phins1921 10 Posted August 26, 2020 I currently play in a redraft league and was asked to join a auction league. They seem to be a lot of fun. What do many of you prefer better? Tia.
AxeElf 787 Posted August 26, 2020 Most auction leagues ARE redraft leagues. I think you may be aiming at a distinction between old-fashioned, antiquated beginner drafts (i.e., snake drafts) and their more advanced, more modern brothers, the auction drafts, which all skilled fantasy players recognize as the better system for constructing a fantasy team. Those with lesser skill who can only mark the next name off of a player list when its their turn to draft, or who have to rely on taking turns picking players so they don't get too badly screwed, or who need to get a little lucky to have any chance of competing, prefer snake drafts. Serenity Now 48 Posted August 26, 2020 Auction definitely allows for you to build a team how you want, rather than seeing what players fall to you in snake. That being said, for the average family league or old college buddy league, where some people are really into it and some people just set lineups, auction is going to make it very lopsided and not be very fun. It is more time consuming, and you can't take breaks to get food or smoke em if ya got em in the middle. But what a rush it is...

If your league has a bunch of pansies who are always saying things like, "Hurry up!" and "Let's get this draft over with" like they were going to the dentist, they probably aren't going to like expanding the draft from an hour and a half to three hours or so--but for those of us to whom draft day is like Christmas, the longer it takes, the better. TBayXXXVII 2,328 Posted August 26, 2020 I did an auction draft a couple of years, I liked it.
Ray_T 687 Posted August 27, 2020 I have one league that drafts a serpentine draft. one that does auction. the Auction one is way more fun, but also time consuming.
polecatt 443 Posted August 27, 2020 I prefer dynasty leagues where you must evaluate all your players each season for the long haul instead of just one season. I've never really played in an auction league, played in a salary league before, and redraft but not auction.

The beauty of an auction is that it allows you to get the players you want, and not have to settle for different players than I had originally planned. So all of my auction-drafted teams tend to look pretty much alike. The best investment strategy is a highly UNdiversified portfolio--when you are right (and I'm Axe Elf). Utilit99 4,099 Posted August 29, 2020 I've been in an auction league for the past 15 years or so. It's a higher money league and we have tweeked it over the years with our keeper structure, payouts, investments, changed from 10-12 teams, etc. to really keep everyone engaged 100% thru each season. To me, the auction is so much more fun on draft day and building strategy going in to the draft as well. To me the is a lot more planning going in to be successful. FlyinHeadlock 459 Posted August 29, 2020 Auctions, if done right should feel like you are the GM of a real team. Manage cap space, payrolls, keeper contracts, free agency bids. Very complicated and time consuming so not for everyone but fun as hell once you get the hang of it. It can also take years to create a title contender. Very very rarely will a newbee to an auction league have a chance at the title.

Need something new to keep the game from getting stale honestly it is a ton of fun, but the auction literally is a full day event. that is the only downside. but if you bring a few beers, a couple cigars, it turns into a really fun full day event (and drunkfest) although I recommend staying sober the first half of your first draft so you dont screw up your team. especially if its your first time doing an auction. FlyinHeadlock 459 Posted August 29, 2020 My favorite part of auctions are the bidding wars and just knowing you have a shot at any available player. There really is no way to play the game IMO. You want Barkley you can have him..but for a price.
AxeElf 787 Posted August 30, 2020 OH! And let's not forget the Most Important Thing about auction drafts... Mike Thomas (WR) is still in the league; he's with Cincinnati now. Throw his name out early, and see if you can get someone to bid $50 for him. You're welcome.

And that's funny - the poor slob who would do that would have to leave the league in shame the following year.
