Anyone throw a game to face weaker team in playoff?

Recommended Posts

Here's the scenario. I have clinched the #1 playoff seed already so this week means nothing for me.

However, the team I am playing this week leads his division by 1 game and needs to win to take division and go to playoffs. The second place team in that division is already gong to win this week and has the tiebreaker over the leader. The tricky part is the winner of that division will be the #4 seed in the playoffs and be on my side of the bracket. The team that is in second is just now getting healthy and has a much stronger team going into playoff (Rogers, Devante Adams, Eckler, etc..). The first place team is limping in.

I would much rather face the first place team down the road in the playoffs. Would anyone deliberately throw the game to give the first place team the win? We both have two players going tonight. It's possible for me the swap in a lesser player or player on bye. This would screw the second place team and bump him from playoff altogether.

I know this would suck for the second place team but I'm thinking big picture for playoff run.

I've been in similar situations over the years, and I have always played to win.  Not b/c I'm some moral fantasy owner, but b/c I would jump off a bridge if it backfired and I ended up losing to the "weaker" opponent in the playoffs.

Must be one of those cheap online leagues, in my league, 14 team non ppr, if you  have a bye week player active during his bye week, you lose , all spots must be taken by a active player, as for putting in another player, what if that other player outperforms the player you placed him over?

And like the other poster said, no guarantee you’ll beat the first place team in the playoffs,, personally I play to win.

But don’t worry, this comes up every single season, so others will be coming a long soon agreeing with your decision to try to throw the game.

Be a man about it & put your best team out there no matter what. How would you like it if it were done to you? Decisions like this are the pretext to how you live your life.

I had a brief thought about doing just that yesterday. I had the #1 seed and bye pretty much locked up. I have the second most total points, but the team with the most (Henry, Chubb, DK, Watson) needs a win and a win by me to get in. I only thought about doing it for a minute or two. Ultimately, you don't want to anger the Fantasy Gods...

Yes, I successfully pulled that maneuver many years ago.

Was blown out in the Championship game by the "weaker" team.

I deserved it. Lesson learned.

Do it and the poet will get you...

Of course it is all luck anyway, so there is that...

Sharpen your teeth for the playoffs

go for the win every time

doubly true if you are in a league among friends

would you like being robbed of a playoff spot because someone layed down for a game?

if we see anyone doing that in my leagues immediate steel toed boot to buttocks

We have payouts to the team with the highest score each week so everyone plays to win.  Got to choke out the weasels in leagues.

We have bonus weekly payouts also, top three teams spilt , with first getting the majority of it, and then so on, 4th through 14 pay, double based on where you finished by total points. So if you finish 14th for the week, your out 28 dollars n

To echo most of the comments so far, play your best line-up. I'm all for strategic moves, but doing this to the other team seems really shady. You will also feel like an idiot when the "lesser" team sends you home in the first round!

There use to be a responds that was really common around here back in the day. I don't really remember it exactly, but it had something to do with punch, face, wife, and kids.  Anyone remember what it was?

I have been in a situation like that, where I had already clinched and winning didn't do me any good but my opponent had something to play for.

I won't say I try to lose the game, but I am a lot more likely to take risks with my starting line up.

I may do something like start a player I like over a player I don't like as much.

Or if I  have players on my bench who I haven't started much or at all during the season, I would likely get them a little playing time.

I won't go out of my way to try and lose though. It would probably be obvious to others in the league, and that wouldn't go over well.

If you don't play to win the game you are not invited back the following year.

It's bush league and bad karma, though I inadvertently threw my game this week by benching M.Jones - trotted Hilton out there on a hunch which worked out all right, but who knew that McLaurin was the one I should have benched?

Ha!  Yes I remember.  Something about how I will embarrass the guy when I knock on his front door, then punch him in the face right in front of his wife, kids, and dog.  I guess we all thought that was the most humiliating possible thing to happen to you.  Good times

I play the odds.  I don't just look at the other teams, I look at the upcoming schedules.  Just because one team is limping in to the playoffs, it doesn't mean that the players he has don't have favorable matchups.  It's all about luck anyway, so there's no guarantees.  For every person who says "You play to win every week", or something of that ilk, I'm willing to bet they've lost just as many times in the playoffs, if not more, than if they played the odds.

Now, that doesn't mean I'll start a backup QB or leave a player in the lineup who's out or on a bye, because I believe in fair play.  That said, I will put in players who are high risk/high reward, over players who are more likely to be reasonably productive, knowing that the likely outcome would be that I'll be on the losing side.

A few of the answers that ‘I’ll take more risks’ or it’s just luck seem to be just hedging on the issue to maintain plausible deniability.

Not true.  In my league, I've openly admitted to doing it and stated that I will do it.  No plausible deniability here.

The question has nothing to do with playing the odds for results.....it's about throwing a game......

Enough people weighed in on it... I just stated how I approach the situation.

I think your logic is sound & you are not likely to toss a game.....the OP must know its shady....thats why he posted....to get someone to ease his conscious or a post to sow others to justify his actions.
