I'm new to the sport, but it seems like the ref was overly concerned about his fingers. Either way that was a good fight. I was surprised it took the ref that long to call it. I was surprised it took the ref that long to call it. Yeah, I thought the stoppage was way late. I understand wanting to let fighters fight but it was clear Aldo had nothing left to offer and he was taking needless damage. The finger thing is because for a number of years fighters would have their fingers wide open and pointed, ostensibly to be prepared to grapple, but often it just seemed like it was used to keep their opponent from coming at them out of fear of getting poked in the eye. I can't tell you how many fights I've seen stopped because an eye poke caused vision issues for one of the fighters. So a couple years ago they tweaked the rules. The refs are pretty proactive on that issue now to just avoid it happening. It's definitely a bit subjective, and some refs are more vocal than others, but it's not uncommon for refs to warn fighters about it. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
