Ruth Bader Ginsburg hospitalized with infection: court

Recommended Posts

Nothing will off this chick prior to the election. Nothing. After that, the left will just take the bubble wrap off her if biden somehow pulls it out.

87-year-old justice sought medical care Monday because of gallstones

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was hospitalized Tuesday with an infection caused by a gallstone, but plans to take part in the court’s arguments by telephone Wednesday, the Supreme Court said.

The 87-year-old justice underwent non-surgical treatment for what the court described as acute cholecystitis, a benign gall bladder condition, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.

The only way Trump will get to choose another judge to SCOTUS is if he wins a second term...  I would guess that the same thing that happened when Obama was leaving would happen again...

Do the Dems have the same power as the republicans to stop it?

CDub is right here.  When the Republican's held off the Garland appointment, it's because they controlled the Senate, just like they do now.  If RBG did pass away, the Republican's would push the appointment through to a Senate vote/approval.  I don't know for a fact, but the Dem's may be able to drag things out.  Someone who knows more than me on this topic would have to weigh in on that.  Personally, I don't think it'll matter because I think Trump will get re-elected.  I think, had Hillary won, RBG would have stepped down a couple years ago.  She's only hanging in there in hopes that a Dem wins.

I don't want anyone to die, but I would love it if Trump has the ability to appoint 2 more SC Justices who would be taking the place of liberal judges.  The stroke that the Left would have would be beautiful.

The democrats probably assigned a world class medical detail to Ginsberg's place of residence. Maybe a doctor or two, a couple nurses and a 24x7 running fully stocked ambulance in the driveway. Oh, and a reserved presidential type hospital room at all the hospitals in the state.

If biden should win, their job is done with her.

She needs to step down. This is ridiculous. Edit: But she’s still more aware than Biden, so maybe not. If she knows it’s Sunday and what state she’s in she  has a leg up on him. Where’s Hunter? Rehab I hope.

Yup Hillary was going to win. She wanted to be on the court when that happened and she wanted a women to be the one to pick her replacement.

If she can do her job... apparently she can as she was just involved in that last decision that the SC weighed in on, then fine.  I'm just hoping that when she needs to be replaced, there's no dog and pony show pretending that she doesn't.  Oh, and hopefully Trump is President... or another Republican if she hangs in there another 5 years.  God willing, Republican's have a nice run in the White House and pull a 9-0 SC edge!

She made it this far, I think she'll be ok.  While I don't really agree with Sotomayor's politics, I have no issues with her being on the SC.  She's spent plenty of time on the bench at the higher levels.  Honestly, Kagan really is the only one who doesn't belong there.  She literally got the job because she was a woman, and reasonably young.  I mean, looking up her resume... I don't think she was ever actually in a court room.  She went from student to a consultant, to a teacher, then a political appointee, to the Supreme Court.  There is a 0% chance that she was the best candidate for the position.

She has as much trial experience as I do.

I mean really, shouldn't you have at least been a judge for like 1 second?  Imagine if Trump nominated a person with that level of experience.  The outrage would be meteoric.

Not really. Mitch McConnell  has proven to be perfectly willing to be fully hypocritical and change positions on procedural issues 180 degrees whenever the situation changes. Dem leaders are the same way, see Schumer or Pelosi. You don't get consistency in this job, you get somebody willing to adjust their sails to whichever direction the prevailing winds are blowing. If what they're saying now contradicts totally what they'd said last session, well, sh*t happens.

You can take this to the bank.

Believe me, if Trump loses the presidency and McConnell loses control of the Senate in November elections, and then RBG promptly dies, we'll have a new SCOTUS justice rammed through the lameduck session at breakneck speed before Biden and Schumer are sworn in come January. RBG could die December 29th; just give Trump and McConnell 60 hours and we'll have a new SCOTUS justice sworn in before the ball drops in New York City on New Year's Eve. The stakes are too high, they will not pay around on this. Call McConnell a lying hypocrite the rest of his life, you can add it to the other two dozen times he's been a total lying hypocrite before. The man once filibustered his own bill when he'd realized he'd made a tactical error. He has no shame. The man wants results and does not care about consistency. In that regard, he's not a lick different than how any of the Dem leaders are on these issues.

