Reading he and his wife's symptoms it's not even as bad as the flu. So I guess you're right and we overestimated the severity. Turns out it's no worse than the common cold.

It most likely does.  I saw an awesome scientific explanation about 4 months ago.  Basically it opens the cells for zinc to get in, much like insulin does for glucose.  And studies from 15 years ago show its efficacy against SARS, another coronavirus.
