Praying

I wrote out a long, thoughtful post on the possible powers of prayer/meditation on people around you, and this is what you got out of it?  Something that was agreed upon in my first paragraph as a given?  Did you even read my post?  If so it doesn't appear that there is a discussion to be had after all.  :(

They just want to say an easy to attack group of people are stupid so they can feel smart. It’s that simple. If people meditate and pray and it makes them feel good why would you care? It has no affect on you. Attacking religion or any other spiritual endeavor and calling it stupid isn’t unique or new. It’s been going on forever. And it’s easy with no ramifications for them. It’s useless words that make them feel good. Wait a second, that’s the very argument they make. Lol.

As for religion, I am not religious.  My father is, but he is very old.  Times have changed.   I see it helping many people in many different situations.  And I have no problem with it.  Other than a couple family members upset at the push back I gave it as a kid, I have never really had it pushed upon me.

Different strokes for different folks in this case.   I think it helps people much more than it hurts people....at least in this country.   Even if I dont think any of it is true.

This is pretty much how I feel about religion. I haven't believed in the invisible sky man since I was about 18, but don't care that others do. The fact that most evangelicals support Trump turned me from not believing in God to not believing in religion at all. It's all just hollow words. Being a good person doesn't seem to be a factor to those people, so it's all nonsense.  That being said, when someone loses a loved one, I will usually say that they're in my thoughts and prayers.  Or I often say that I pray things turn out okay if they say they're going in for surgery or something.

Yes, of all the religions,  evangelicals are the big problem, first and foremost.

I started typing out something in response to the rest of what you said, but I was still waking up and the words were not coming out well at all. I do completely agree that whatever type of meditation that makes you a happier person is more prone to help others feel better. I do believe matter is all related, and that it's possible for some people to be able to read energy signals based on matter.

I worked for a guy who was half Indian, the red kind, who told me some really interesting stories. He talked about how him and his wife love to play slots. He told me this story of going to a casino in Mississippi where he ended up winning over $30k, but it wasn't just one huge jackpot. It was taking money from all different slot machines when they were about to hit. He then told me about 5 more stories similar to this one. Basically he said slot machines are like atms to him. He can walk passed them and feel when they are about to pop, and he can tell when the machine he is on is about to cool down.

He could have been lying about it. Usually someone who lies about something like that is an obvious liar all the time. I never thought he made things up when he talked to me, and he didn't have any other semi outrageous stories that compulsive liars are known for. I think it's possible for some people to be sensitive to energy signals like that, (not like in a magical way, but in a scientific way that humans don't understand) even if it's on a subconscious level.

I'm not saying they're a problem. I'm saying what they pretend to stand for is a joke

And what makes them different from Judaism or Islam in that context?

Have you ever IRL actually had an atheist ask you that? Religious people get all kinds of lip service in politics, tax free clubs and special legal rights that aren’t afforded non believers but that’s not good enough. Everybody else has to respect their belief in the pet rock in the sky too.

You seem really upset about all of this.

Who said they were different?  Why do you always want to create your own little discussions when the ones you start aren't working well for you?

Trump deemed Churches to be essential and said all can override state orders and open this weekend.

Sound like someone got some campaign money from evangelicals.

Crowds are safe if they're in a house of worship.   Anyone wanna bet if Trump feels it's safe enough for him to go to church this weekend?

Seems like the athiests are really triggered in this thread.

I have no problem with any dumbasses who want to get together.  I'd be the first person in favor of Trump rallies too.

Just love seeing Trump kowtow to evangelists because they're a big voting base for him, and deeming them as essential.  essential. lol  And they don't even pay taxes.

They are essential. Religion is essential to a lot of people. Just because you are an empty being, doesn't mean everyone is.

I wonder why the left "kowtows" to illegals? They aren't even US citizens. Talk about non essential.

My favorite is they had some pastor on the news saying they were essential and that they are not looking for preferential treatment just fair treatment. I started yelling at the TV OK pay taxes!!

AZ never shut down churches; they were deemed essential and constitutionally protected by our governor, who BTW is great (Doug Ducey, remember that name).  Most churches did shut down because it was the right thing to do.  Now they have mostly opened back up.  Remarkably we haven't all died of the Covid since then; it's a miracle!

They opened a church? I can't believe I'm still alive. :shocking:

Doesn't God have a plan for everyone? That to me would suggest that no matter what we do it is already predetermined. So what is the point of prayer if the result has already been decided?

ETA - MDC is on the same line of thinking and beat me to it.

You see, apparently, the immortal, eternal, omnipotent creator of heaven and earth has quite the ego. He really gets p!say when the creatures he created and set in a world rife with disease and danger and poverty and tragedy don't constantly grovel and kiss his ass and tell him how awesome he is.

So true...

Here's where I find religion the most absurd. I am not a believer so even if I'd live life perfectly,  help homeless people, help children in 3rd world countries it doesn't matter what I do I'm not getting into heaven or whatever heaven is.

If I murder 10 people...find religion in jail...kiss the ring...I go to heaven.

You can keep that fairy tale bs.

Again..give me one proof of afterlife that's not written in the bible. Seems like if you're going to base your life around this idea it should be easy to prove.

They are stupid because they think they speak to a god, or that that god exists because of the bible but you ask them to prove an after life exists without using the bible? Crickets.

Why would someone buy a product that has to be put together with numerous pieces, tools, etc. and then choose to toss the instruction manual aside when the manufacturer provided it to make the assembly so much easier to understand?