I agree with you.  That said, technically, McConnell wouldn't be hypocritical... exactly, on this.  McConnell stated that the precedent for not confirming Garland was because Obama was leaving the office forever, which actually is true.  If RBG passes away this week, Trump can still be President in 12 months.  That wasn't the case for Obama.  Obama was a lame duck President, Trump is not.

Now, if RBG does pass away the day after the election and Trump lost and Dems take control of the Senate (aside from that being an E.L.E.), Trump will nominate a judge and McConnell will push the nomination through.  He is an azzhat and I do not like him at all.  I'd like for the Republican's to replace him as the majority leader... I'd also prefer for Kentucky to not re-elect him.

Justice Ginsburg says cancer has returned, but won’t retire**

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said Friday she is receiving chemotherapy for a recurrence of cancer, but has no plans to retire from the Supreme Court.

The 87-year-old Ginsburg, who has had four earlier bouts with cancer including pancreatic cancer last year, said her treatment so far has succeeded in reducing lesions on her liver and she will continue chemotherapy sessions every two weeks “to keep my cancer at bay.”

“I have often said I would remain a member of the Court as long as I can do the job full steam. I remain fully able to do that,” Ginsburg said in a statement issued by the court.

Ginsburg, who was appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1993, is the senior liberal justice on a court that leans conservative by a 5-4 margin. Her departure before the election could give President Donald Trump the chance to shift the court further to the right.

Ginsburg’s history with cancer goes back more than 20 years. In addition to being treated without surgery for a tumor on her pancreas last year, she also underwent surgery for colorectal cancer in 1999, pancreatic cancer in 2009 and lung cancer in December 2018.

Dr. Alan Venook, a pancreatic cancer specialist at the University of California, San Francisco, who is not involved in Ginsburg’s care, said that “clearly, she’s got incurable disease now” because of the spread to her liver.

On average, patients with advanced pancreatic cancer live about a year, but the fact that her disease took so long to recur from her initial pancreatic cancer surgery in 2009 and previous treatments “suggests that it’s not been growing rapidly,” he said.

“She’s above average in many ways.” and has done remarkably well with all her treatments so far, Venook said. “There’s no reason to think she would die imminently.”

Asked earlier this week about a possible opening on the court before the election, White House chief of staff Mark Meadows said the president would act quickly if any opening were to arise. Meadows commented after news that Ginsburg had left the hospital after receiving treatment for an infection, which she said Friday was unrelated to the cancer.

“I can’t imagine if he had a vacancy on the Supreme Court that he would not very quickly make the appointment and look for the Senate to take quick action,” Meadows said, adding that he didn’t want any comment to be seen as wishing Ginsburg “anything but the very best.”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has said that if there were to be a vacancy on the court during this year’s election cycle, the Republican-controlled Senate would likely confirm a nominee selected by Trump.

Ginsburg said she was disclosing her cancer treatment now because she is satisfied “that my treatment course is now clear.”

Venook said the chemotherapy drug Ginsburg said she is getting, gemcitabine, is one that’s often used. Immunotherapy, which Ginsburg’s statement said she tried unsuccessfully, has not worked well for pancreatic cancer, Venook said.

Ginsburg said a medical scan in February revealed growths on her liver and she began chemotherapy in May.

“My most recent scan on July 7 indicated significant reduction of the liver lesions and no new disease,” she said. “I am tolerating chemotherapy well and am encouraged by the success of my current treatment.”

Ginsburg noted that she is able to “maintain an active daily routine” and that throughout her treatment she has “kept up with opinion writing and all other Court work.”

When the justices heard arguments via telephone in May because of the coronavirus pandemic, Ginsburg participated one day from a hospital room in Baltimore. She was being treated for gall stones, and said Friday that hospitalization also had nothing to do with the cancer.
