Railroad strike averted and a Biden call helped seal the deal at the end. A leader leading....go figure:

President Joe Biden said Thursday that a tentative railway labor agreement has been reached, averting a strike that could have been devastating to the economy before the pivotal midterm elections.

Railroads and union representatives had been in negotiations for 20 hours at the Labor Department on Wednesday to hammer out a deal, as there was a risk of a strike starting on Friday that could have shut down rail lines across the country.

Biden made a key phone call to Labor Secretary Marty Walsh at 9 p.m. as the talks were ongoing after Italian dinner had been brought in, according to a White House official who spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity to discuss closed negotiations. The president told the negotiators to consider the harm to families, farmers and businesses if a shutdown occurred.

What resulted from the back and forth was a tentative agreement that will go to union members for a vote after a post-ratification cooling off period of several weeks.

“These rail workers will get better pay, improved working conditions, and peace of mind around their health care costs: all hard-earned,” Biden said. “The agreement is also a victory for railway companies who will be able to retain and recruit more workers for an industry that will continue to be part of the backbone of the American economy for decades to come.”

The strike would also have disrupted passenger traffic as well as freight rail lines, because Amtrak and many commuter railroads operate on tracks owned by the freight railroads. Amtrak had already canceled a number of its long-distance trains this week, and said the rest of its long-distance trains would stop Thursday ahead of the strike deadline.

Following the tentative agreement, Amtrak said it was “working to quickly restore canceled trains and reaching out to impacted customers to accommodate on first available departures.”

The five-year deal, retroactive to 2020, includes the 24% raises and $5,000 in bonuses that a Presidential Emergency Board recommended this summer. But railroads also agreed to ease their strict attendance policies to address some of the unions’ concerns about working conditions.

Yeah, sick time policy is a very complicated issue to solve. Thank god. I don’t know how anyone else manages to have one in place.

Trump gets countries in the Middle East to sign peace treaties that have been at each other’s throats for centuries. Biden solves the sick policy at a railroad he basically controls. I’m sure they’ll be a press conference.

im kinda surpried public schools are not requiring students to watch Biden's Philadelphia hate speech and forcing them to write essays on how great Dear Leader is.  15 years from now, if nothing changes, that will probably be a reality.  For that matter, since no elected officials are doing anything about woke culture, in 15 years, if nothing changes, Hollywood will probably require that all TV shows and movies include multiple scenes where they praise the current democrat leader and all schools will force students to watch and write essays on it,  Anyone that complains will be countered with the statement that Hollywood is a private business and is free to do anything they want and that they have no control over teachers to stop them forcing them to write educational essays.  if kids are forced to sing songs praising dear leader, what is your problem get a life!  but if anyone says something nice about trump, that is terrorism and you are going away for a long time.

So you agree he made the phone call to help seal the deal?

Was that so hard?

I agree he made a phone call.   And I think the description of what he said/did having any affect on the negotiations is laughably ridiculous.

Paint a picture of this for me:    Biden  calls his labor secretary (who was just as useless when he was the mayor of my city - Boston, before he became labor sec) and says;  "tell them to think about the children!!!!"    And then the negotiators go back to the table and say;  "wow, we didn't think of how this would impact the families and children - Let's get this done!!!"

Is that really what you are pitching here?    And then that it is a symbol of "great leadership"?

Also, Mooney - pro tip:    Any time you see any variation of the phrase bolded below - it means that what is being said is a lie or at best rampant spin.    Most people have figured this out by now.

Do you realize how easy you guys are to bait with the most simplistic of statements?

Biden made a phone call (well multiple ones over days according to reports but still) and the negotiators finished whatever I presume they already had figured on the table before that phone call. Sprinkle in the very minor dig at Trump and craftsman, HT, Baker Boy, and you come running to the defense of Trump. I care about Biden to about the same degree I care about Trump- which is very minimal. I do love firing up you guys over these things because you guys care so deeply about defending the honor of Trump for some reason.

Oooh, bringing two sides together over sick policy. Man that was some heavy lifting. As if the union was going on strike after securing a 24 pct pay raise over some sick policy . As a guy who has been in more than one union for many years, if I was told to go on strike after getting a raise like that over sick day policy I would tell my union to Fock right off, and so would everyone else. This was theatre. There was never going to be a strike over that. Mooney don’t know jack about negotiations. Idiots think going on strike is some big threat. It’s usually not. People have bills to pay.

Do you get off on making assumptions about me? Like seriously you seem to use that in the same manner one uses stepmom porn or something.

I know plenty about negotiations. I've sat in on negotiations multiple times across multiple contracts both in and out of teaching. But I do appreciate that you got to wrap all your greatest hits- "mooney knows nothing" "here's a stupid red herring argument against something no one said" "HT is the toughest guy around" "I'd tell my union...." Come up for air next time.

Biden mad a phone call. Lol. There was never going to be a strike over sick policy. Anyone thinking there was is Fockin clueless and should pipe down. “Yeah, we negotiated the rest of this this deal and we are happy with it,  but if you don’t change the sick policy we’re walking”. I just want the rest of you who have never negotiated a union contract to know how Fockin laughable this is to someone who has.

Show your evidence that he didn't make a phone call.

Then why are you acting like Biden did something here if you know better? If you have a clue, you know damn well no one was going on strike over Fockin sick policy after kicking ass on the rest of the contract.  Not sick days, sick policy. Just admit they put on a show. If you think they didn’t and Biden saved the day then I’ll continue to mock the Fock out of you. Your choice.

Same thing I said to Masshole with some bolding for emphasis:

I have zero idea of what the people were thinking strike wise- neither do you. I wouldn't assume they were going to go on strike any more than I would assume they were like "Well hell the President called, let's get this solved now."

But to be clear- Biden did do something, I exaggerated the effect of it knowing people like you would have to play Justice League for Trump

Manufactured railroad "crisis". The left decided they needed a "win" in the public eye. This was all set up from the beginning.

It's kind of like those reality shows such as Love it or List it, Property Brothers, Pawn Stars, etc. Everything is worked out in advance before it goes to the public for consumption of the story.

Remember when trump made a phone call about Biden being in the Ukraine pockets (as proven by the amount of money we give them today once again) and got impeached for it

I love the centrists here they are so level headed

It’s not bout the corruption. It’s about taking the focus off of wages, benefits and working conditions and making it about complete bullshit. Climate change demands from a teachers union? Woke nonsense? I don’t pay my dues for that. Wages , benefits and working conditions. That’s your job.

The top gets rewarded.  The middle class has taken it on the chin ever since academics and lawyers took over organized labor.

It was pretty a exciting moment for Gretchen Halfwit whose reward for using her best shampoo was getting to hold the Pervert-in-Chief's hand at the Detroit auto show. Hopefully, backstage he let her lick the drool off his suit jacket and change his Depends too.
