I think if something happened to Biden they would have to have Bernie be the nominee or the party would just revolt and divide into halves.   Bernie was number two for two straight elections. In 2016, many from the socialist wing thought he was screwed over. You don't hear that as much this time because Bernie did terribly from South Carolina on, but he was still clearly the runner up.  If they'd bypass him, the entire socialist wing would stay home. 

I don't think anyone they'd put up would stand a chance against Trump. Beating Trump is all about voter turnout. There really is no other factor. Putting up Bernie would lose that many African-American voters.  Choosing anyone except Bernie would cost them all those socialists.

What remarks has he said that are racist?  I mean, he has said things like "We don't need more Haitians", but the democrats make ALL KINDS of disparaging remarks about Russians to the point where they have generated memes about it and depict them as villains in movies like Tenet.  And no one is apologizing for that either.

The left feels locked into accepting 100% of it, and are unwilling to walk it back even if it means movies bomb, TV shows die from lack of viewers, and comic books get cancelled after a few issues.  They think they can win by just pushing 5x as hard but instead they are driving everyone away.  They might just back Biden until the bitter end because they don't know how to turn around.
