Human ageing process biologically reversed in world first

The ageing process has been biologically reversed for the first time by giving humans oxygen therapy in a pressurised chamber.

Scientists in Israel showed they could turn back the clock in two key areas of the body believed to be responsible for the frailty and ill-health that comes with growing older.

As people age, the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes – called telomeres – shorten, causing DNA to become damaged and cells to stop replicating. At the same time, "zombie" senescent cells build up in the body, preventing regeneration.

Increasing telemere length and getting rid of senescent cells is the focus of many anti-ageing studies, and drugs are being developed to target those areas.

Now scientists at Tel Aviv University have shown that giving pure oxygen to older people while in a hyperbaric chamber increased the length of their telomeres by 20 per cent, a feat that has never been achieved before.

Scientists said the growth may mean that the telomeres of trial participants were now as long as they had been 25 years earlier.

The therapy also reduced senescent cells by up to 37 per cent, making way for new healthy cells to regrow. Animal studies have shown that removing senescent cells extends remaining life by more than one third.

The trial included 35 healthy independent adults aged 64 and older who did not undergo any lifestyle, diet or medication adjustments. Each patient was placed in a hyperbaric chamber for 90 minutes for five days a week over three months while breathing 100 per cent oxygen through a mask.

The pressurised chamber allows more oxygen to be dissolved into the tissues and mimics a state of "hypoxia", or oxygen shortage, which is known to have regenerating effects.

"However, what is remarkable to note in our study is that, in just three months of therapy, we were able to achieve such significant telomere elongation – at rates far beyond any of the current available interventions or lifestyle modifications.

Hyperbaric chambers. I ran these for CO poisoning and wound care. Hyper oxygenate the blood, good stuff.

This is actually the reverse.  The magic happens when you STOP taking 100% oxygen.  The body is tricked into thinking it is being starved for oxygen when you are just breathing normal air.  When the body thinks it is oxygen-starved, it actually goes into a regenerative state where it apparently sheds bad tissue and rebuilds telomeres.

Folks with untreated sleep apnea would live forever then. Not buying that for a second

I don't know if there has been any studies on that one.

Yeah this is what we focking need. More people living even focking longer.

You cannot stop progress.  It will happen.  And the universe is actually really REALLY big.  We can fit more people in it.

The number one problem on this planet, from which most of the others stem, is that there are two many mother focking people.

You wanna reverse aging and live a long time? Cool. Stop focking breeding.

And there is nowhere else in this universe habitable for human beings anytime in the distantly foreseeable future, so that doesn't fly. Maybe find that place and get it built up before we start with the longevity crap.

All this will mean is that the rich evil fockers will live focking forever anyway.

I do this in a sense everyday.  I dive to 70 feet (3atmospheres) and use 40% o2 in my tanks or 1.2atm O2.  That is equivalent to breathing 120% of the O2 molecules I would get at the surface breathing pure o2.  You have to be careful because breathing over 1.6 atm can cause you to blackout or cause convulsions.  That is not desirable when you are diving.

Without the 100% oxygen treatment in the chamber, the apnea crowd would just remain the apnea crowd. :dunno:

But what if this is the shiz we neednfor long range exploration?  A crew... sorta can live much longer making those trips to the goldilocks planets?

Some sort of cold sleep... coupled with this regeneration.

Like I said, this tech is coming and you cannot stop it.  At best, you might get the US and Europe to not develop it but China sure as hell will.  The ability to halt aging is gonna get developed in 30 years or less (probably a lot sooner).  The ability to reverse aging will get developed before 2100.  And if they make a few more breakthroughs like this, it all might happen before 2030.   There is no option to not develop this.

People living longer is a massive debt on society.  It's so massive, that it's causing people in this country to be delusional and thinking that socialism is the way to go.  I guess an argument can be made for that, since socialism always brings violence and war... thus, reducing population.

The article said the original article is in the journal Ageing.  I searched for it but couldn't find it though. :dunno:
