakers are already scrambling to get their hands on something to open.

Even the sleeves and top loaders are out of stock.   I was looking to buy a bunch of that to sell at retail but the distributor is out of stock.

Where do you buy a full unopened box for each season?  How much does it cost and which sports and brands would be the best ones to purchase?  Would it be considered an investment to buy one each year and store them somewhere?

EBay, Blowout Cards website, a local card shop or through me if you want.

Certain years and sets are more desirable than others so that’s tough to answer.   But stashing away unopened boxes is definitely a strategy many people use.

Generally, vintage singles are a great investment if it’s the right player.  Mantle, Mays, Aaron, etc.  I would buy those graded if possible so you know exactly what you’re getting.

There are dozens of FB groups where lots of buying, selling and trading goes on.  Mostly singles and player lots there, and almost all modern and current players.

If you’re bored, join some of those and you’ll start to see what sells.

I have no clue about those but I was considering buying some boxes to resell.  I guess not.

I also have a source to get board games wholesale but I don’t know what’s popular there yet.  Any ideas about that stuff?

As you know when prices are low that's always the time to be a buyer.

If you want to see what's popular I recommend looking here: https://www.boardgamegeek.com/browse/boardgame

How much for a Billy Ripkin 'F*ck Face' card?

There are a few different versions of that card but I’ve seen them flog for about $20-$25

Ok. Here’s my tip of the day:

If you have any old Michael Jordan cards laying around that you’ve been told are worthless, run, don’t walk to eBay and post them for auction now.   You might be presently surprised at what happens.

Have a friend who collects sports cards and he said the same, lots of big value jumps.

It’s really gonna explode when a pro league announces they will play an actual game.

I wonder how much my Todd Van Poppel rookie card is worth these days.

Back in 7th grade that thing was gold.

I'll trade you my Todd Marinovich rookie card even up.

You should get some bids near the end of your auction.  Lots of hype surrounding the upcoming documentary

That’s a few grand between the rookie card and the Sticker.

I have a lot of stuff from 85 to about 94.  I was heavy into it, but started losing interest when there was 25 different rookie cards for one player.

And don't get me started on the jersey-inserted cards.  That was the dumbest idea ever.

Any Jordan rookie needs to be authenticated. Highest forged card in history

Guilty.  You were born when I was in high school. I collected cards from when I was 7 to around 20. But still picked up boxes occasionally after. That 91 Upper Deck was big. Probably have the compete set in never touched condition

Yes. Risky to buy those raw but people do it.

That whole set is.

I believe, that 86 fleer set is the considered the most counterfeited set in history. Out of Baseball, Football, Basketball, and Hockey.

The ironic thing is. It's also one of the most flawed. As far off centered goes. I would think, getting a real, complete, mint set would be like finding bigfoot.

Congrats to anyone you know that has one.

The most iconic set ever. I think it changed the industry for both the good and the bad.
